Broncos take on the Chargers on Monday Night Football

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

I’m hoping to see Tim Tebow break loose, that’s if they bench Orton.

And while this game isn’t as intriguing as all the other matchups we had to culminate another week in the 2010 NFL football season, we’re hoping it would be, specially if we happen to see Tim Tebow get on the field. Haha!

Whatever the case is, the San Diego Chargers WILL put their two-game winning streak on the line against the Broncos. The Chargers have won back to back games against Tennessee and Houston with 33 – 25 and 29 -23 wins, respectively.

But the Chargers wanted to get healthy heading to their game against the Denver Broncos. And for the most part they did after limping to their bye with a 4-5 mark. Coach Norv Turner was clear this bye would be more about recuperating than switching schemes and changing philosophy. So it was curious to see who was among the Chargers will not suit up Monday, the first day back.

HINT: They won’t have their Pro Bowl tight end and star running back.

Antonio Gates, who is having a sensational year with nine touchdowns, remains out with toe and foot issues. Ryan Mathews looks even more questionable, he is still being slowed down by his ankle injury he suffered in Week 2.

But for the most part, the rest of the posse is back and…

Eagles vs Giants on Sunday Night Football

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s a classic NFC East rivalry game this Sunday on Sunday Night Football.

You read it, a crucial NFC East matchup between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles takes place Sunday night in Week 11 of the 2010 NFL football season.

The loss the New York Giants suffered to the Dallas Cowboys last weekend has opened the door for the Philadelphia Eagles to move into a first-place tie with a huge win against the Washington Redskins Monday night.

In the loss against the Cowboys, Dallas routinely completed big plays in the air against the New York Giants defense. New York allowed four plays of 40-plus yards in the pass game and six plays of 25-plus yards. That’s a good sign for the Eagles’ offense, which is one of the best in the league when it comes to hitting big plays downfield.

Despite the loss to Dallas, the Giants are still in first place in the NFC East – for now. They had won five in a row before losing to Dallas and are still tied with four others for the second-best record in the conference behind the Falcons. Of the Giants’ six wins, two have come against opponents that currently have a .500 record or better – the Week 4 victory against the Bears and their win at Seattle. The combined record of the teams the Giants have beaten is 20-34 (.370).

New York is 1-1 in the division, having faced the Cowboys twice. Four of the Giants’ final seven games are against the Eagles and the Redskins.

The teams remaining on the Giants’ schedule are a combined…

Rampage Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida headlines UFC 123

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

It’s like Karate Kid going up against a giant monster in the movies.

That’s right, Quinton Rampage Jackson squares off against Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida this weekend at the Palace of Auburn Hills in UFC 123 for a much anticipated light heavyweight bout.

Coming in fresh off the decision loss to Rashad Evans, Quinton Rampage Jackson looks to regain relevance in the UFC’s light heavyweight division this weekend. Meanwhile, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida lost his title via 1st round knockout to current champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and will attempt to regain his aura of invincibility with a decisive victory.

While preparing for the fight, a lot of questions have surrounded Lyoto ”The Dragon” Machida. Machida suffered the first loss of his career via knockout. Despite the setback, Machida has been perfecting his overall game with Team Blackhouse while sharpening his wrestling skills with American Kickboxing Academy. You know he wants the light heavyweight title back.

Machida knows how big a fight this Saturday with Rampage Jackson is. Despite that, he says he feels no pressure to perform better in his upcoming fight. The pressure is there naturally. “The reality is that there is pressure every time you step into a fight. There is always pressure going into a fight,” Machida said during a conference call.

Jackson will be as much of a challenge as Shogun Rua was to…

Matt Hughes – BJ Penn Trilogy concludes in UFC 123

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYou read it, Matt Hughes will go up against BJ Penn for the third and probably final time this Saturday.

A light-heavyweight bout between former champs Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto Machida headlines UFC 123 but you just know the third face-off between Hughes and Penn is the fight everybody wants to see.

This is a fight where one fighter has everything to gain while the other has everything to lose. Matt Hughes has nothing to lose with this fight. After going 1-3, Hughes has resurrected his career and ripped off three straight wins. His last win over Ricardo Almeida was undoubtedly his most impressive. Hughes’ comeback has been remarkable after most MMA fans called for him to retire.

A win over BJ Penn would likely earn him a UFC welterweight title rematch with Georges St. Pierre or Josh Koshcheck in what has the potential to be the ultimate ending to Hughes’ tremendous comeback story.

A loss won’t really hurt Matt Hughes too much either. Nobody has expected him to be a title contender in the division. At 36 the clock is ticking and Hughes hasn’t exactly rolled off three wins against three quality opponents. A loss would take any potential title match off the table, yet at the same time Hughes is playing with virtual house money anyway.

