Should Rampage Jackson get his UFC title shot?

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

How about that, Rampage finally won in the Octagon again.

That’s right, Quinton Rampage Jackson won at UFC 123 and a light heavyweight title shot could be in the near future for him after earning the split decision over Lyoto Machida.

Unfortunately for fans who love to see the light heavyweight title back on the waist of Quinton Rampage Jackson, all the guy could think about following his thrilling win at UFC 123 was a rematch against the man he just beat.

In case you missed it, the main event of UFC 123 was a battle of former UFC light heavyweight champions. Jackson won a razor-thin split decision over Lyoto Machida in front of a raucous crowd at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. The win moves Jackson to the top of the list of title contenders in the division, all of whom are awaiting the outcome of the Mauricio Shogun Rua – Rashad Evans title fight scheduled for early 2011.

Before looking ahead at the opportunity to regain the UFC title, however, Jackson was giving full respect to Lyoto Machida. ”Machida whooped my ass tonight,” said a laughing Jackson (30-8), who survived a third-round onslaught in the win.

All three judges scored the match 29-28, with two giving the decision to Jackson.

The first two rounds were incredibly difficult to judge. Both fighters landed good shots during what was largely 10 minutes of stand-up fighting. Tipping the scales in Jackson’s favour though was the fact that the shots he landed appeared to have more sting and he was the one moving forward most of the time, thus controlling the action.

The third round was decisively controlled by Machida, who took Jackson down and…

Fisher and Young continue to rip the Titans apart

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgAnd according to team owner Bud Adams, these two better kiss and makeup soon.

That’s right, Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams said that his head coach, Jeff Fisher, and QB, Vince Young, will have to put aside their differences for the sake of the team this 2010 NFL football season.

Adams, in comments to the Tennessean, surprisingly defended Vince Young and said he expects the QB to play again for the Tennessee Titans.

That’s despite the fact that coach Jeff Fisher said he had stripped Vince Young of the starting role after the two had an altercation inside the team’s locker room following a loss to the Washington Redskins.

“They are going to have to work together. I haven’t given up on Vince, and I am sure Fisher hasn’t either,” Adams said told the Tennessean. “Vince was upset and said some things he regretted after doing it, but you have to get to the bottom of it, straighten it out and move on.” Young said that he was wrong in how he acted, storming out of the locker room after Jeff Fisher addressed the team. Teammates said Young and Fisher had words.

Young hurt his thumb during the game, and said he was upset with Fisher’s decision not to play him again. Fisher said he was disappointed with how Young behaved, which included throwing his shoulder pads into the crowd.

Colts and Chargers meet on Monday Night Football

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Now this is the way to culminate Thanksgiving week.

Another prime-time matchup promises to be entertaining as Week 12 of the 2010 NFL football season culminates with the NFL’s top two passers going at it in an important game that could very well decide who will rule the AFC.

On one side, we have Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, on the other we have Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers. While the Colts have won all four home games this season, they return to Lucas Oil Stadium after a disappointing 31-28 loss at New England to face the again-resurgent Chargers, who after another slow start are on a three-game win streak.

Yes, this is the perfect time for the San Diego Chargers to humiliate the Colts on their own turf. Philip Rivers can match Peyton Manning when it comes to driving an offense through the air, so it seems a certainty this will be a shootout. The game within the game could be turnovers because while San Diego is approaching prolific levels with Rivers slinging it around, the Chargers have 22 giveaways.

The Colts typically take care of the football with just 13 giveaways, but the highlights all week have been of Manning throwing three INTs to the Patriots, including the last one while in field-goal range for a potentially game-tying score in the final minute. It’s difficult that Manning has to shoulder more of the offensive burden this season, there hasn’t been enough balance with RBs Joseph Addai and Mike Hart sidelined by injuries. But this is why the four-time NFL MVP is one of the game’s greats. He takes his shots and typically leads this team through the tough times.

Peyton Manning lives for these challenges…

Cardinals host the 49ers on Sunday Night Football

Friday, November 26th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgJust when you thought you had enough football this Thanksgiving.

On Sunday night, the Arizona Cardinals will host the San Francisco 49ers for an NFC West battle at the University of Phoenix Stadium for Week 12 of the 2010 NFL football season.

