Updated BCS Rankings after Week 10 in the 2008 NCAA College Football Season (Yes, we have a new No.1…)

By: Syndicate

Surprise surprise, we have a new team on top.

You read it, after two weeks of consistency, the revolving door of the 2008 NCAA college football season starts moving again with a new team on top of the BCS rankings.

Yes, we have a new team on top and after 10 weeks into the season, the Alabama Crimson Tide, with a still perfect record of 9-0, gets the nod after the Texas Longhorns lost to state rivals Texas Tech Red Raiders over the weekend.

Of course, after beating the former No.1 team in the country, the Texas Tech Red Raiders get the second overall spot. The title ‘’third best team in the country'’ belongs to the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Alabama Crimson TideOne thing to take note after week 10 would have to be the fact that if the undefeated Red Raiders of the Big 12 and the undefeated Crimson Tide of the Southeastern Conference keep on winning, they’ll probably meet each other playing for a BCS national championship come January.

Alabama had a BCS average of .9747. Texas Tech has .9372 and Penn State .9286.

The unbeaten Penn State Nittany Lions will still need Alabama or Texas Tech to lose a game to earn a BCS national championship bid. However, with Texas Tech facing…

2008 NCAA College Football Week 10 Betting Picks

By: J.J. Jack

Week 10 continues with probably our favorite team to watch this year, the Crimson Tide.

Yep, out of all the teams to watch this 2008 NCAA college football season, the Alabama Crimson Tide is probably the most interesting one. And as long as Nick Saban, the same guy who bamboozled the Dolphins a few years ago when he shockingly left them for college pigskin, is running things, nothing is always as it seems.

Nick Saban had the Alabama Crimson Tide in excellent shape heading into November last season, having turned the team from an afterthought to an SEC contender in his first year on the job. Saban’s team, though, couldn’t end its struggles in the season’s final month. With a spot in the BCS championship game now within their grasp, the second-ranked Crimson Tide will have considerably higher stakes at play during their slate this November, starting this Saturday with a game against Arkansas State.

Alabama Crimson TideAlabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) was standing at 6-2 and ranked No.17 at the end of last October, an impressive climb in Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa after he inherited a program coming off a 6-7 finish in 2006. The Crimson Tide lost all four of their games in November, including an ugly 21-14 defeat at home to Louisiana-Monroe, a member of the Sun Belt conference.

The Arkansas State Red Wolves on the other hand, have beaten the only BCS conference opponent they’ve played this season, topping Texas A&M 18-14 in their Aug. 30 season opener. Although the Red Wolves may have trouble stopping the rush…

Can the Texas Longhorns remain undefeated against the Texas Tech Red Raiders this Saturday?

By: Syndicate

8-0. That’s where the Longhorns are at.

After nine weeks into the 2008 NCAA college football season, the Texas Longhorns are still undefeated, sitting at the very top of the BCS rankings. They are looking for a BCS national championship game come January and a win against rivals Texas Tech will put them closer from that goal.

The Texas Longhorns have remained undefeated by answering each challenge in a series of games against ranked teams. They have the Texas Tech Red Raiders next, a team that has put together its own unbeaten start, making this rivalry game from Texas something you can’t afford to miss.

The Longhorns are Texas Tech Red Raiderslooking for their fourth straight win over a team ranked 11th or better on Saturday night when they visit the No.6 Texas Tech Red Raiders, who are hoping to protect their highest ranking in 32 years in the second of four consecutive games against Top 25 opponents.

The Longhorns, 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12, took over the top spot after defeating then No.1 Oklahoma Sooners on Oct.11. The Longhorns followed that up with a 56-31 victory over then No.11 Missouri Tigers on Oct.18 and a 28-24 win over then No.7 Oklahoma State Cowboys last Saturday, becoming the first team to earn a unanimous No.1 ranking in consecutive weeks since Ohio State…

College Football Teams on top of the BCS Rankings

By: J.J. Jack

Week 10 is already here and we’re probably expecting this weekend to shatter these rankings again.

But until then, these are the teams on top of the mountain at this point of the 2008 NCAA college football season. The second half of the college football year has already begun and positioning is as important as ever with the BCS Bowl Games in January just around the corner.

