Chad Ochocinco signs with the New England Patriots

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Heeere we go Pats fans, I have a feeling this team will do more than a perfect regular season campaign this time.

The New England Patriots spent the first two days of free agency in near silence, watching and waiting as opponents threw fistfuls of dollars at countless players for the 2011 NFL football season.

Fans no doubt clamored for signs of life underneath Bill Belichick’s hoodie. He came alive yesterday. In a training camp opening day no one will forget, the Patriots coach once again turned all eyes on his team by trading for former Pro Bowl players Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco.

Suddenly, thanks to the addition of the former Redskins defensive tackle and the ex-Bengals wide receiver, the New England Patriots received a jolt of energy and expertise deemed necessary by Belichick even after a 14-2 season. And the world noticed, with the Pats dominating the headlines, beginning when the Haynesworth deal broke before 6:20 am. By 7 pm, Ochocinco was trending worldwide on Twitter.

While neither trade has been made official, Ochocinco said in a tweet, ”God is so Good” after the news broke. Both players headed to the facility last night to meet with Belichick, a coach Ochocinco called ”a friend” in 2010. Suddenly, Trader Bill was back. Belichick left players shaking their heads in awe, aware that their world was quickly changing.

Ochocinco has been a character off the field, whether starring in…

Is it time for Wanderlei Silva to retire from the UFC?

Friday, July 29th, 2011

seth-edward-oneal.jpgWhen you start losing to red-headed douchebags like Chris Leben, then yes, maybe it’s time.

”The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva is arguably the most popular fighter that ever lived and is one of the greatest to have ever competed in the sport of MMA. During his tenure with Pride FC and the UFC, Silva faced some of the biggest names in the sport, which include wins over Rampage Jackson and Kazushi Sakuraba.

In his 33 wins, an incredible 23 of those wins came by way of knockout. Wanderlei was known for his explosiveness and knockout power, and this made him a very feared opponent.

At UFC 132, Wanderlei suffered one his most embarrassing losses to date, which came against Chris Leben, coming by way of knockout after just 27 seconds of the very first round. Wanderlei has already demanded a rematch, and in previous interviews, Wanderlei has stated that he would like to fight many more times before he retires.

But can he still do it at this level? Many pundits don’t think so.

There is a certain point when fighters NEED to retire for their own health and safety, and Wanderlei Silva is one of those fighters. In his last 10 fights, Wanderlei is 4-6, with four of those six losses coming by way of knockout. This is a worrying figure, as you have to consider the damage that has been done to Wanderlei’s head and the long term ramifications this could have on his career, and ultimately, his health.

Furthermore, Wanderlei has undergone two major surgeries in…

Will Brett Favre play for the Philadelphia Eagles?

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Yep, he’s thinking about postponing retirement yet again.

Brett Favre is feeling the itch to play in the NFL again. (Surprise, surprise…) It’s hard to blame him considering that there is a plethora of poor performers at the position currently rostered this 2011 NFL football season.

But according to his agent Bus Cook, he said that Brett Favre hasn’t talked to him about any sort of comeback and to his knowledge, Favre ”hasn’t talked to anybody else about a comeback” either and it is just speculation. The 41-year-old Favre has insisted he’s done playing football, but after several years of flirting with retirement, there are the rumors that claim Favre WILL come back.

As far as Favre is concerned, it’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN. And if he’s indeed coming back, the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in signing him to back up quarterback Michael Vick.

Michael Vick said on Twitter that he would be honored to have Favre as his backup. ”I would be honored to have Brett Farve as a backup. That will be amazing. Learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career,” Vick tweeted. But for some reason, he later deleted the post.

