Week 4 Picks for the 2009 College Football Season
For those of you still whining about USC’s loss to Washington, get over it because this could be the week that’ll get your money back.
Well, we’re not promising you anything but since Week 4 of the 2009 NCAA college football season will definitely give all of us who lost a lot of dough on that USC game a fresh start, it doesn’t hurt to hope for the best.
And hope for the best we will indeed as Week 4 on the college gridiron should give you some interesting games for you to enjoy and hopefully, win some cash out of it too. For starters, we have the Mississippi Rebels, ranked No.4 in the Associated Press poll, getting their first big test of the season Thursday night when they face the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia. The Rebels are coming off a rather easy 52-6 win over Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday.
However, while that one was a breeze for Mississippi, the same couldn’t be said this week since they only have four days to prepare for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Fortunately, the Rebels are healthy again after an outbreak of flu last week that affected almost a third of the roster. Let’s see if they still have something left in the tank this Thursday.
Next, we have the Virginia Tech Hokies hosting the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday as the Hokies will ride on their momentum as they gun for their third win in four outings. The last time the Hokies were on the field, the Nebraska Cornhuskers limited them to two first downs and 55 yards for the first 28 minutes of the second half before bouncing right back up with two plays, Tyrod Taylor’s 81-yard pass to Danny Coale that put it at the Nebraska 3, then Taylor’s 11-yard strike to Dyrell Roberts with 21 seconds left for the win over the stunned Cornhuskers.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Hokies will play the Miami Hurricanes. One thing’s for sure though, they can’t afford another slow start against the U.
One team looking for a win this week is the Utah Utes as they look to bounce back after their 16-game winning streak came to an end Saturday against Oregon. They will now face the Louisville Cardinals, who also lost an in-state rivalry game to Kentucky. The Utes (2-1) struggled offensively, netting only 297 yards. Running back Matt Asiata, who injured his shoulder a week earlier and missed practice, started the game on the bench but ended up with 54 yards on a season-low 15 carries. LaMichael James rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown, and Oregon (2-1) finished with 217 yards running. The Utes are giving up 153.3 rushing yards per game in through three games.
Meanwhile, Victor Anderson had another big game in the backfield, rushing for 110 yards on 19 carries for the Louisville Cardinals. The Cards defense did its job most of the day, forcing three big turnovers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as they still lost to Kentucky, 31-27.
Last but certainly not the least is another USC game (how about that…) as the Washington State Cougars visit the USC Trojans. And for those of you hoping that the Trojans will once again lose to an unranked team for the second straight game, you have another thing coming.
Coming from an overtime win 30-27 against Southern Methodist, the Washington State Cougars visit the Trojans looking for the same upset their state rivals came up with. Unfortunately for them, these Trojans will probably be a little agitated come Saturday. Yep, this is the wrong time to visit Southern Cal.
However, if USC wants to avoid another upset loss to the state of Washington, they need to fix their turnovers and work on their third down conversions. And knowing Pete Carroll, I have a feeling they already have.
