Ways To Improve NBA Futures Betting. Now, Stop Yawning.
filed under Sports Betting : NBA
After a woefully anti-climatic seven game series featuring the Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs, it’s kind of tough for casual bettors to not suffer from narcoleptic episodes while trolling the list of teams and the payout odds for next year’s NBA champion. Apparently, nobody likes to bet on NBA championship futures. The longshot odds are so implausible that it makes no sense to start throwing $100 on the Charlotte Bobcats before the beginning of the season. Unless, of course, you own real estate in the Charlotte area or just have an unhealthy crush on Emeka Okafor. Covers bookmaking zapatista Stephen Noyer looks at NBA futures betting and offers up some suggestions for how to make the process a little more intriguing for online bettors.

Perpetually stoned looking Utah Utes Center Andrew Bogut is so confident he’ll be the number one pick in tomorrow’s NBA draft that he’s already wearing a Milwaukee Bucks baseball hat and has even begun dating the mascot. Well, not really, but he has gone on the record about what a 2005 Milwaukee Bucks starting lineup would look like—with him in it. And the bookmaking brothers over at Covers have also concluded that the betting public sees Bogut going number one, as he is now a monstrous -500 favorite to take the top spot. The second favorite for the number one pick is University of North Carolina freshman Marvin Williams, who was the sixth man on the championship team last year, but is apparently blessed with the best athleticism and dreaded “upside” that draft nooks love to play-up. However, we see it simply as whether or not the Milwaukee Bucks want to wait two years for Marvin Williams to develop or spend their number one pick and millions of dollars on the second coming of Cherokee Parks.

Wouldn’t it have been great if Detroit Pistons long-armed forward Tayshaun Prince made that three-point heave at the end and completely botched up what seemed like an easy 5.5 cover for the San Antonio Spurs? Would’ve been interesting. But after everybody played what was supposed to be the sure thing over point total of 174(39-38 at halftime…wha???) after the other games in the series smashed through it, a Prince spread-killer at the end of the game probably would’ve caused many people’s hearts to explode inside their chests. Alas, the San Antonio Spurs are thrice champions, the NBA season is over, and now we can focus our efforts on more lucrative betting endeavors, like pig racing.

Yes, we know you’re all fired up for tonight’s epic battle between the San Antonio Spurs and the Detroit Pistons at 9 p.m. on ABC. So fired up that you may even considering throwing a little wager at it: My god, the line is the same as last game! The Spurs can’t lose! The o/u is 174 and the over has cashed in five times! My son won’t need his tuition money for another two months anyway! or Good Lord! The Pistons are still geting 5.5! They have the momentum! They can’t lose! My girlfriend will completley understand if I use the engagement ring money to try to double up…

NBA Finals: Holy Crap, Game 7
filed under Sports Betting : NBA
Well, there you have it. Everybody should’ve learned their lessons so far: 1) Don’t give Robert Horry the last shot 2) Don’t count out the Pistons in any situation 3) Betting lines are shit. The San Antonio Spurs went into this game as heavy favorites, with home court, Big Shot Bob momentum, and it seemed the Detroit Pistons were facing insurmountable odds—or 5 1/2 points, actually. But like they’ve done so many times before, the Pistons proved that as long as there is still games to be played, they’ll show up. They’ll even iron their jerseys. Thursday night’s game 7 is poised to be one where every single thing we’ve learned so far could either be bought into play—or completely thrown out the window like a condom filled with Redi Whip. And Rasheed Wallace—pilloried for his lack of defense in the final seconds of game 5—came up huuuge in the final minutes of last night’s game to prevent the Spurs from coming back again. Whew. Game 7, huh? Not a bad ending to a lackluster season. We’ll wait to make our picks tomorrow, after a nice meal, and a foot massage.

NBA Finals: So Much for the Afterglow

Tonight’s game 6 of the NBA finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Detroit Pistons is poised to be an anti-climatic letdown after the high drama of Big Shot Mother Effin’ Bob in game 5 gave fans a glimmer of hope that this series wouldn’t be visual melatonin for the sleep-deprived viewers. Tonight’s game shows the Spurs as 5 1/2 point favorites at home—where they’ve dominated throughout the series—and gives a 172 o/u line. San Antonio has the confidence, the home court, the chance for its(are you kidding??)THIRD RING and will most likely not falter. Here’s hoping the Spurs do make it a little exciting for the fans and just let the Pistons hang around and force Robert Horry to sink the game-winning shot again. But this time they should pass it to him at half-court and have him mule-kick it into the net. Anyway…

NBA Finals: Damn You, Robert Horry

Sweet Christ, did anybody see that coming? We finally got a good game out of the NBA Finals and Robert Horry proves that, if anything, he IS the ultimate clutch shooter( and heartbreaker) in the playoffs, as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons 96-95 in overtime, and Detroit’s -3 1/2 points. So, now the series is back in San Antonio with the Spurs at -5.5 and the o/u set at 172.5. Sigh. This series has officially turned into a toss-up and a gambler’s nightmare.Do you go with momentum and the Spurs? You should. But then again the Detroit Pistons have proved themselves resilient in situations like this. Like the cat that’s lost eight of its lives that gets tossed off a bridge and some how lands on the mast of a passing yacht on the way down. But we’ll go with the team with momentum and the Manu Ginobilis and predict San Antonio closes it out Tuesday night. We think. We’ll see how we feel tomorrow if the line changes.

NBA Finals: Riding Rip Hamilton’s Nose Mask
filed under Sports Betting : NBA
After the Detroit Pistons predictably dismantled the San Antonio Spurs in game 3 of the NBA Finals Tuesday night, there are now wishful feelings that, perhaps, tonight’s 9 p.m. game on ABC (and the rest of the series) will be more interesting than attending the Canadian small and medium business conference for three hours. One would hope. Detroit comes into the home game trailing the series 2-1, but 3 1/2 favorites thanks to their lanky, plastic-masked guard Rip Hamilton, who scored 24 points in Tuesday night’s victory. Bookmakers knocked off one point from the spread even though Spurs’ zesty Argentinian guard Manu Ginobili is slated to be healthy after injuring his thigh and being shut down in Game 3. Oddjack is not-so-boldly predicting that Ginobili’s return plus a rejuvenated Pistons will make this game a little more high scoring than the 171.5 over/under line. Be ready to cash in and buy that new weed wacker just in time for Father’s Day.

Although it may not be the snooze-fest everybody predicted, the NBA Finals series between the Detroit Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs is still much less interesting than your average lawnmower race. Okay, it’s not even close actually. The one major thing missing from this series is Detroit’s reputable pillow-smothering defense. Oddsmakers predict Detroit will find it(along with their pillows) and have lowered the total to 170 1/2 for tonight’s 9:30 match-up at The Palace at Auburn Hills. Make your own adjustments to your weekly gambling allowance, hold off on the Asian massage parlors, and throw some money at the Pistons tonight.

According to a story in gambling-loony magazine Covers, the San Antonio Spurs were originally 6 point favorites going into tonight’s 9 p.m. first game with the Detroit Pistons, but because a crapload of hungry bettors jumped on that early, the line has since moved to 7 and now settled at 6 1/2. Most of us who waited will now be stuck with 7 points and watching Nazr Mohammed’s foul shots at the end of the game determine whether or not our parents will be kicked out of their retirement community because of a late payment. Come on, Nazr. If you can’t do it for the city of San Antonio, do it for our old, lonely parents who will have to live in a sewer well if we don’t cover.
