Oddjack Advisor: Making Tough Poker Problems Simple

Poker Counselor’s Corner is back on PokerNews, but since we were dissatisfied with his answer to a reader question, we thought we’d take a crack at it instead.
I play in a regular weekly game. One guy seems to have an amazingly great read on me. He seems to call me every time I am bluffing. When I raise with a good hand, he always folds. It happens too often to be dumb luck. I don’t think I’m giving off tells, but this guy has my number and it drives me crazy. How do I beat him?
First things first… sunglasses. You are giving something away, it’s obvious. Whether it’s sunglasses or a welder’s mask, you need to hide your eyes because you’ve got fear written all over them. Second, if he’s calling you every time you’re bluffing, isn’t there an obvious solution? That’s right, bluff more. He can’t possibly call every bet you make if you’re making a lot of them. You also mention that when you’re raising with a good hand, he’s getting out of the pot. So why are you raising? You should slowplay those pocket rockets from the jump, he’ll never see that coming. So what if the big blind’s three-gap offsuit cards catch two pair from time to time? At least the guy who’s reading you like Maxim in the bathroom won’t have such a good idea on what you’re doing for strategy anymore. We hope this helps!
