Pokering Again Around Flori-duh

So poker tournaments are allowed again in Florida? Well, kinda. We’ll let Online Poker News explain:
“Currently, Derby Lane offers almost the same tournament rules, as he did before. The track has reportedly invented a rather original way to bypass the law. Currently, racetrack management produces tournament chips that are worth a fraction of a penny. This move creates the illusion of playing in a high stakes game, without exceeding the state’s betting limit.”
We like illusions, particularly if they involve grown men in sequins with white tigers. This is just ridiculous though. It’s purely semantics to say “I raise five-sixteenths of a cent” versus “I raise five dollars.” They’re tournament chips, they have no value you can walk away with. Score another circumvention around idiocy for the good guys.

Poker’s Legal In Florida… Kinda

The only thing that can make a trip to the horse or dog track even more fun? Throw a poker room in the back, and we may never go home again. Florida’s got poker at the tracks, but there’s a couple of problems. The Orlando Sentinel loops us in to one of them:
“The dispute began when Calder Race Course in Miami and Dania Jai-Alai sued to challenge limits on wagering and entry fees.
A judge agreed, ruling there is no language in Florida law that allows the division to limit poker tournaments.
But, when South Florida pari-mutuels began violating state law offering poker tournaments with no limits on wagering, the state decided to repeal all tournament rules and shut them down, said David J. Roberts, the wagering division’s director.”
Why would they shut poker tournaments down? The other problem in Florida is that the maximum bet on any round is $2. Because the worth of tournament chips can be tied to an entry fee that exceeds $2, there’s obviously questions about the legality of tournaments that are escaping all rationality. Then again, this is Florida we’re talking about. Try not to have your election or your feeding tube in the hands of these ridiculous lawmakers.