The Texas Longhorns stay atop of the BCS rankings after nine weeks. However, staying undefeated won’t be easy for Texas, which plays at Texas Tech on Saturday, but if Colt McCoy and the rest of the crew manage to, a trip to Miami for the Jan.8 title game will be theirs.

Texas LonghornsThey are closely followed by the Alabama Crimson Tide, who are also undefeated with an 8-0 mark. However, they are being overshadowed by the fact that the Penn State Nittany Lions have now joined in on the fray after their big win at Ohio State.

The top two teams in the final BCS standings will play for the national title and with the rise of the Penn State Nittany Lions, nothing is certain just yet. Besides, we still have eight weeks to go for that anyway.

After a week off, Penn State plays at Iowa (5-3) and finishes the season with home games against Indiana (3-5) and…

The South Florida Bulls meet the Cincinnati Bearcats in Week 10 of the 2008 NCAA College Football Season

By: Syndicate

In what is the only football game we have on a Thursday night, we have a good one between two good football programs in the nation.

Week 10 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues as the No.23 South Florida Bulls take on the Cincinnati Bearcats with South Florida looking to regroup and get back on track after key losses that dropped them further down the BCS rankings.

The South Florida Bulls with an overall record of 6-2, 1-2 in conference play, is STILL the only ranked team in the Big East. They rose as high as No.10 in the AP poll at some point this year. However, losses to Pittsburgh and Louisville have put them on the verge of falling out of the rankings this season and these guys know they have to put it back together before time runs out. The Bulls are trying to avoid a repeat of last season when they were ranked as high as No.2 in the poll, but then dropped their next three to fall out of contention for a Big East title.

Matt GrotheThese guys came in averaging 194.6 rushing yards per game, led by the mobile quarterback Matt Grothe and tailback Mike Ford. However, Grothe only had 10 carries for minus-27 yards last Saturday while Ford was held to five carries for 13 yards in limited action.

On the other hand, the Cincinnati Bearcats, with an overall record of 5-2, 1-1 in conference play, are also coming off a loss after having their four-game winning streak snapped Saturday, 40-16 by Connecticut.

Cincinnati only allowed a total of 55 points during the four-game winning streak, but as impressive…

2008 NCAA College Football Week 9 Betting Picks

By: J.J. Jack

Week 9 of college football promises to shake things up a bit in the BCS standings.

You read it, the 2008 NCAA college football season continues this Saturday with quite a few ranked teams looking to continue their ascend towards title contention come January.

One of which is the No.8 Texas Tech Red Raiders. They are undefeated so far, riding on their longest undefeated streak in more than 30 years. They have their first of four games against ranked opponents this Saturday when they visit the No.19 Kansas State Jayhawks.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have Tim Tebowtaken advantage of a relatively easy schedule to stay unbeaten through seven games for the first time since 1976, when it opened 8-0 en route to its last 10-win season.

The Red Raiders, though, are entering a daunting four-game stretch that features matches with the Jayhawks, No.1 Texas Longhorns, No.7 Oklahoma State Cowboys and No.4 Oklahoma Sooners and yes, it only gets harder for Texas Tech from here.

Meanwhile, Kansas hasn’t been able to get it done in its first two meetings with ranked teams this season. The Jayhawks lost 37-34 to then No.19 South Florida last Sept. 12 before suffering a…

Boise State Broncos visit San Jose State Spartans Friday

By: J.J. Jack

Can the Spartans stop the rampaging Broncos ready to take over their turf?

That is the question coming into this Friday night’s game between Boise State and San Jose State as Week 9 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues.

The Boise State Broncos have one of the best offensive schemes in college football. They’re so good at scoring with the ball, even their defense scores some. They are ranked 13th in the nation with still a spotless record of 6-0 overall. And in case you still have no idea what I’m trying to stress here, not even 300 Spartans can stop these Broncos, those from the San Jose State Spartans anyway.

Chris Petersen served as Boise State Broncosoffensive coordinator for the Boise State Broncos from 2001-2005 before taking over as coach in 2006. They were ranked in the top 10 in scoring every season since 2002, helping them to make up for a defense that failed to distinguish itself for much of that stretch.

