Who the heck can stop Brock Lesnar now?!?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Any time UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar fights, people watch.

Simply because he’s a freak of nature. Brock Lesnar possesses more size, power, and athleticism in one body than we’ve ever seen combined in MMA.

What’s more, he talks a lot of junk and has the ability to hype a fight, via his professional wrestling background. In fact, his pro and collegiate wrestling experiences have also brought a tremendous amount of fans to MMA, simply so they can continue to watch him.

All wondered aloud how Lesnar would do against a man with supposedly similar size and athleticism in Shane Carwin coming into their UFC 116 encounter. Beyond the fact that Lesnar was able to win, so the biggest question now is who can stop this guy?

Here’s a look at the top fighters in the division and where they might stack up.

Cain Velasquez. Fresh on everyone’s mind is the California native’s knockout over legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Velasquez continued his unbeaten streak and did so in impressive fashion. He is now 8-0 and has catapulted himself into the heavyweight title discussion.

Prior to UFC 110, president Dana White admitted that the winner between Nogueira and Velasquez would be considered as a possible opponent for Lesnar if they earned a convincing victory. Check. Now Velasquez will wait to see how the rest of the division shakes out, but his relentless style and punishing attack have not gone unnoticed by the UFC’s fight makers.

Frank Mir. Mir is the only man to defeat Lesnar in the UFC but…

Wanna earn more cash? Bet on UFC 109: Relentless too

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgBecause, hey, you can’t have too much going on if you’re a betting aficionado right? Unless of course, you’re losing.

Two UFC Hall of Famers collide in UFC 109: Relentless at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada a day before the rest of the world go ga-ga over the Super Bowl. And just because Super Bowl XLIV is that big of a game, the UFC is bringing out the big guns for Saturday night.

UFC fans have waited ten years for this match between Hall of Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman as they finally square off in a battle for the ages. Couture is a former three-time former heavyweight champion and a two-time light-heavyweight champion in the UFC, while Coleman was the first ever UFC heavyweight champion.

This fight was scheduled to go ahead 12 years ago in 1998, however Randy Couture had to withdraw due to injury. Since then both fighters have gone on to have impressive careers, Couture has a record of 17-10 whereas Mark Coleman, who spent most of his years fighting in Japan, has a record of 16-9.

The last two-years, Couture has fought some formidable opponents, such as the current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He lost both of these fights before winning his most recent fight against Brandon Vera.

Coleman has somewhat restarted his career within…

Can Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira beat Randy Couture?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgNogueira is trying to salvage what’s left of his career. Yes, just like Couture.

Taking place at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon is UFC 102. MMA fans are in for a treat when two MMA legends Randy ”The Natural” Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight for supremacy in the card’s main event.

Can Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira beat the returning future hall of famer? For one, Nogueira has similar boxing skills to Couture but what sets him apart from the former UFC heavyweight champion are his ‘opportunistic’ submission skills and his unbreakable spirit.

minotauro_nogueiraThe 33-year-old Brazilian is capable of doing what a lot of other Brazilian jiu jitsu fighters struggle with, working the ground game while being hit in the face. He’ll definitely need that if he wants to score a victory over a guy like Randy ”The Natural” Couture.

The problem is, being able, and willing, to take punishment does come at a price and Nogueira sometimes move like someone much older than his age.

The main argument in favor of Couture (16-9 record) is that in a three-round fight, it will be hard for Nogueira (31-5-1) to pull off a submission in time like he did back in the PRIDE days, which featured 10-minute first…

Can Randy Couture beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira?

Friday, August 28th, 2009

At his age, no one can really tell for sure.

But if this fight was set ten years ago, Couture should be able to make quick work of Minotauro. With that said, can Couture, now at 46 years of age, still win inside the Octagon when he comes face to face with Nogueira at UFC 102 this Saturday?

The pair was originally scheduled to meet in 2007, but the clash was scrapped when Randy ”the Natural” Couture quit the UFC over a dispute with management and the promotion’s failure to sign the no.1 ranked heavyweight in MMA, Fedor Emelianenko.

randy_coutureBut with Couture having since resolved his differences with Dana White’s MMA outfit, he will now face Antonio Rodrigo ”Minotauro” Nogueira inside the Octagon this weekend. Will this be a successful return to the UFC for the Natural or will this be a comeback Couture might just regret?

Couture is one of the most decorated MMA fighters of all time and has been the UFC’s heavyweight and light-heavyweight champion in his 12-year residency at the promotion. His key strengths over the years haven’t changed much; he still has phenomenal conditioning, crisp boxing and excellent Greco…

Can Randy Couture salvage his career in UFC 102?

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgWell, what’s left of it anyway.

In case you didn’t know, the card for UFC 102 on August 29 in Portland has already been announced with two former UFC heavyweight champions headlining the event. In case you didn’t get that, former heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will meet inside the Octagon. Whoever wins this one could be billed as the no.1 contender for Brock Lesnar’s title.

It’s only fitting for both Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to meet inside the Octagon now since the last time both fighters were inside the cage, they lost the championship belts once wrapped around their waists.

Randy CoutureBrock Lesnar won the UFC heavyweight title by beating Randy Couture before Frank Mir could beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to win the interim heavyweight title a month later. And since Lesnar already reunited the two heavyweight titles by beating the crap out of Mir in UFC 100, it’s only fitting for Dana White to go find himself a new no.1 contender for the now undisputed title.

Whoever wins this one could end that search.

”We’re extremely excited to be heading to Portland,” UFC President Dana White stated. ”When you get two mixed-martial-arts legends who are all heart and have wanted to fight each other for years, plus the fact that Randy has roots in Oregon, that tells me that not only will the crowd be electric, but it’s also a night where the fighters will be looking to cement their legacies.”

Yup, since UFC 102 will be in Portland, you just know…

MMA veteran Kim ”Kimo” Leopoldo is saddened by the news of his death (Probably because he’s still alive…)

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Now this is really fucked up.

In case you missed it, there were reports that claim 41-year-old MMA veteran Kim ”Kimo” Leopoldo passed away. The reports of the supposed death were posted on some MMA blogs and even mainstream media sources such as the Orange Country Register and the New York Daily News for crying out loud.

It turns out that Kimo is very much alive, contrary to the reports claiming that he died on Monday due to complications from a heart attack.

Kimo LeopoldoReports that confirm Kimo is indeed alive came from the dude’s publicist, Bob Trieger. The confirmation came shortly after Kimo’s lawyer, Victor E. Hobbs, pretty much said the same thing.

Kimo also appeared at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department not to scare the shit out of anybody but to confirm that he’s still breathing.

Kim ”Kimo” Leopoldo made his MMA debut 15 years ago at UFC 3 and became the first man to truly challenge the seemingly invincible Royce Gracie. Gracie, in fact, was so fatigued from the fight that he was unable to continue in the night’s tournament and to be helped out of the ring by family members.Leopoldo won six of his next seven bouts fighting primarily for the UFC and Pride FC.

He last fought in October 2006, when he suffered a…