So how will the Eagles make this possible? The Eagles could be trading current backup Kevin Kolb…

Titans sign Matt Hasselbeck for the 2011 NFL Season

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

seth-edward-oneal.jpgAnd that pretty much means the end of Vince Young’s tenure in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Titans have landed their guy at quarterback, and a mentor for rookie Jake Locker this coming 2011 NFL football season. Yes, the team agreed to terms with former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on Wednesday morning, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The veteran Matt Hasselbeck will sign what sources say is a three-year contract for roughly $21 million. Exact terms aren’t immediately known. Free agent signings cannot take place until Friday.

”That’s so great for Tennessee,” said former Seahawks coach Jim Mora, who spent three years with Hasselbeck. ”Matt is a tremendous leader, he is tough, he is smart. With the lockout situation, yeah, he’s coming in late. But he’s a guy who will pick that offense up very, very quickly. He is hard-working, a studier, and he is just very, very smart. He’ll provide great leadership. The Titans just got a whole lot better.”

Hasselbeck the top choice the Tennessee Titans had in mind for a veteran to mentor Locker, the eighth overall pick this year, even before Kerry Collins decided to retire earlier this month.

They know damn well that Vince Young wouldn’t be that…

Minnesota Vikings set to sign Donovan McNabb?

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

It seems football has really returned.

As the NFL reopened for business, reports had the Vikings working on a trade for veteran Donovan McNabb coming to the 2011 NFL football season.

Speculation that Donovan McNabb might be headed to the Vikings last spring seemed to die down after the team used its first-round draft pick on Christian Ponder. But that changed on Tuesday, the first day that trade talks were allowed since the NFL lockout ended.

ESPN and the NFL Network both had reports linking McNabb to the Minnesota Vikings, with the former stating the Vikings were one of the few teams that have had trade discussions with the Redskins about the 34-year-old quarterback. One of the key issues, according to ESPN, would be the Vikings need to work out a restructured contract with McNabb. That’s because he’s due a $10 million bonus next month.

The McNabb reports surfaced as the Vikings got back to work trying to sign their own draft choices and undrafted rookies and opened negotiations with veterans. Players were welcomed back at team facilities for the first time since the lockout began on March 11.

The Vikings struck one deal, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with journeyman wide receiver Devin Aromashodu, and told defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy that he would be released on Thursday when such moves will be allowed. Kennedy’s cap hit of $2.5 million will come off the books.

Aromashodu, 27, who had been with the Chicago Bears, can’t officially…

Henderson takes on Emelianenko this Saturday

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

seth-edward-oneal.jpgThe winner will probably delay retirement for a couple more years.

Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson and former Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will meet Saturday July 30 in what has the potential to be the greatest MMA contest of all time.

Dan Henderson is the only man in history to hold two major MMA championships in two different weight divisions at the same time, defeating Murilo Bustamante at Pride Shockwave ’05 in the finals of a 183-pound tournament to become the first and last Pride 183-pound champion and then defeating the legendary Wanderlei Silva at Pride 33 to capture the 205-pound championship.

Henderson is also a decorated wrestler with six medals in Greco-Roman wrestling and was on the Olympic wrestling team in ’92 and ’96. He also won the UFC 17 Middleweight Tournament, and RINGS King of Kings 1999 Tournament.

As if his achievements in the sport were not enough, he added the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship to his list, becoming the oldest Strikeforce champion in history at 40 years old.

Now, Henderson will move up in weight once again to fight ”The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko, probably challenging himself to find out what else can his 40-year-old body accomplish.

Although Fedor is coming off of two losses in a row, the first two losses he suffered in his career, he is still widely considered as the greatest of all time in MMA. For ten years…

NFL Lockout Over! Let The 2011 NFL Season Begin!

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Are you ready for some football???

We know we are. After months of fans trying to figure how a bunch of rich footballers and their even richer owners could possibly be bickering about money, the lockout is finally over and we will get to see the 2011 NFL football season unfold.

You read it, the NFL floodgates got ready to be released as fans cheered and owners, coaches, and fantasy football players got ready for a historic roster scramble to put together a Super Bowl winner. Rookies must be signed, free agents wooed, and trades made, many in the space of a week, if teams don’t want to fall behind.

