Is there some Rampage left in Quinton Jackson?

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgAs a fan, I certainly hope so.

UFC 114 proved not to be the triumphant return to MMA that Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson had been hoping for, and having now missed out on his opportunity to get another crack at the light-heavyweight title, what comes next for the fighter?

Despite the loss to Rashad Evans, Rampage remains one of the UFC’s biggest draws. He’s got five fights left on his contract and with his upcoming role as B.A Baracus in the A-Team movie sure to raise his profile greatly amongst the casual audience; it’s likely that the promotion will be looking to get him back into action again in a high profile bout sooner rather than later. That appears to be something that also appeals to Rampage himself.

I’d like to get in there as soon as possible,” he said at the post-fight press conference. “This fight is going to haunt me for a long time.”

So who are the most likely options for him? Here’s four of the most appealing options for him.

First will be a fight with Forrest Griffin – prior to his fight at UFC 114 Rampage himself named three fighters he wanted to face, Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua, and Forrest Griffin. The first two options are out of the picture for the time being, but a rematch with Griffin could be a viable option.

The only problem is that Griffin is unlikely to be back until at least late September due to a shoulder injury, and the UFC may look to get Rampage back in the cage before then.

Second option for Rampage Jackson is to fight Lil Nog…

Who will win between Shogun Rua and Rashad Evans?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgOh yeah, that will be for the light heavyweight championship.

Now that we know Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will be defending his title against Rashad Evans, it’s as good a time as any to preview the impending light heavyweight title bout.

Although company president Dana White has confirmed the championship matchup, the organization has yet to announce when the 205-pounders will collide.

In Shogun Rua and Rashad Evans, you have two of the most explosive fighters at 205-pounds, but striking might not be what ultimately decides who exits the Octagon with gold around their waist.

If we were to compare the two from a pure striking perspective, the edge has to go to Shogun simply because he has more weapons in his arsenal. The former Chute Boxe fighter can be wild at times, however is able to put together lethal combinations of punches, kicks and knees that most can’t match.

Some might argue that Evans is the far more technical boxer – and rightfully so – but this is MMA and that shouldn’t be the deciding factor when they meet. Team Evans would also argue that Rashad’s kicking game could prove to be the difference, but again the nod still has to go to Rua after putting on a clinic against Lyoto Machida at UFC 104.

Like he did this past weekend against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 114, the glaring advantage Evans will look to capitalize on will be his explosive wrestling skills.

On the flipside, Rua would have no problems showcasing his…

Dana White thinks Anderson Silva is a Jackass

Monday, April 12th, 2010

And that’s merely days after he proclaimed Silva as the best pound for pound fighter in MMA today.

So why the change of heart? Well, after the mess Anderson Silva pulled last Saturday in UFC 112: Invincible, White was not pleased. Sure, Silva retained his belt in Abu Dhabi, but the way he spent most of the fight taunting his challenger Demian Maia and staying away from any kind of contact, watching the entire fiasco was like watching paint dry.

White said he was embarrassed by the way Anderson Silva defended his UFC middleweight title. And if you saw UFC 112 last weekend, you can’t really blame the disgruntled UFC president for feeling exactly that.

Silva dominated Demian Maia for the first two rounds before spending the next three backpedaling and posturing. Silva’s antics not only frustrated White but referee Dan Miragliotta as well. Miragliotta even warned Silva in the fifth round that if he keeps it up, he would deduct a point.

”This was a big event for us tonight, it was a really big moment. The whole last three weeks of my life have been leading to this event,” UFC president Dana White said right after the fight. ”The people in this country, including the media, have really gotten behind this thing with support like I have never seen anywhere. I’m really embarrassed.”

”He [Silva] feels that he doesn’t owe the fans an apology,” White…

Demian Maia challenges Anderson Silva in UFC 112: Invincible for the UFC Middleweight Championship Title

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

The Spider will be in action again.

For the first time in history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, MMA athletes will slug it out in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, on April 10 as UFC 112: Invincible features middleweight title holder Anderson ”The Spider” Silva facing off against Demian Maia.

Middleweight champion Anderson Silva is 25-4 with 19 wins by TKO. He is a striker and has a dangerous jiu jitsu game. He is arguably the best fighter on the planet and has the resume to prove it. Silva is a perfect 10-0 in the UFC, including a successful title defense over Thales Leites last April before again moving up to 205 pounds to beat Forrest Griffin in August.

