Lost Dogs: Gambling Boom Puts Pooches in Pinch

doggun.jpgSome dogs have reached the end of their very short leashes. With all of the commotion about online gambling, poker, sports betting, etc., somebody under the gambling umbrella had to suffer. Who would’ve thought it would be the dogs? According to an AP story, the attention garnered by the rest of the gambling industry is putting plenty of greyhound racing tracks on the brink of closing. In fact, of the 46 tracks nationwide, most of them are suffering huge financial losses and the smaller ones are in fact closing. Where is the greyhound equivalent of Smarty Jones? If nothing is done to save the industry, there will be more tragedies like the one of Nipper, shown in this picture, who was so despondent about the lack of interest in his sport that he tried to take his own life with a snub-nosed handgun. Thankfully, his ownder intervened and Nipper received a prescription to Wellbutrin and is currently seeing a therapist.

greyhoundsexy.jpgApparently there’s something else going at Wimbledon besides tennis and strawbery puking. There is also the William Hill Greyhound Derby where the little pumped-up pooches chase around the fake bunnies in the summer nights of London. So for all you lucky punters who don’t have to suffer through a miserable NBA finals, we’re jealous that you actually get to bet on something that has signifiance and mistreated animals. And the good ol’ blokes at Gambling UK even have some good betting odds for the highly regarded Round Four races from dog-betting sensei Peter Meldrum:

7.40 Gregs Ceilidh 3-1

7.55 Shelbourne Nina 5-4

8.10 Zigzag Dutchy 4-6

8.30 Rio Limo 6-1

8.45 Ningbo Jack 7-2

9.05 Velvet Rebel 9-2

9.40 January Tiger 11-2

deadDog_L.jpgApparently, you don’t have to be a senior citizen living in Tampa to love the dog track. Today marks the first round of one of the bigger greyhound races, the Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon which gets more action than a field hockey player at an Indigo Girls concert.
