San Diego Chargers V Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday
The AFC divisional playoffs conclude this Sunday at Heinz Field.
Yes, the NFL will conclude the 2009 AFC divisional playoffs at Heinz Field where the San Diego Chargers visit the Pittsburgh Steelers, hoping that they’d be able to keep the momentum they generated a few weeks ago and keep those ‘’terrible towels'’ in Pittsburgh down.
The last time these two teams met, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the San Diego Chargers 11-10 at Heinz Field on Nov.16, despite not scoring a touchdown after making three trips inside San Diego’s 20-yard line.
Since then, the San Diego Chargers have
been awesome, providing probably the biggest upset of the 2009 NFL playoffs in knocking off league MVP Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, a week after earning that wild card spot when they dominated the Denver Broncos at home.
Darren Sproles has emerged as the next young playmaker in San Diego’s backfield. Chances are, we haven’t seen the last of him either because word is that LaDainian Tomlinson could be out for the rest of the playoffs with a groin injury.
Defensively for the San Diego Chargers, coordinator Ron Rivera has had massive impact since taking over for Ted Cottrell midseason. As a result, San Diego is playing with more confidence these few weeks than earlier in the year.
The biggest turnaround for the Chargers defensively has been in the secondary, which has been shredded earlier in the season but has since come together to make this playoff run they’ve been having possible. The true test for the Chargers this week is keeping Ben Roethlisberger (who will play despite suffering a concussion two weeks ago) from making plays on third down.
Teams have been trying to get to Big Ben, but he’s often burned them by escaping the pressure while keeping his eyes down field to make plays. Pittsburgh’s offensive line seems like it’s being held together by duct tape, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Ravens defense can drum up a pass rush with their front seven and possibly force Roethlisberger to make mistakes like he did in the Steelers’ loss to the Titans a few weeks ago.
Offensively for San Diego, if Sproles can’t find running room against the best defense in the league, they would have to rely on quarterback Philip Rivers and the improving passing game these guys were able to establish this season.
This game also has some added intrigue because when these two teams met earlier this season, the Steelers came away with an 11-10 victory, which was the first 11-10 final in NFL history. Of course the final score should have been 18-10 because Troy Polamalu scored a defensive touchdown in the waning seconds of the game, but the officials blew a forward-lateral call and the score came off the board, resulting in the 11-10 finish.
It was one of the most bizarre plays of the season, which incidentally cost gamblers millions of dollars.
