Can Maria Sharapova go deep for us at the US Open?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The seeds are in and just like every other Grand Slam tournament, we’re rooting for Maria Sharapova to avoid yet another early round exit.

That’s right, the seeds for the 2010 U.S. Open are in and Caroline Wozniacki will quickly get to prove whether she’s a deserving top seed or whether she’s Dinara Safina 2.0.

You see, the 20-year-old had the misfortune of seeing the name of a certain Maria Sharapova drawn to the top half of her quarter, setting up a possible fourth-round matchup and she knows that the entire male population, except maybe for her dad, will be rooting against her.

On the bottom, Li Na and 2004 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova are scheduled for a fourth-rounder of their own.

The bottom half of the left side is wide open for Jelena Jankovic. For what is anyone’s guess. No. 15-seed Yanina Wickmayer has been mired in a slump this summer, but a return to the semis at Flushing Meadows isn’t out of the question.

Wimbledon finalist Vera Zvonareva is perched at the bottom of the quarter and a potential crying jag in the form of young American Coco Vandeweghe sits in round two.

Melanie Oudin couldn’t have asked for a better draw. The struggling teen gets a qualifier in round one and then another winnable match against either a qualifier or No. 117 Sophie Ferguson in the second.

This is the most wide open of the quarters, which has to…

This bitch is ready for the 2010 US Open

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgThe 2010 US Open starts in late August and Serena Williams is considered one the favorites.

The 2010 US Open is still over a month away however betting lines are open in the women’s futures market already. Serena Williams is the clear favorite as the top ranked player in the world and holder of two current Grand Slam titles.

Kim Clijsters is the second favorite as the defending champion and a player who has won at Flushing Meadows in her last two visits to the tournament.

Venus Williams is 30 and her best tennis is behind her. Her best Slam has always been Wimbledon so her quarterfinal exit in that tournament this year should shatter the confidence of her punters. She hasn’t won the US Open since 2001 and she’s very unlikely to win it again so you might put her way out at about +2500 in terms of true odds.

Victoria Azarenka had a good showing at the other hard court Slam, the Australian Open, and she showed some life just prior to Wimbledon. But it’s possible that her loss to Serena Williams in the Aussie quarters was disturbing as she, Azarenka, appeared to have the match at hand up a set and two breaks before losing. She has descended down the rankings significantly since the end of the Aussie. She’s only made the 4th round once at Flushing Meadows and her results from 2010 have dipped compared to her 2009 results.

Regarding Samantha Stosur there is no reason to believe that she is anything except for a clay courter when it comes to Slams. Her best singles result outside of the French Open is a couple of 4th round Aussie appearances but at the US Open she has NEVER…

The Stars come out for the Wimbledon Championships

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

This is the 124th staging of the event, and the third Grand Slam tournament of the 2010 tennis calendar.

Yes, the 2010 Wimbledon Championship is finally here and as always, the brightest stars of the game came out to capture tennis’ brightest gem. Here’s the list of favorites in the women’s division for this year’s tourney.

Serena Williams is the defending champion for Wimbledon this year although winning last year surely was not easy. Williams saved match point in the semis against Elena Dementieva and then had a close set against Venus Williams to open the final.

Williams is considered the favorite despite subpar results over the clay court season as she has a pattern of success at Wimbledon even after lackluster clay court results. Last year she fell in the quarters of the French Open and then went on to win Wimbledon with a combination of strength and will power. Williams has won Wimbledon 3 times, she is currently ranked number 1, and she is also the current holder of the Australian Open title.

Venus Williams, on the other hand, has won Wimbledon 5 times and she is currently the second ranked player on the women’s tour. She has made 8 of the last 10 finals at the All England Club including 3 in a row and her form has improved this season.

In 2009 she went out in the second round of the…

2010 Australian Open opens up the Grand Slam Season (This means the NFL playoffs are almost over…)

Monday, January 11th, 2010

It’s back to the tennis courts.

