Supreme Court Betting: Bush Backdoors Us Again
READ MORE: Judge Edith Clement, Judge John G. Roberts, Odds, President Bush Supreme Court Nominee, Supreme Court
Wow. Just when you think you know the president, he does something crafty like nominate an appeals court judge that not many people had pegged as a real front-runner when all of that nonsense we-need-a-lady-on-the-high-court chatter started. And what’s Bush do? He pulls Appeals Court Judge John G. Roberts out of his pocket making some lucky last minute traders very rich and a legit 2/1 dog—which we thought were ridiculously short. Once again, Impaler, had the angle on the guy. The wrong angle, but he’s the only one we knew that even had him on the short-list since the Ediths started popping up:
Rounding out our short list of potential candidates is arch conservative DC US Court of Appeals Judge John Roberts. He has many things going for him and has been largely overlooked by the mainstream media due to the lack of controversy. But there is a reason his odds are 2/1 to win the job, most notably his Curt Schilling-esque approach to preparation and his experience at arguing dozens of cases in front of the Supreme Court. He would likely appeal to conservative lobby as well as the religious right. But we think that it will take a Rehnquist retirement before this Beltway judge is nominated for the position.
Schilling-esque indeed. Let’s put a bloody sock on Roberts. However there are still so many questions about the Supreme Court that we want to know: Will Rehnquist EVER retire? What about our Ediths? What about our Gonzo? So many questions as our betting team huddles and sulks, but vows to pursue the jurist game and fight another day…

Professional gambling dagger thrower Chris “The Impaler” Shepard has entered in with his Supreme Court betting picks:
“While he is preparing for a dogfight in the Senate, Bush is not apt to antagonize a political war with Democrats. It is likely, well more than likely, Dubya’s bud Gonzales will get the nod, but we are going to advise a play on Clement at 3/1.”
And for the next Chief Justice:
blockquote>”Fortunately for us, and unfortunately for the USA, we are going to bet on Thomas as next Supreme Court Justice at 2/1 odds.”

President Bush will announce the next Supreme Court nominee in prime time tonight, keeping bettors and jurist fans every where on the edge of their pulpits. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has fallen off the lead in Tradesports bidding, supplanted by the powerhouse fembot Judge Edith Brown Clement who is trading heavily at 71/79 on Tradesports right now. The rest of the action is on Judge Edith Hollan Jones who is also trading heavily at 17/21. The thought process is that one of the women will be nominated tonight, with Gonzales’ nomination being postponed until Chief Justice William Rehnquist either retires or disintegrates into a pile of dust.

Supreme Court Betting: Odds Shift, But Gonzo Still Holding

Current Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is still the overwhelming betting favorite to take over the dilapidated bench position vacated by former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Although Gonzalez has taken some heavy criticism recently despite his ‘moderation’, many in the betting community still feel he’s the black robe to beat, as 60% of the money seen by Sportsbook has been thrown at Gonzo. Gonzo’s odds have shifted from 6-5 to 5-8. But wait—is that Judge Edith Brown Clement’s music? Clement’s odds have doubled from 8-1 to 4-1 since July 5th. More than 40 per cent of total dollars wagered have been on Gonzales since the odds were first posted on July 5. Gonzalez is still challenged(not really) by Appellate Justice Edith Jones who is currently holding at 20.2 per cent of the betting pool.

Last week’s resignation by Sandra Day O’Connor from the Supreme Court threw many bettors under the short bus. Most were expecting 954-year-old Chief Justice William Rehnquist to step down last week, but he opted to stay on the bench until his bones disintegrate into a pile of dust. So, not good times for those tossing heavy action on Rehnquist’s resignation. However, there is a new flurry of betting activity on O’Connor’s potential replacement. Intraders are showing heavy activity on conservative judge US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who is the heavy favorite. Although only a few ticks behind in trading activity is Judge Emilio Garza, followed by Judge Janice Brown and Judge J. Michael Luttig. At Oddjack, we don’t believe chivalry is dead even though we haven’t opened a car door for a lady since our junior prom. With the controversy surrounding Gonzales, it may behoove bettors to play the gender game and put the money on Judge Janice Brown.