The San Francisco 49ers head into Sunday Night Football with a 3-7 record. They are ranked third in the NFC West division, one win behind second place 4-6 Rams and two wins behind first place 5-5 Seahawks.

The Arizona Cardinals, on the other hand, are in fourth place in the same NFC West division, tied with the Niners at 3-7, so if anything, this game will break a tie that probably won’t matter to most football fans.

Last week, the 49ers lost to the Bucs, ending their two game winning streak while the Cardinals lost their fifth straight game to the Chiefs. 49ers coach Mike Singletary named Troy Smith the starter against the Cardinals, who surely have taken notes on what the Buccaneers defense did to stop him last Sunday.

Against St. Louis a week before losing to the Bucs, Smith bludgeoned the Rams defense with deep, downfield passes, and that aggressive style seemed to breathe life into the 49ers’ heretofore sleepy offense.

To counter that, the Buccaneers often sent an additional pass rusher, sometimes two, to the right of San Francisco’s offensive line, where Smith has made a habit of rolling out. Against the Rams, those rollouts bought Smith an extra second or two and allowed him to use his strong right arm to make plays downfield.

That wasn’t the case against the Bucs…

Patriots, Saints, Jets and Bengals this Thanksgiving

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

This Thanksgiving, you’re in for a special treat.

That’s right, it’s Thanksgiving in the 2010 NFL football season and this year, the NFL is featuring three fantastic football games for you to watch while you chomp on that turkey.

First, we have the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The Lions are still a rebuilding young team, whereas the Patriots come in a well-oiled machine rolling through the league with a dynamic offense led by veteran quarterback Tom Brady.

Of course, the Pats offense will still rely on Tom Brady and Wes Welker, who’s immediate bounce back from an MCL and ACL tear has been amazing. They also have two young TE’s in Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski who have looked good so far this season.

The Detroit Lions franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford is still out with a shoulder injury, so expect Shaun Hill to get the Thanksgiving start. As if that matters right? You see, the last time the Lions played the Patriots on Thanksgiving was in 2002, a game that saw only one offensive touchdown (a rushing TD by Antowain Smith). The Patriots won 20-12, the Lions quarterback for that game was Joey Harrington who threw three interceptions.

In the second game, the New Orleans Saints go up against the struggling Dallas Cowboys. At the beginning of the year, this game could have looked like…

Alonso still loves Ferrari despite costing him the title

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYeah, I said it. Ferrari cost him the title in Abu Dhabi.

Fernando Alonso is still refusing to place blame after losing the World title in Abu Dhabi in the recently concluded 2010 F1 season, insisting he’s more in love with Ferrari than ever before.

Although Fernando Alonso, with his eight-point advantage, was the favorite to win the World title as the season came to its conclusion in Abu Dhabi, a botched pit stop strategy saw him fall down the order where he was stuck behind traffic.

As a result of not being able to find a way past Renault’s Vitaly Petrov, the double World Champion could only manage seventh place while Sebastian Vettel went on to win the grand prix and the Drivers’ Championship title.

“It hurts to come so close to the goal and see it slip away like that, but that’s the way sport goes and we have to accept it,” Alonso told Ferrari’s website. “The closing chapter of the season must not erase all the positive things that we’ve done this year. And – I repeat – for me it’s been a top year.”

“There have been wonderful moments, such as the Monza podium, that will stay in my memory and the bitter end will never be able to cancel them out.”

The Ferrari driver, though, is refusing to blame that one decision for him losing the World title, saying it takes an entire season to either win or lose a Championship.

“It’s pointless to try and work out who got things wrong…”

SBG Global’s Annual $1,000,000 Turkey Bowl Contest

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Yep, because they want to milk on the spirit of Thanksgiving while giving you more dough to burn this Holiday season.

SBG Global, one of the biggest sportsbooks out there online, is holding its Annual $1,000,000 Turkey Bowl Contest. That means sports bettors out there (like you and me of course) will have the chance to win a total of $1 million just by simply visiting SBGGlobal.com and logging on for the promo.

A whopping $350,000 will be given away for the grand winner, followed by $200,000 for second prize, $100,000 for third, $50,000 for fourth and $12,000 as consolation. They’re giving away so much cash that they’re letting you get back on your feet if you’ve been betting on the Alabama Crimson Tide, Miami Heat, Antonio Margarito or Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL the last few days.