You can’t say the same to BJ Penn though. After losing two straight to Frankie Edgar, getting dominated in their last match, Penn would need at least three wins from a potential title rematch with Frankie Edgar. For Penn, this is arguably the biggest fight in his career and it is an all-or nothing situation for the former UFC world champion. Moving up in weight and losing to Matt Hughes would set Penn back further than anyone would have expected coming into 2010. Going 0-3 and losing to a guy that most fans feel he should beat would have huge ramifications for Penn’s future in the UFC.

The decision to move down is not one without risk

Bodog has the Lakers winning second NBA Threepeat

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

After all that hoopla about the Heat dominating the season, looks like it’ll be every team’s title to win.

The 2010 NBA basketball season is finally upon us and with it comes one of the most intriguing story lines in recent basketball history. And no, it’s not what you think, it has nothing to do with the Miami Heat.

We’ve already seen the juggernaut Miami Heat fall in their season opener to the Boston Celtics, then again a few days ago. And we’ve seen the back-to-back champion Los Angeles Lakers kick off their season with a win. Perhaps it’s the latter we should be focusing on.

Though early performance is hardly any indication of future success, the fact that the Los Angeles Lakers won on opening day and the Heat fell miserably on the road in Boston is telling. It’s just so easy to get caught up in the hoopla of the “New Big Three”.

In some NBA betting circles, teams not based in South Beach aren’t even realistically considered when it comes to the 2011 NBA championship, it’s a shame really. What critics who tout Miami as inevitable champions seem to be forgetting, though, is that Kobe Bryant and the Lakers are going for a second threepeat.

You know who else had two threepeats in their career? Michael Jordan. You know who has molded his entire career off Michael Jordan in such an exact way that it’s almost creepy? Kobe Bryant. Seems to me like a pretty good bet.

Think about it. The Lakers have 5/2 odds of winning the…

After going 30-30, will Minnesota show Kevin more Love?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgThe Wolves definitely has a whole lot of LOVE for him now.

When Kevin Love makes a prediction, he’s not going to be talking about points or assists or (as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves) wins. In case you didn’t know, Love went for 31 points and 30 rebounds, posting the first 30-30 game of the 2010 NBA basketball season and the first one in 28 years.

And Kevin Love did it in their 112-103 win over the New York Knicks. And at one point in the third quarter of that game, Kevin Love leaned over to Michael Beasley on the bench and whispered in his ear. “I’m going for 30 tonight,” Love said. With Love having only seven points at the time, Beasley looked at him and said, “Thirty what?”

“Thirty what?” Seriously? It’s Kevin Love. Geez.

Love got his 30 rebounds for the Minnesota Timberwolves in their win over New York. Thirty-one of those caroms, actually, along with 31 points, and it’s just a remarkable achievement even considering the fact that New York was playing a converted power forward (Amar’e Stoudemire) at center along with two small forwards up front. Thirty-one, my friends, is 31, and it’s the first time in 28 years this has even happened in the NBA.

And even though we saw Love grab a few boards away from teammates (not too rudely, but we have noticed this aspect a couple of times a game in each of Minnesota’s games), 31 is 31. With…

Sebastian Vettel had no idea he was winning the F1 Title

Monday, November 15th, 2010

Yep, it’s his way of gloating, pretending he wasn’t even going after the championship back in Abu Dhabi.

Sebastian Vettel has revealed that he had no idea that he was on track to win the World title as he cruised to victory in the 2010 F1 season finale in Abu Dhabi. Heading into the final race 15 points behind Fernando Alonso, Vettel needed to win the race and have the Spaniard finish outside the top five.

The cocky Sebastian Vettel did his part in emphatic style, leading off the line to keep Lewis Hamilton at bay. And from there it was just a case of managing his race and his car as he headed towards victory lane.

However, the entire time Vettel did not know he was also heading towards his maiden Formula One World title after the Red Bull pit wall decided not to inform him of the goings on of those around him. Well, that’s what he claims anyway.

“I’m a bit speechless to be honest. It has been an incredible tough season for myself for all of use, physically and mentally,” said the 23-year-old, F1′s youngest-ever Champion. “To come here, we were always believing in us in the car and I kept believing in myself.”

“I tried to avoid contact, just drive and do my own thing and try to win this race and do my best. We’ve lifted this Championship were it matters. The car was phenomenal. In the first stint I had a little of graining and Lewis got close but then it stabilized and it was dream. It was great that Lewis got out behind Kubica and I could make a gap.”