The four-month lockout had plenty of acrimony, muscle-flexing, and bad-mouthing. But soon after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and players’ union executive director DeMaurice Smith ditched the lawyers and began free-flowing conversations on the phone.

The league and players crossed the goal line on a fruitful 10-year deal which includes a compromise on revenues, a ”legacy fund” for retired players, a road map for continued growth for the league, and more money in the pockets of players, without whom football in America would be of the flag variety.

So let’s get the most important question out of the way first: Who won the Lockout Bowl, the players or owners?

NFL Teams can start signing players this Tuesday

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s going to be a mad scramble in who will teams keep to get that perfect mix they hope will produce a Super Bowl win.

Now that the lockout is done and the 2011 NFL football season set to begin a month, the next challenge facing NFL teams, players and agents is gonna’ be pretty tough, too.

There are about 1,000 veterans, draft picks and undrafted rookies that need to be signed by the 32 clubs. Each contract must fit the boundaries of the new, still – being – understood labor deal, such as each club’s cumulative payroll being within the new salary cap. Oh, this also needs to be done by the start of the preseason in little more than two weeks, although, preferably, much of it will be done this weekend.

”When the starter’s gun goes off, you’re going to have what historically has been a six – to seven – week period condensed to six to seven days,” agent Peter Schaffer said.

That shot will be fired Tuesday, with teams allowed to sign their own free agents, draft picks and undrafted players, plus make trades and start wooing Nnamdi Asomugha and hundreds of other veteran free agents. Those deals can’t be signed until Friday.

Another key date is Thursday, when teams can start cutting players to help get under the salary cap. ”For some guys, it’s going to be a big game of musical chairs,” agent Joe Linta said. ”You better sit in the first chair you see and not wait for another.”

For players in high enough demand that they can shop around…

The Cause of the Death of Amy Winehouse

Monday, July 25th, 2011

At this point, it’s anybody’s guess.

And in case you’ve been living under a rock lately, the singer Amy Winehouse has been found dead at her home in London over the weekend.

The Back To Black singer was found at the property by emergency services at 3.54pm, and it’s believed Winehouse’s death was due to a suspected drug overdose. Winehouse was apparently ‘beyond help’ when paramedics arrived.

Sources have also claimed Winehouse’s death was due to a drug overdose.

Two ambulance crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and a paramedic on a bicycle also attended, according to a spokeswoman. ”Sadly the patient had died,” she added.

A statement from Winehouse’s U.S. record label read: ‘We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.’

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.’

‘On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.’

‘Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage…’

Jay Cutler dumps his fiancee out of boredom

Monday, July 25th, 2011

seth-edward-oneal.jpgProbably because Jay Cutler, like most of the NFL athletes in the country these days, have nothing else to do these days.

With the 2011-12 NFL football season still on-hold, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler decided to call off his wedding with then fiancee Kristin Cavallari. Yep, this is not the fairy-tale ending Cavallari was hoping for.

After just 10 months together, Cavallari and the Chicago Bears quarterback have called off their engagement, a source confirms to PEOPLE. ”She got dumped,” a source says. ”She’s absolutely devastated. She can’t believe this is happening.”

The couple, who were planning a spring wedding, became engaged in April, when Jay Cutler popped the question in Mexico. They had been spending much of their time recently in Chicago, and Cavallari had planned to move there during the upcoming football season.

”She was planning her dream wedding, the date was set, the location, everything was set,” the source says. ”She’s in shock that the dream wedding she was planning is going to end this way.”

Just a week ago, Kristin Cavallari Tweeted about her engagement party. ”Thx to all my amazing friends for making my engagement party a blast last night!” she wrote.

The couple had completed their wedding registry, and Cavallari was determined to be in great shape for the wedding.

Saturday night Cavallari hit The Beverly, an L.A. lounge, and was…
