Supreme Court Betting(Again): Is Alito A Lock?

READ MORE: Judge Samuel Alito, Supreme Court Betting, Tradesports

PH2005110201326.jpgDon’t tell the Democrats but by the latest Tradesports futures markets trading activity it appears that Judge Samuel Alito is pretty much a lock to win confirmation for the U.S. Supreme Court. Trading has stabilized in the last two days and is still sitting at a lofty 78-80 buy price for his confirmation. Even though there hasn’t been many negative reports about his confirmation, conservatives and centrists alike seem to be pleased with the choice and it seems like everyone in the Senate is wary of prolonging the process anymore than possible. So, buy now at 80 for a miniscule pay-off before this goes up anymore.

alito140.jpgJeez. It seems like we’ll have to go through this once a month from now on. Here we are again, regardless. Those ritalin pounding futures market traders over at Tradesports are once again throwing money at a confirmation for newly appointed Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito. Prices for Alito’s confirmation are hitting the 78-80 range. Second time is the charm? We’ll monitor this situation closely as these markets were once again correct in predicting that Harriet Miers would not be confirmed. Yeah. Funny how things work out that way, no?

Supreme Court Betting: Wipe Up The Falling Miers

PH2005062001163.jpgOh, the joys of predictive market betting. Scarecrow-faced Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is seemingly a lost cause to have her nomination confirmed after all this talk of presdiential kickbacks and Roe v. Wade-ness. Seems like all the Tradsports investors are bailing on her nomination contract at a rapid pace according to the latest reports:

“At approximately 8:30 EST this morning traders monitoring the Harriet Miers confirmation process began selling aggressively contracts betting against her confirmation - probability drops from 62 to 20 in heavy trading.”

That’s 42 points. This morning. What we can make out of all of this is that it appears most people who play the futures markets on Tradesports are stridently pro-choice. Which is not a surprise, really, given that they are actively also betting on the bird-flu and Hurricane Wilma as well. They’re tactful like that.

Harriet_Miers.jpgBusted. Those judicial high-rollers over at Tradesports are a little miffed at Presdient Bush’s selection of White House Counsel Harriet Miers to fill the seat on the Supreme Court vacated by Judge Sandra Day O’Connor last summer. Some were upset about the fact that TS pulled the contracts at 7:15 a.m. before the official White House announcement. Some are just upset because she’s a conservative woman, fearful of the always scary prospect that a hard-line agenda will be thrust upon the world and there will be no more Medicaid and abortions available, or something. Some are just pissed they didn’t short their contracts soon enough.

Supreme Court Betting: Stay Away From the Ladies?

READ MORE: Judge Edith Clement, Judge Edith Jones, Judge Janice Brown, Judge Michael Luttig, Judge Michael O'Connell, Supreme Court Betting, Tradesports

SUPREMECOURT2.jpgAs the nomination names are still being bounced around, Slate breaks down who they think the favorites are to fill the recently expired William Rehnquist’s seat on the Supreme Court. The article hints to the fact that even though there’s been a clammoring for a female justice, the popular names like judges Edith Clement, Edith Jones, and Janice Rogers Brown might be, um, not smart enough. Or at least not as smart as John Roberts:

None of the women whose names are being bandied about this week are known intellectual stars like Roberts, which makes it seem harder than it is for Bush both to satisfy his female base and appoint another world-class legal mind.

The article suggests that more than likely it’ll be either Judge Michael O’Connell or Judge Michael Luttig to win the vacancy. Judges Brown, Clement, and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales are still the most heavily traded on Tradesports.

Supreme Court Betting: Intraders All Over Clement

READ MORE: Judge Edith Joy Brown Clement, Supreme Court Betting

180px-Edith_Clement.jpgIn what is heavily relied upon as one of the most accurate market indicators, Intrade is showing that judge Edith Joy Brown Clement of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, well known in judicial circles as “the nicest piece of trim” serving on a high court bench, is getting the early angle on replacing the recently expired Chief Justice William Rehnquist as a Supreme Court justice. Clement has bounced another 23 points Clement was one of the Ediths heavily favored during the first nomination process—which eventually went to John Roberts—and, if the Intraders are once again working their voodoo magic, we should have another broad on the bench sometime soon. Another flurry of activity is once again been tossed at Attorney General Alberto Gonzales whose price has spiked 25 points today.

rehnquist.jpgWe’ve been waiting for this day for months(Months!) and it happens over the weekend when we’re not even paying attention because we were too busy drinking beer out of styrofoam coolies wading around in a kiddie pool in our sister’s backyard. However, in case you’ve also been living underground for the past few days, Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist has finally expired. He was 164.

Now, for those of you following our Supreme Court betting coverage the past couple months, you now know that this opens the door for many opportunities for punters/bettors to cash in on the next nominee. Here are the list of places trading and offering betting contracts on Supreme Court wagering. Will Gonzo finally get the nod? Will one of the snubbed Edith’s rejoin the fray?