“To be honest I didn’t know anything. My race engineer every lap was…”

Miami Heat in panic after losing to the Celtics again

Monday, November 15th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgBecause if both teams happen to meet in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics have their number.

It certainly looks like Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is finding out that his boys are soft, staggered and fragile to the touch at this point of the 2010 NBA basketball season. But for some reason, to him, all the struggles they’ve been having is OK. For him, they need all the shit they’ve been having on the court.

In the last 48 hours, we’re getting to know each other,” Spoelstra said. “This is good. You need to face this adversity. You need to stumble.”

The problem is, the Miami Heat has been stumbling a lot lately. Yes, they’re getting to know each other. With two horrific losses within three days at American Airlines Arena, the Heat are mortified to find themselves fighting to stay above .500, and Spoelstra is getting to know his superstar, LeBron James. Chris Bosh came and went, Dwyane Wade stood in the corners and watched.

Most of all, LeBron James found himself in postseason shape, closing a loss to the Boston Celtics with a missed layup, two missed free throws and a corner 3-pointer off the side of the backboard.

The world’s bearing down, times are tumultuous, and James is the one Heat star in playoff form. “For myself, 44 minutes is too much,” LeBron James declared. “I think Coach Spo knows that. Forty minutes for D-Wade is too much. We have to have as much energy as we can to finish games out.”

There you go, Coach Spo. Get to know him well.

Two days earlier, James had done nothing in overtime and ultimately decided the difference was a Hall of Fame coach, Jerry Sloan, who knew exactly what the Heat were going to do. James never takes responsibility, never says, “I’m the MVP and I need to do more.” He didn’t do it in Cleveland, and he’s never going to…

Vick leads Eagles against the Redskins on Monday Night

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Okay, this time, I’m really hoping to see a proper Vick – McNabb face-off.

The Philadelphia Eagles are facing the Washington Redskins to culminate Week 9 of the 2010 NFL football season.

The Philadelphia Eagles have done well in their last game against the Indianapolis Colts, beating Peyton Manning and his crew 26-24. With a 5–3 record, the Eagles look to sustain their momentum even without key players who suffered various injuries in their last game.

Rookie safety Nate Allen is out for the Washington Redskins game with a neck sprain, Allen got hurt early in the second quarter of the Eagles’ win over the Colts at the Linc and was replaced by rookie seventh-round pick Kurt Coleman. Allen, the Eagles’ second-round pick out of South Florida, has started all eight games this year and has three interceptions, second-most among all NFL rookies this year.

Coach Andy Reid said he and general manager Howie Roseman had discussions about signing veteran cornerback Al Harris, released Monday by the Packers. Harris spent the 1998 through 2002 seasons with the Eagles, starting 21 games and recording seven interceptions. He became a star in Green Bay, picking up 14 interceptions and three touchdowns in seven years as a starter and making the Pro Bowl after the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

If Allen is out for Sunday, the Eagles won’t have any spare safeties on the roster, so they’ll probably sign somebody as a stopgap. As of this writing, there are no safeties on the practice squad. One option would be rookie Keenan Clayton. Clayton, who is 6-1, 229, and played both linebacker and safety at Oklahoma.

Of course, they do still have Michael Vick so I won’t worry about…

Patriots visit the Steelers on Sunday Night Football

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s a battle for AFC supremacy this Sunday night.

The New England Patriots will meet the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10 of the 2010 NFL football season at Heinz Field on Sunday Night.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have performed well and defeated the Cincinnati Bengals last night with 27-21 at Paul Brown Stadium, bouncing back from their loss to the New Orleans Saints. With a 6-2 record this season, the Steelers have persevered so far and they would love to maintain their form for the rest of the season.

Problem is, the Steelers have not had much success against the New England Patriots for more than a decade. The Patriots have won six of their past eight against the Steelers, starting in 1998, including three of their past four in Pittsburgh, where New England won AFC title games after the 2001 and 2004 seasons on their way to Super Bowl championships.

The Steelers are coming off three consecutive games on the road for the first time in the regular season since 1994, and one thing they’ve been unable to do both recently this season and traditionally against the Patriots is run the ball.

Without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers got off to a fast start in their running game, something team president Art Rooney proclaimed must improve in 2010. They averaged 150 yards per game through their first three, all victories. They then averaged only 92.8 yards per game in their next four, which they split.

Pittsburgh’s running game has been slightly improved since last season, when it ranked 19th in the NFL with an average of just 112.1 yards per game. The Steelers have run it more often this year with coordinator Bruce Arians using a fullback more.

Rashard Mendenhall is on the way to his best season and…
