Arena Football pulls the plug on 2009 AFL Season

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgProbably because having Jon Bon Jovi as one of the team owners in this league has just become too embarrassing to swallow.

During the last few years, it has been customary that every time the NFL season draws to a close, the Arena Football League takes over to quench our thirst for more football action. But since the AFL is pulling the plug on the 2009 season, we would just have to settle for other stuff once the 2008-09 NFL football season is over.

And yes, the Arena Football League is pulling the plug on the coming season. After rumors came out that the AFL would have to ultimately shut down, league officials held a conference call and announced that no consensus had been reached.

They also claim that they will continue Pittsburgh Steelersto talk amongst each other in hopes of coming up with a better business model. I guess having this partnership with ESPN wasn’t enough to fool football fans into thinking that what they are watching from the AFL is football.

The league’s board of directors met by conference call, voting to shut down the coming season primarily because too many big-name owners (like Jon Bon Jovi perhaps?) and big-name cities said they would not return in 2009.

‘’We couldn’t be taken seriously if we lost too many teams, especially in big markets,'’ one league official said. ‘’That’s what was going to happen. We needed to shut down and reorganize.'’

The AFL has been going through an offseason of uncertainty the last few…

ArenaBowl XXII has Soul, Philadelphia wins Title

By: J.J. Jack

The City of Brotherly Love finally had their first ArenaBowl championship.

You read it, for a town with a namesake ‘’the city of brotherly love'’, and a team with a moniker that goes something as simple as ‘’Soul'’, Philadelphia winning its first Arena Football championship in ArenaBowl XXII was fitting after the dream season they just had.

The Philadelphia Soul became the winningnest team of the season, facing the defending ArenaBowl champions San Jose SaberCats behind backup Matt D’Orazio who was activated after starting QB Tony Graziani went down with an injury.

He had no idea that he Matt D'Oraziowill cap off an MVP season by leading his Soul to the ArenaBowl championship, beating the San Jose SaberCats 59-56. Yup, and I got to reiterate the fact that in only his second ArenaBowl game in three years, he wasn’t too bad at all.

Matt D’Orazio threw seven touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Philadelphia Soul to its first ArenaBowl title. Philly scored on all six of its first-half possessions, taking the lead for good with three straight TDs in the second quarter.

The San Jose SaberCats came up with a late rally in the final minute but fortunately to the Soul, they managed to hold on and win it all.

‘’I just really wanted to have fun and keep a smile on my face the whole game and enjoy this…'’

AFL Football’s ArenaBowl XXII is this Sunday

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIn case you didn’t know. Because we certainly didn’t.

The Arena Football League is ready to culminate their season with ArenaBowl XXII this Sunday. It’ll be between the San Jose SaberCats and the Philadelphia Soul and both teams will showcase two of the best football quarterbacks in the country wasting their careers in the AFL.

Yep, I really mean they’re simply wasting their football careers while playing in the AFL. Why not go take on the big dogs in the NFL instead of playing around a 50-yard makeshift football field? Jeez…

And when I stated that they are two of the best quarterbacks in football, I do mean it. SaberCats QB Mark Grieb is one of the smartest field generals in the AFL while Soul QB Matt D’Orazio could very well be the league’s biggest Cinderella story. Who can lead their team to victory this Sunday?

Let’s start with the San Jose SaberCats quarterback shall we?

San Jose QB Mark Grieb already has three ArenaBowl championship rings, going for his fourth one in seven years. Armed with…

Columbus meets San Jose in Arena Bowl XXI

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgOn July 29, Sunday, the only football we have will end, leaving us with nothing but baseball.

Yep, Arena Football’s annual spectacle, Arena Bowl, will be played on the 29th of July as the Columbus Destroyers and the San Jose Sabercats meet for Arena Bowl XXI.

Oh yeah, I did mean Columbus, and yep, this is the same Columbus Destroyers who lost five of their final six regular season games before entering the 2007 Arena Football playoffs. Guess what, after winning three straight playoff games, the Destroyers reached Arena Football’s biggest stage and will now be looking to end their Cinderella story this year with Arena Bowl championship rings.

The Columbus Destroyers are now drawing comparisons to the Arena Bowl XX champions, Chicago Rush, last year’s champions of Arena Football. The Rush also finished the regular season at a dismal 7-9 before catching fire in the playoffs to win the Arena Bowl XX.

