The oh so untimely death of Pat Morita last week has hit no city harder than Las Vegas. Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports on an email from Vegas tourist Steve Snider, who had an encounter with the Morita clan recently at the MGM Grand:
“”But what I recall most about our conversation was his relationship with Redd Foxx. He teared up several times when speaking about Mr. Foxx and the day he had died. Pat told me that he was the first to receive the call about Mr. Foxx’s passing.”
When fans approached the table with photo requests, Morita “would refer to me as his grandson,” wrote Snider, adding that he is blond with blue eyes.
At the end of the night, when the server (at the MGM) came to clean off the party’s table, Snider said Morita “stopped the server, kind of pushed her back, then he stood up and slapped his arms down on the table, famously pronouncing, “Wax on, wax off.”“
We’re unsure what’s more astonishing - that Morita would trot out the Miyagi reset, or that he was pals with Redd Foxx. Either way, we miss that little dude more than we thought we would.
