BCS Rankings after Week 11 in College Football

By: J.J. Jack

Guess what, that little team Nick Saban has been coaching is still the No.1 team of the country.

You read it, the Alabama Crimson Tide, led by Nick Saban, is still at the top of the BCS rankings after 11 weeks into the 2008 NCAA college football season. Although they have an identical record with Texas Tech, the Crimson Tide was still chosen at No.1 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches’ polls.

Can the Alabama Crimson Tide stay on top of the BCS rankings? We still have more than a month of college pigskin left and until January arrives, the Crimson Tide will be hoping not to skip a beat.

And as stated, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, after Alabama Crimson Tidebeating Oklahoma State 56-20, are ranked No.2 with the same perfect 10-0 stand as Alabama’s. Right now, Alabama and Texas Tech have the final two spots for the BCS national championship game, can they keep it? Only time can tell for sure.

The (.879) Texas Longhorns are third, followed closely by the (.864) Florida Gators and the (.844) Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns, the Gators and the Sooners, all with one loss, are lurking and ready to take advantage as soon as the two front-runners slip.

Penn State’s loss to Iowa left the Crimson Tide…

Is Allen Iverson the Answer Detroit was looking for?

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgAfter two games and a 0-2 stand since making the trade, the obvious answer is a resounding NO.

It seems it was only yesterday when the Pistons were having a perfect 4-0 start to the 2008-09 NBA basketball season. Despite that, the front office felt it was about time to make a change and since they were STILL undefeated then, it makes you wonder why Joe Dumars decided to fix something that’s ain’t broken?

BAM. The Detroit Pistons traded away Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson. The move gave the Pistons a star caliber player after six years playing without one. The fans were obviously excited since Iverson is a former league MVP and a multi-time scoring champion. The wins should just keep on coming right?

WRONG. After two games Allen Iversonwith Allen Iverson, the Pistons looked stagnant, losing BOTH games. They lost to the Nets 103-96 in Iverson’s debut with the Pistons before losing to the Boston Celtics, 88-76, in Iverson’s home debut at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

It was one of the worst performances ever by the Pistons at the Palace. Sure, it was a game against the Boston Celtics, the defending world champions but still, that’s not an excuse the Pistons can use since they do have Iverson, a guy expected to score a lot for this team. And if they were confident enough to give up Chauncey Billups for this guy, they better come up with better performances than the monstrosity we saw against Boston.

How bad was it?

Iverson scored 10 points after going 4-for-11 shooting. And while that one was that bad already, Richard Hamilton

Did Timo Glock got paid by McLaren after letting Lewis Hamilton win the 2008 F1 World Championship?

By: Syndicate

After pulling off one of the most memorable screw jobs in sports, he has to get paid.

In case you didn’t know it yet, the 2008 F1 season finally concluded with Lewis Hamilton becoming the sport’s youngest world champion ever. Hamilton won the title in only his second year in Formula One. All thanks to Timo Glock, who literally made it all happen for him.

For all ya’ll who missed it, it was Timo Glock who let Lewis Hamilton pass merely meters away from the checkered flag to award the McLaren driver a fifth place finish, ultimately awarding him the 2008 F1 world title.

You see, Felipe Massa had it won after Timo Glockwinning his home grand prix. Ferrari was celebrating too, thinking that the world championship was theirs. But after watching Glock slow down meters away from the checkered flag to let Hamilton take fifth place, the celebration turned to despair. Yes, they just got their asses screwed over by Timo Glock and Toyota.

If Glock only managed to maintain his fifth position, Felipe Massa would’ve won the title. Instead, he decided to be the centerpiece of the title fight between Hamilton and Massa, taking it upon himself to be the most popular man in Formula One in the weeks to come without actually winning the title.

Did Glock deliberately let Hamilton pass? Did he hate Massa that…

Cardinals test 49ers coach on Monday Night Football

By: J.J. Jack

Because quite frankly, that’s probably the only thing you can look forward to in this ho-hum Monday night game.

Week 10 of the 2008-09 NFL football season continues at the University of Phoenix Stadium where the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers meet on Monday Night Football.

Why is it such a ho-hum game? Let’s start with the Arizona Cardinals. Sure, they are leading the NFC West with a solid 5-3 mark but because the NFC West is probably one of the worst divisions in football right now, nobody seems to care what the Cardinals have done.

The San Francisco 49ers on the Kurt Warnerother hand, are in the middle of a three-way tie for second place behind these Cardinals. But with a poor 2-6 start, how can the Niners be tied for second best? EASY. All of them other than the Cardinals are at 2-6, making this division one of the worst ones in professional sports.

Thankfully, it’s Monday Night Football, the only day of the week when you’ll only have one football game on TV. So I guess people will still watch this one anyway, even if they know they might just sleep through the whole thing.

For the Niners, this will be a test to their new head…

Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps can Play Poker

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgGood God almighty! Talk about versatility!

After virtually dominating the recently held 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Aquaman himself proved that not only can he make his mark on water, he can also go toe-to-toe with the best of them on the poker tables.

You read it, multi gold medalist Michael Phelps proved that he can also play poker after scoring a final table appearance at Caesars Palace. Sure, we all know that the guy can swim like a freaking fish and he can win gold medals in effortless fashion in the Olympics, but if we’re going to judge him based solely on event No.2 at the Caesars Palace Classic, yes, apparently, he can play awesome poker as well.