The Destroyers will be looking to do the exact same thing.

‘’In the playoffs, it is about getting hot at the right time,'’ said Columbus Destroyers quarterback Matt Nagy. ‘’We really struggled at the end of the season, but we won our last game and have started to play consistently on offense and…'’

2007 Arena Football Divisional Playoffs begin

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s round two of the second best thing in American football playoffs these days and yep, I’m referring to Arena Football.

The 12 AFL playoff teams were narrowed down to eight and starting on Saturday, the final eight AFL teams will play in the 2007 Arena Football divisional playoffs for a spot in the final four.

The Colorado Crush and the San Jose Sabercats will kick things off in the divisional round of the 2007 AFL playoffs as they settle their differences in the American Conference side of the bracket.

The Colorado Crush surprised me last week, coming up a win over the Kansas City Brigade despite coming to that contest losers of FOUR STRAIGHT GAMES. Go figure. Colorado showed some resiliency against the Brigade yes, but coming to San Jose where the Sabercats have been waiting for them all week long, I would have to bet against Colorado yet again.

Besides, the San Jose Sabercats are just nasty at home.

Next, concluding Saturday’s double-header playoff broadcast, the Columbus Destroyers will meet the ridiculously dominant Dallas Desperados team. The Desperados have a team of veterans looking to prove why they are the…

Do you know it’s the 2007 AFL Football Playoffs already?

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgI didn’t, because I’m still mourning over this whole ‘’Chris Benoit death'’ shit.

No seriously, I am. But hey, football is in for another post-season action and we’re going to cover it (most of it anyway…) even if it is Arena Football. Watcha’ gonna’ do, we GOTS TO GET OUR FOOTBALL one way or another right? So here it is, the 2007 AFL football playoffs.

Just like what we have in the NFL football playoffs, there would be four teams with first round byes. The San Jose Sabercats, the Dallas Desperados, the Georgia Force and defending Arena Bowlchampions, Chicago Rush, will all take the first round off while theafl_playoffs.jpg other eight AFL football teams begin their 2007 AFL playoff campaign trying to get to the league’s biggest stage this year, Arena Bowl XXI. (Oh yeah, this entire football fiasco has been running for 21 years now…)

Starting off what would be a long weekend of Arena Football action, the Orlando Predators will take on the Philadelphia Soul on Friday to kick off the 2007 AFL football playoffs. Both organizations are happy to be in this year’s postseason battles despite not playing to the level many people expected them to be.

My pick? The Philadelphia Soul clearly has the edge since they have the defense capable of making the big plays. Besides, the Predators are finding a hard time finishing drives this season anyway.

On Saturday, the Columbus Destroyers will take on the…

VooDoo returns to New Orleans on AFL Football Friday

By: J.J. Jack

Yep, after the New Orleans Saints came up with a strong NFL Football season, it’s the VooDoo’s turn.

AFL Football will return to New Orleans as the New Orleans VooDoo hold their first home game of the AFL Football season since Hurricane Katrina bastardized the city. If you thought the Saints’ run last NFL Football season was something, you ain’t seen nothing yet as the expectations for the VooDoo will definitely be the same, if not more.

‘’As far as Arena Football goes, this is top of the line,'’ said New Orleans VooDoo quarterback Andy Kelly, who seized the chance to return to the team he played with before Hurricane Katrina forced the franchise to take a one-season break. ‘’You couldn’t ask for much more.'’

neworleans_voodoo.jpgNow I don’t know what Kelly means by that but you just know it’s about looking forward to a return to New Orleans.

The VooDoo will practice on the Saints’ 100-yard football field. Now I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. For all ya’ll who don’t know, AFL Football is played on a 50-yard field so I don’t know why they choose to practice in a full-size one.

At least the rest of the AFL will look forward to playing in New Orleans, with VooDoo owner Tom Benson also owning the Saints, the rest of the AFL Football teams will be expecting the…

NFL Betting: The Least Fun Thing to Do in New Orleans is Watch Football

By: J.J. Jack

The New Orleans Saints are once again destined for mediocrity sprinkled with moments of greatness in 2005. Although loaded with offensive talent, the Saints suspect defense and inconsistency make them once again a team not likely to make the playoffs or win more than 8 games. The win total for the Saints this year is […]