That balance has shifted in 2008, however. The Broncos still have a strong offense, ranking third in the WAC with 32.5 points per game. The defense though, has been better and just as responsible for the team’s second 6-0 start in three seasons under Petersen.

Boise State is second in the FBS in scoring defense while only allowing 10.5 points per game. It’s given up more than…

West Virginia Mountaineers host Auburn Tigers Thursday

By: J.J. Jack

Week 9 continues with a face-off between two teams having similar difficulties on the field.

Yes, the 2008 NCAA college football season continues this Thursday with a game between two football programs trying to get their season going. The Auburn Tigers visit the West Virginia Mountaineers and once again, we have a good one for you.

The West Virginia Mountaineers have won three in a row after dropping two straight to fall out of the top 25 national rankings for 46 straight weeks. The team has been struggling to score with only an average of 22.2 points per game. Not bad if you’re in the NFL, terrible if you’re playing on the college gridiron where defense is non-existent.

The Mountaineers plan to strengthen their Pat Whitedefense against the Auburn Tigers this Thursday. And since keeping the ball away from the opposing team is the best defense any team can take advantage of on the field, West Virginia having their man back to keep the ball on their side is definitely an advantage.

You read it, West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Patrick White will be playing for this Thursday’s game after missing the Syracuse game with a head injury. Backup quarterback Jarrett Brown, who hustled last game during Pat White’s absence, suffered a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, making White’s return to the field a very VERY important one.

The Auburn Tigers, on the other hand, have bizarre…

Oklahoma Sooners to put the BOOM on Kansas State

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgOnce again, it’ll be all about the BOOM.

Week 9 of the 2008 NCAA college football season continues as the Kansas State Wildcats host the visiting Boomer Sooner offense from Oklahoma.

Ranked No.4 in the nation, the Oklahoma Sooners look to continue their quest for their seventh Big 12 South crown in nine years when they visit Kansas State.

The annual rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas usually goes a long way towards determining the champion of the Big 12 South. Oklahoma did its part to remain in the hunt last Saturday.

A win over Oklahoma Soonersthe Kansas State Wildcats this Saturday will get the Sooners closer to their ultimate goal.

Sam Bradford may be the biggest key to the Sooners’ title chances as the sophomore ranks third in the FBS with 2,520 passing yards, second with 26 touchdowns and fifth with a 71.4 completion percentage.

Sam Bradford hopes to continue his success in his first career game against Kansas State. The Wildcats (4-3, 1-2) were held to a season-low point total in a 14-13 defeat at Colorado last Saturday.

They are averaging 23.3 points in their three losses compared to 50.8 in four wins.

Oklahoma has won five of its last six meetings with Kansas State to take a 68-17-4 advantage in the all-time series.

Kansas State’s last win in the series was five seasons ago, when the…

2008 BCS Rankings after Week 8 in College Football

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgFor the first time this season, one team got through a week in college football still on top of everybody.

You read it, the Texas Longhorns came into Week 8 of the 2008 NCAA college football season on top of the BCS rankings and after they handily beat the Missouri Tigers 56-31 last Saturday, Texas is still on top of the mountain.

The Texas Longhorns stayed ahead of the field when the season’s first BCS standings were released Sunday. The Longhorns appear to be in position to play for the national title on Jan. 8 in Miami if they can stay unbeaten and after routing the No.11 Missouri Tigers last weekend, the Longhorns showed they have what it takes to pull it off.

The Alabama Crimson Tide follows Texas LonghornsTexas in second place. The Crimson Tide has a BCS average of .949, which bodes well for Alabama. These guys will be a tough team to catch provided they can stay unbeaten.

Speaking of unbeatens, the Penn State Nittany Lions, with a .867 average, will have to keep winning and hope Texas or Alabama slips if they want to play for the BCS national title come January. They sit on third place and could be one of the darkhorse teams on that college gridiron to create quite a splash on the title chase.

On the other hand, the No.4 Oklahoma Sooners (.832) might STILL be able to catch Penn State, even if coach Joe Paterno’s team keeps on winning.

The USC Trojans are fifth, the Oklahoma State Cowboys sixth and the…