Michael PhelpsThe American swimmer, who as everyone knows, holds the distinction of having his face plastered all over the world for being the world record holder for most medals won in a single Olympics event, is no longer just a fish, at least not on the poker tables.

Phelps used some of his hard-earned endorsement money to buy into a $1,500 buy-in tournament and ended up finishing in ninth place in a field of 150 players. Not a bad payday for Phelps. He won over $5,000 for his feat.

It wouldn’t be fair to think that Michael Phelps is a total newbie when it comes to poker. Amanda Beard, another…

2008 World Series of Poker Part 10: Peter Eastgate

By: J.J. Jack

Who do you think will win the big one this Sunday?

In case you’ve been living under a rock lately, the 2008 World Series of Poker main event final table is ON this Sunday as the final nine players remaining, now dubbed as the ‘’November Nine'’ will play it out to determine who’ll be the 2008 WSOP champion.

One of the final nine participants this Sunday will be Peter Eastgate. Eastgate could become the youngest professional poker champion in the history of the World Series of Poker and yes, history could be made then.

If he achieves this enormous feat, he would Peter Eastgatesurpass the victory celebrated by Phil Hellmuth when he became champion at 24 years old dating back in 1989. Eastgate was just three years old during that time.

Hailing from Odense, he has an association with Ladbrokes Poker though has been wearing PokerStars gear and is primarily an online player.

Peter Eastgate is regarded as one of the top Internet pros in Denmark, where he specializes in short-handed and heads-up high limit cash games ($200/$400 levels). He has had a couple of promising offline showings recently however, most notably finishing 9th in the 2007 Irish Open for…

Roy Jones Jr. wants CHANGE too, meets Joe Calzaghe

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgCHANGE. Everybody has sure been using that word a lot these days.

But this time, it’s not President-Elect Barack Obama talking about it but Roy Jones Jr., the former heavyweight, former light heavyweight champion of the world. And although he has no plans of ‘’changing'’ the economic situation in the United States from a political seat, he wants CHANGE on Saturday night, that is changing Joe Calzaghe’s STILL unblemished record.

You read it, the former pound-for-pound king is looking to hand Joe Calzaghe the very first loss of his career. Calzaghe has been perfect so far with a 45-0 record, 32 of them coming by way of knockout. To say that Calzaghe has one of the most intimidating records in boxing is now an understatement but for some reason, Roy Jones is not fazed one bit.

Roy Jones Jr.The 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr. believes he can CHANGE Calzaghe’s dominant run so far inside the squared circle. ‘’That’s what I’m about,'’ Jones said at a news conference before breaking into a grin. ‘’You better believe, whatever it takes, I’ve got it.'’

Is this just wishful thinking for the guy once known as the best fighter in the world? Calzaghe seems determined to put a stamp on his legacy as a ‘’super power'’ in boxing. Some have already tried stopping this freight train and failed miserably. Last April 19, 2007, Bernard ‘’the Executioner'’ Hopkins did but ended up giving Calzaghe his 45th straight…

2008 NCAA College Football Week 11 Betting Picks (Can Alabama stay on top of the BCS Rankings?)

By: Syndicate

We told you you should watch out for the Crimson Tide this season.

And in case you don’t know it yet, the Crimson Tide are now the No.1 team in the nation after 10 weeks into the 2008 NCAA college football season. Can they keep their No.1 spot at the end of this weekend?

The Alabama Crimson Tide will try to clinch the west division title of the Southeastern Conference and a spot in the conference championship game when they battle with the LSU Tigers this Saturday. Oh yeah, as far as that No.1 spot in the BCS Rankings are concerned, you just know they want to keep that one too.

But for Crimson Tide head coach Penn State Nittany LionsNick Saban, it’s just another game. While his successor, LSU Tigers coach Les Miles, may agree with the sentiment, Saban has been adamant in downplaying the impact of his return to ‘’Death Valley'’ in his second year with Alabama. While he did coach a game at LSU while with the Miami Dolphins in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina, coming back to the campus he led to the 2003 BCS championship as a Crimson Tide coach is expected to produce a hostile reaction among the 92,000-plus LSU fans.

Can LSU, fueled by their fans, beat the No.1 team of the country? I don’t think so.

Next, we have No.2 Texas Tech Red Raiders looking to extend the…

Iverson to make his Pistons debut in New Jersey?

By: J.J. Jack

It’s this Friday and being a Piston fan like myself, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the former league MVP finally plays for my team.

And in case you’ve been living under a rock, the Pistons and the Nuggets engineered the first blockbuster trade of the 2008-09 NBA basketball season after the Pistons traded Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Nuggets for Allen Iverson.

And since both Billups and McDyess hasn’t even started taking their physicals yet, Allen Iverson can’t suit up for his new team until they do and complete it since the NBA has this rule that players who were traded between two teams will OFFICIALLY be available for their new teams at the same time.

That means, the Detroit Pistons can’t Allen Iversontake advantage of having a player like Allen Iverson on the court yet until their former players in Denver complete the mandatory physical.

And since Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl already said that their new players will be taking their physicals some time this week, Iverson could be playing for the Pistons in New Jersey against the Nets.

Until then, we will continue to hope that nabbing Iverson was the right way to go for the 313 because if it all explodes on Joe Dumars’ face, letting a guy like Chauncey Billups go would be the worst thing he has done since drafting Darko Milicic right after LeBron…