Speaking of the 2010 NFL football season, we have seen quite the story as far as the league’s new flag carrier is concerned. Well, they haven’t OFFICALLY baptized him the moniker yet but they should, that’s if he can keep playing at the level he played last Monday night.

I’m talking about none other than Michael Vick, Philly’s only hope to…

Is it time for the Vikings to retire Brett Favre?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

As much as I hate to admit it, Favre no longer has what it takes to play in the NFL.

There I said it, and even the Minnesota Vikings know it. Team owner Zygi Wilf made the first important step toward repairing his damaged franchise this 2010 NFL football season by firing coach Brad Childress.

Now, does the absentee Wilf have the guts to pull the cord on legendary quarterback Brett Favre? Wilf would certainly be doing the league a big favor by cutting Favre, ending the need for Goodell to impose any discipline on the quarterback and concluding the league’s investigation of the whole Jenn Sterger/Favre sex-texting episode.

On a side note, two NFL sources said in the past two days that NFL director of security Milt Ahlerich is expected to be done with his investigation within a week, handing the white-hot baton to Goodell for what could be one of the most difficult decisions he has faced in what is becoming the Era of Personal Conduct.

Wilf would be wise to save his Minnesota Vikings and the league the embarrassment of dealing with the Favre situation by simply telling him, “Hey, it’s been fun, but not that much fun.” In the span of less than 11 months, the Vikings have gone from the brink of making the Super Bowl to being the NFL’s most compelling soap opera of 2010. Heck, even Cowboys owner Jerry Jones probably looks at the Vikings these days and says, “Man, we got nothin’ on them.”

Chilly hates Favre. Favre hates Chilly. Team pulls off a stunning trade for…

Blazers can live without Oden, but not without Roy

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYes, I really believe the Blazers figured that they don’t really need Oden that much.

The Portland Trail Blazers have been playing without center Greg Oden for three years now, pushing past 50 victories and reaching relevance again. They stopped counting on him. The regime responsible for drafting Oden over Kevin Durant has been pushed out, and a fresh front office bears no burden for a broken No. 1 pick this 2010 NBA basketball season.

Another microfracture surgery for Greg Oden, as the team announced, is just another step closer to the Blazers letting him leave this summer. As much as the training staff likes Oden, it will have to take into account the mental toll that four years of flailing has taken on him.

The issues which have surrounded him – his drinking, his deep emotional lows – play into the uncertainty around his future as much as the two microfracture surgeries on his knees.

The Portland Trail Blazers could survive without Oden, but their true star – Brandon Roy – has the knees which truly frighten the franchise. The guard will try to play the next few games with soreness in his left knee – a knee that has grown worse and worse.

There’s damage and deterioration, and two league sources with direct knowledge of the medical prognosis on Brandon Roy say his days as an NBA All-Star, a franchise player, are probably over.

There’s no real hope of it improving,” one league source with direct…

BetUS.com likes Lyoto Machida over Rampage Jackson

Friday, November 19th, 2010

That’s right, and for your sake, let’s hope they got it right.

In case you didn’t know, Lyoto ”The Dragon” Machida will go up against Quinton Rampage Jackson in UFC 123 for a face-off that both fighters are hoping to win and land back in the title chase for the UFC light heavyweight title.

At 30-8, Lyoto Machida is a -260 favorite at BetUS.com for a reason. He hasn’t been lolly gagging around Hollywood for the past year.

He’s been in the ring training and defending his light heavyweight title which he only recently lost in May to Mauricio Rua. You know he wants it back and deserves another title shot.

BetUS.com thinks he’ll get one after he destroys Quinton Rampage Jackson and his Octagon career in this fight. Quinton made a pretty B.A. Baracus in The A-Team Movie.

He used to be a better fighter than actor, but he now seems a little less committed than these other guys to put it nicely. He’s already made it huge as a fighter and now wants the celebrity life.

Does he deserve another chance in the ring? Absolutely, but if he comes out soft, BetUS.com sees Machida tearing him apart in every aspect.

For the co-main event of this Saturday’s event, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes will fight for the third and possibly final time and just like their two other face-offs, Penn is the odds on favorite. He’s had 2 losses in the last 3 fights so, Penn knows how important this fight is with Matt Hughes.

Matt Hughes won the second fight against BJ Penn and figures…
