NHL Betting: The Death of the 1/2 Puck Starts at 10 a.m.

Today marks the beginning of the revamped, reconfigured, re-animated National Hockey League and that means that anybody who made it through an insufferably long off-season with nothing to bet on has finally been rewarded for their perseverance. With the new hockey rules in place, bettors everywhere are rejoicing over the fact that there are no more 1/2 puck quotes on hockey bets thanks to the whole “no overtime” rule. However, it also makes this whole shootout ending a little more difficult to bet. Here’s the rundown from Oddjack reader Bubba B on some of the problems with the new hockey season for betting:
” Yes,the rules changes have made it a bit difficult to make lines (and handicap) these early games. But the big story is how hockey odds have changed forever. No ties means that there will no longer be quotes of half a goal (i.e.: Rangers -0.50 +110, Isles +0.50 -130). The split line (even-1/2) becomes much less useful, since there are no ties. There will also be initial confusion about what exactly is the final score- Will the team that wins the shootout be given one extra goal, so a 2-2 after regulation/OT becomes 3-2….or will the final score (for betting purposes) be 2-2?
And, does it matter regarding the # of successful Sudden Death penalty shots (team wins shootout 3-0 or say 2-1.”
