Cardinals host the 49ers on Sunday Night Football
Just when you thought you had enough football this Thanksgiving.
On Sunday night, the Arizona Cardinals will host the San Francisco 49ers for an NFC West battle at the University of Phoenix Stadium for Week 12 of the 2010 NFL football season.
The San Francisco 49ers head into Sunday Night Football with a 3-7 record. They are ranked third in the NFC West division, one win behind second place 4-6 Rams and two wins behind first place 5-5 Seahawks.
The Arizona Cardinals, on the other hand, are in fourth place in the same NFC West division, tied with the Niners at 3-7, so if anything, this game will break a tie that probably won’t matter to most football fans.
Last week, the 49ers lost to the Bucs, ending their two game winning streak while the Cardinals lost their fifth straight game to the Chiefs. 49ers coach Mike Singletary named Troy Smith the starter against the Cardinals, who surely have taken notes on what the Buccaneers defense did to stop him last Sunday.
Against St. Louis a week before losing to the Bucs, Smith bludgeoned the Rams defense with deep, downfield passes, and that aggressive style seemed to breathe life into the 49ers’ heretofore sleepy offense.
To counter that, the Buccaneers often sent an additional pass rusher, sometimes two, to the right of San Francisco’s offensive line, where Smith has made a habit of rolling out. Against the Rams, those rollouts bought Smith an extra second or two and allowed him to use his strong right arm to make plays downfield.
That wasn’t the case against the Bucs.
Against Tampa Bay, Smith usually found a defender waiting for him on the edge that forced him to remain in the pocket, and he was not as good at spotting receivers from that vantage point. Smith was asked if the Buccaneers, in keeping him inside the pocket, created a template for other teams to stop him.
“I could possibly see that,” he said. “But that’s football. We as quarterbacks make our living in tight quarters.”
RG Chilo Rachal will retain his starting spot despite several breakdowns Sunday, coach Mike Singletary said.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals have not had a losing season under coach Ken Whisenhunt. Until this season, their record improved each year: from 8-8, to 9-7 to 10-6. Before he arrived in 2007, the Cardinals had a winning record just once since moving to Arizona in 1988.
Many things will be on the agenda once the season is over. But at 3-7, the Cardinals remain in playoff contention, because they are arguably in the worst division in football, the NFC West.