His opponent, Demian Maia, replaced an injured Vitor Belfort to get a shot at Silva. Maia (12-1) returned to action back in UFC 109, rebounding from his first career loss, a 21-second knockout to Nate Marquardt in August, with a unanimous decision over Dan Miller, which improved his UFC record to 6-1, including a previous victory over top 185-pound contender Chael Sonnen.

A left eyelid cut prompted the Nevada State Athletic Commission to medically suspended Maia until August, but he was not suspended from training and will apparently be healed and cleared to fight Silva this Saturday.

”It’s always tough when a top fighter like Vitor Belfort has to pull out of a big title fight, but we have found a high quality replacement,” said UFC President Dana White in a press release.

Top contender Chael Sonnen was not available due to injuries sustained in his fight with Nate Marquardt, so Demian Maia stepped in to fight for the title. Maia is an Abu Dhabi grappling champion and a five-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion. He is 12-1 in MMA and is…

Matches to bet on in UFC 112: Invincible this Saturday

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

With two huge championship matches on the card featuring two of the very best stars in MMA today, you can’t afford to miss this one.

That’s right, UFC 112: Invincible will feature two of the best the sport of MMA has to offer as UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn defend their respective championship belts this Saturday in Abu Dhabi.

It doesn’t get any better than that and when it comes to who is the best pound for pound fighter in the UFC is concerned, nobody, AB-SO-LUTE-LY nobody, can compare to ”The Spider” Anderson Silva.

The Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist will defend his UFC middleweight title against Demian Maia in what should be one fantastic showdown. Silva has been plowing down on all comers for years. Can Maia be that one guy who can finally put an end to Silva’s reign as the king of the octagon?

Other matches to watch out for and of course, bet on, is the UFC lightweight championship match between the champion BJ Penn and his challenger, Frankie Edgar. This could be Penn’s last match as the UFC lightweight champion as he is heavily rumored to making a move to the welterweight division to have another crack at the title.

Ever since Penn dedicated himself to conditioning with…

UFC 109: Relentless gatecrashes Super Bowl Party

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Bettors take a trip inside the Octagon before they wet their pants watching the Super Bowl this Sunday.

And in case you didn’t get that, businessman extraordinaire and UFC President Dana White managed to squeeze his little UFC pay per view event right before Super Bowl XLIV.

You read it, before we get to see the Colts and the Saints play for the championship in Miami, Randy Couture and Mark Coleman, two Hall of Famers inside the Octagon, will headline UFC 109: Relentless as both try to make their way back to the title picture in the heavyweight division.

UFC 109 on Saturday, February 6 has 11 bouts on the card including the headliner that includes Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. There are five fights on the pay-per-view portion of the card and six preliminary bouts, two of which will be televised on Spike TV.

UFC 109 has a lot of big UFC odds favorites and that is somewhat unusual. Randy Couture is listed as -450 in UFC odds at SBG Global for his bout against Mark Coleman.

Not many people are giving Mark Coleman much of a chance. These two fighters were supposed to meet almost 12 years ago in UFC 17 but Couture was injured and pulled out. Couture is a five-time UFC champion and he has proven that he can still win big fights as he got a unanimous decision against Brandon Vera at…

Why Dan Henderson left the UFC to sign with Strikeforce

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgEasy. He hates Vitor Belfort.

Looks like we won’t get to play as Dan Henderson again in the coming UFC Undisputed 2010 eh? Yes, Hendo just inked a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce, leaving Dana White and the UFC for greener pastures.

But at 39 years old, how greener can these pastures still be for Dan Henderson? Really? As far as Henderson is concerned, it looks like he could care less, as long as he can stick it up to Dana White for giving Vitor Belfort a title shot.

Yes, apparently, that was the reason why Henderson left the UFC. After beating Michael Bisping to a bloody pulp in UFC 100, Henderson proved he is still one of the best fighters in the welterweight division. And yet, the UFC gave Vitor Belfort a title fight with welterweight champion Anderson Silva. That proved to be too much for Henderson’s ego to bear.

