Minnesota Twins (75-69, F. Liriano)

at

Detroit Tigers (65-78, S. Douglass)

Best Line: MIN -120, DET +110

This is a tough call to make considering that the Tigers(yes, these Tigers) are hitting an alarming .291 as a team this year against left handers. And the Twins are trotting out a spicy lefthander named Francisco Liriano today, who according to some who’ve seen him pitch, is one of the hardest, nastiest throwing lefties getting the big call-up today. So, do we go with the Tigers and their tee-ball-esque numbers against lefties or continue with our theory that stud-like rookie pitchers in their first major league outings consistently do well? We’ll go with Liriano today, pay a little bit for him, and hope for a solid 6 to 7 inning output. Here’s hoping the Twins’ bullpen doesn’t urinate on its shoes and that Sean Douglass doesn’t go all Jack Morris on us. We need a win. Desperately.

Chopping Lines: Beware of the Giant Young

Texas Rangers (69-70, C.Young)

at

Minnesota Twins(72-66, B. Radke)

Best Line: TEX +109, MIN -112

It’s pretty much safe to say that the Texas Rangers would be favored in this game if they were at home, since they bat about .546 there. Well, it’s not that high, but you get the idea. Today, however, we’ll focus on Chris Young, the Rangers’ 8-foot-tall starter who was stellar the first half of the season, hit a rough patch, and has now pitched effectively once again the last two months. On the other hand, Twins’ starter Brad Radke is king of the WHIP, but has a tendency to give up home runs in bunches. And with Texas’ lineup full of guys that can easily jack one out on a moment’s notice(even portly catcher Rod Barajas hit five homers last week), this game looks like it could be decided by the donger quite easily.(Yes. We said ‘donger’.) Look for Radke to pitch efficiently, but get snagged on the long-ball once again.

PICK!: TEX +109

Chopping Lines: Make Your Own Wood Joke

Minnesota Twins (70-62, K. Lohse)

at

Kansas City Royals (42-88, M. Wood)

Best Line: KC ROYALS +153, MINN -156

We love Mike Wood. Even though he got dinged by the Yankees his last time out—before pitching 5 inning shutout ball going head-to-head with Randy Johnson—he’s still the man who stopped the Royals miserable 19-game losing streak. Let’s just say he’s pitched well enough in the last few weeks to conceivably be the Royals staff ace. The Twins are making a wild card push right now, but they offer up girlish Kyle Lohse whose been running through a streak of hard-luck losses his last 10 starts after almost being demoted to the bullpen. Plus he has a vagina. We believe we mentioned that already. There’s no reason to think that Lohse is worth that much bank on the Twins side and we think Wood’s got just enough savvy to pull this out.

PICK! KC ROYALS +153

Chicago White Sox (75-46, F. Garcia)

at

Minnesota Twins (66-58, J. Santana)

Best Line: MINNESOTA -1 1/2 +125(Run line), CHI SOX +157(Money Line)

Twins’ pitcher Johan Santana is dominant throughout most of the season, but especially in August. In his career, Santana is 16-4 in the sweatiest, stinkiest, most depressing month of the year. That’s the sign of a good pitcher in our book. That and uncut stirrups. We know the White Sox are in first place and giving up a run and a half to a first place team is not really the move to do. But come on, isn’t it worth it to spot a run and a half to the White Sox against Santana who will most likely give up no more than two runs anyway? Sure, Freddy Garcia is having a fine season, but he also has trouble against the Twins, sporting a 4.42 ERA against them lifetime. So, fuck Freddy.
