The new rules implemented this season in the NHL to make scoring more prevalent in a league that has been accused of being yawn-inducing has some of the bookies a little confused about how to handicap around them. The new two-line passing rules and the elimination of ties are making it tougher for bookmakers to find easy profits, according to Covers. Another factor is the major overhauling most teams have undergone this off-season—it’s tough to figure out who’s the starting front line on your own hometown team, let alone the rest of the league—which will take a while for bookies to figure out the underdogs and favorites. One of our problems with the new rules is the regulations on the size of goalie equipment. We like our goalies looking like members of Gwar and not in those skinny little street hockey pads and catcher’s masks that we wore growing up. Regular season starts October 5th and we’re sure most of you had no idea.