”Honestly, even if they had given the Silva fight to Nate Marquardt I would have been OK with that, because he’s pretty much in the same boat as I am,” Henderson said in an interview. ”But to give it to Vitor Belfort, a guy who hadn’t fought at that weight? And a guy I’d beaten?”

”I felt like there could have been a lot more respect for what I’d done,” he said. ”I just felt like they didn’t really care one way or the other whether I was there. I felt like they could have taken care of me a little better, but I have no hard feelings.”

As for his new bosses? Henderson is thrilled that somebody is still willing to take him in and give him the opportunity to salvage what’s left of his career.

”I’m very happy to be a part of Strikeforce and their partnership with…”

Can Shogun Rua stop Lyoto Machida in UFC 104?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

15-0 as a pro MMA fighter. 7-0 in the UFC. 1-0 in title fights.

That’s what Shogun Rua is going up against in UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California where he will challenge the undefeated Lyoto ”The Dragon” Machida for the UFC light heavyweight championship belt.

Can Mauricio Shogun Rua stop the unstoppable? Shogun, a former Pride FC champion, exploded into the UFC when he shocked the world by beating Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell. He’s looking to do the same, this time to win Machida’s light heavyweight title. However, that’s easier said than done.

shogun_ruaThe fact that Lyoto ”The Dragon” Machida is yet to lose a fight as a mixed martial artist is reason enough for Shogun to be disturbed. What’s even more disturbing is the fact that Machida hasn’t even lost a single round in any of his fights. There is no doubt that Machida has become the epitome of perfection inside the Octagon.

Sure, some can argue that Anderson Silva, the current UFC middleweight champion, is still the best pound for pound fighter inside the Octagon. He has yet to taste…

Can Forrest Griffin shock and beat Anderson Silva?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

After Griffin’s win over Rampage Jackson, betting against Forrest has been, well, complicated, to say the least.

Because we have no idea which version of Forrest Griffin will come out and fight at UFC 101: Declaration. We already know the dude can take the legs out of a powerhouse like Rampage, but can he do the same against a Spider?

It’ll be difficult, not because ”The Spider” Anderson Silva could carry four more limbs with him this weekend, but the fact that he is regarded as the best pound for pound fighter in the UFC. But if there’s a guy who cam come up with a shocker this Saturday, it would have to be Forrest.

Forrest Griffin was originally slated to Forrest Griffinface Thiago Silva at UFC 101. That changed in late April when UFC president Dana White confirmed that Griffin would instead accommodate Anderson Silva’s return to the light-heavyweight division.

Griffin is looking to rebound after a tough knockout loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 92 back in December of 2008. Griffin briefly describes the end of the three round fight in which he lost his UFC title.

”A couple minutes in, I found a rhythm and I felt good,” Forrest Griffin said. ”I’m pretty sure I kicked him in the body and I’m pretty sure he caught it and punched me in the face. I managed to get my composure and took some time to rest on my back. It just ended up being the end of my night.”

Griffin will face off against the man many consider as…

Is Anderson Silva really the best fighter in the UFC?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgI guess we’ll find out how good he really is this weekend.

The upcoming UFC 101: Declaration this Saturday is poised to be yet another exciting night of MMA action. One of the main fights of the card pits Anderson ”The Spider” Silva (24-4) against Forrest Griffin (16-5) in a much anticipated light heavyweight fight. Silva is widely regarded as the top pound for pound fighter in the UFC while Forrest is the former UFC light heavyweight champion and is known for being an incredibly tough fighter. A fight between these two should prove to be awesome.

What makes this fight so intriguing is that Anderson Silva is the current UFC middleweight champion fighting the heavier Forrest Griffin in the light heavyweight division. This fight will likely come down to whether the faster more overall skilled Silva can find success against the bigger and stronger Griffin. If Silva is really THAT good as people perceive him to be, then he shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever putting Griffin down right?

Anderson Silva has become Anderson Silvathe most feared fighter in the UFC. He currently has the longest winning streak in the history of the UFC with nine consecutive victories. Silva is also tied for the record of the most successful title defenses with his current streak of five. Along the way, he has beat some incredibly tough fighters such as Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, and Thales Leites.

Silva, who is a native of Brazil, is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who has made beating most of his opponents look easy. He is a feared striker and seems to have the ability to take control of every fight he is in.

This will not be the first time that Silva has moved…
