Atlantic City sportsbooks still waiting at starting gate but odds are getting better

By: Neo

Last year, nearly $2 billion was bet on sports in Nevada.

Atlantic City wants to follow but lawmakers need to overcome several hurdles before wagers can be placed on games.

Some New Jersey lawmakers believe the increased revenue from sports betting would boost state coffers and make Atlantic City more attractive as a tourist destination. Casinos worry that increased competition from nearby states, including those that offer slot machines at racetracks, will cut revenues.

New Jersey Nets NBA OddsFederal law bans sports wagering in most states. However, lawmakers here are pushing sports betting as a way to stave off a budget deficit and to help Atlantic City casinos fight competition.

Federal law allows sports betting in Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana, but only the first two states offer it. Nevada has full-service sports books, while Oregon has a state-run pro football pool during the season.

The federal government gave New Jersey the opportunity to legalize sports betting in 1994, but proponents could not gather enough support and the issue never made it to the ballot for voter approval.

Legalizing sports betting seems to be a longshot but supporters say the state could overturn the federal law and they are urging the attorney general to contest the issue.

However, State Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew wants to give sports betting a shot. “The prize is worth the extra effort” according to him and Agent Neo…

Anti-Online Gambling Bill Passed As Security Measure.

By: Poppy Z

Don’t ask me, I dunno either.

In a move that caught everyone off-guard, the US Senate passed the controversial Anti-Online Gambling Bill, with a shady backdoor deal on the side.

In a Congressional back room deal, opponents of Internet gambling have added language to port security legislation that would prohibit online wagering.

Yeah, the bill was tied to an unrelated port security bill. So opponents will have no choice but to pass it since we are now talking about national security. Call me stupid but really I don’t get it.

Anti-Online Gambling Bill Passed Anyway, the main meat of the bill that is sure to be signed into law by the embattled President George Bush, is preventing the transfer of funds into online gambling accounts.

Banks are now required to monitor transactions, and deny any transactions from payment providers for online gaming. There is already much debate over whether third party processors, such as NETeller will be affected, PokerNews reported.

Of course we all know that the sudden speed of passing this bill has much to do with the coming mid-term elections. What with all the Iraq war scandal, Mark Foley’s homo-erotic emails with a teenage congressional page, and Republicans feeling the heat of losing majority in both houses.

There has to be some sacrificial offering to appease their fanbase. The question is will it work?

Will millions of Americans today hooked on online gaming, especially online poker, the politicians are sure to lose votes with…

Friendster suing MySpace for patent infringement?

By: MaxCohen

Friendster isn’t making friends lately.

User-wise, it is no longer the No. 1 in online social networking sites. Competition-wise, it just scored a new patent seen as a ploy to sue top rival MySpace, and major rivals like Facebook, Xanga, Multiply, and upcomer Bebo.

Who will Friendster sue first? When will Friendster start suing? Grab a pen and lay it on at Bodog betting props. Friendster is fast making new enemies.

Friendster was founded in 2002 and held the top spot in online social network service until 2004, when it was overtaken by MySpace. It filed patent 7,069,308 in June 2003, which it was finally awarded three years later, in June 2006. Friendster president Kent Lindstrom says the patent “underscores we’re a thought leader in this space.”

Whose space? The patent seeks to protect as intellectual property Friendster’s specific methods for online social networking, built around the idea of ‘degrees of separation‘, especially Friendster’s methods of searching people online. Combined with new site improvements, it is hoped to turn Friendster’s fate around and bring in new members.

Alexa grants Friendster’s plight has improved, its daily reach climbing from…