The 2010 Australian Open promises to deliver all the action and excitement of Grand Slam tennis starting on January 18th before concluding with the finals on January 31st at the Melbourne Tennis Stadium in Flinders Park.

There are four major international Grand Slam tournaments held each year; the Australian Tennis Open, the French Tennis Open in Paris, Wimbledon in London and the US Tennis Open in New York. With the often extreme summer temperatures of Australia, the Australian Tennis Open is regarded as one of the most physically demanding for players.

The Australian Open is important in many ways, not least of which is because it is the first Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year. And all eyes will be on French phenom Rafael Nadal as he attempts to defend the very title he won here last year.

Another guy to look out for at the 2010 Australian Open is of course, Roger Federer, who will be looking to put his 2009 breakdown behind him. He will need to win in Melbourne if he wishes reassert his supremacy in men’s singles tennis.

Other notable players to watch out for include Novak Djokovic. After finishing last season with the Masters Cup title under his belt, Djokovic will come in the Australian Open brimming with confidence.

We also have Andy Murray, easily the most improved player of the season. He will be looking to prove that he’s capable of Grand Slam greatness as he comes in Melbourne looking for greater things.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams will enter the tournament as…

Forget the Williams Sisters, the 2009 U.S. Open just gave birth to a new star, 17-year-old Melanie Oudin.

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Serena Williams may have fired some ill-comments towards umpires but that’s not the story as far as women tennis in the U.S. is concerned.

The story in the 2009 U.S. Open has shifted from the Williams sisters to a virtual unknown named Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Georgia. The 70th-ranked Oudin has been handing out upsets to some of the sport’s biggest female stars, including Russian aces Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova. She also defeated 13th seed Nadia Petrova in three sets, making it crystal clear that this 17-year-old ain’t no pushover.

Sure, the magical ride for the young Melanie Oudin went to a crushing halt when she went up against no.9 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, losing 6-2, 6-2. But the fact of the matter is, Oudin has arrived into the scene of women’s tennis in style and everybody will recognize this young talent the next time she sets foot on a tennis court.

melanie_oudin”This has been a great experience for me. I had a great run here,” Oudin told the crowd of 23,881 during an on-court interview right after losing the match to Wozniacki, an honor usually reserved for the winner. ”I hope to come back next year and do even better.”

Doing better might just be a little harder for her though.

She upset four more established players, including the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova and Beijing Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva, to become the youngest quarter finalist at Flushing Meadows since Serena Williams in 1999.

Making the story even better is the fact that Oudin’s last three victories each came after dropping the first set. But her start against Wozniacki was quite inauspicious, she lost 14 of the first 18 points under the bright lights in the big city.

With ”BELIEVE” stamped in all capital letters on…

Beware of Big and Scary Serena Williams in New York

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Because that’s where the last Grand Slam of the tennis calendar will be played and unfortunately, Serena Williams is on it.

Unfortunate for tennis fans like me who’d rather watch those little skirts Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic will probably wear in the 2009 U.S. Open than another ass whooping we’ll probably see on some poor sap personally delivered by Serena Williams who has bigger arms than me.

And since Serena Williams is the defending champion of the U.S. Open, not to mention the fact that she’s still fresh from her huge win at Wimbledon, the younger Williams sister will definitely be the woman to beat.

serena_williamsSerena has this tendency to make her opponents look decidedly ordinary with her speed and strength, unless of course she’s playing against the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova who’ll probably make Serena look like a freaking gorilla compared to Sharapova’s long legs, smooth skin, perfect ass and those tight little skirts that give her one sweet looking camel t…

ANYWAY, Serena is the current holder of the U.S. Open singles title and her odds should shorten as summer tournaments heat up. She’s the best athlete on the women’s tour and she has a slight, but significant, age advantage on her older sister Venus Williams. It’s hard to imagine Serena not at least making the semis of the U.S. Open and despite being ranked no.2 in the world, she should be the odds-on favorite.

Then we have Dinara Safina. It is hard to find a serious…

Another All – Williams Wimbledon Final this 2009

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgUnfortunately for some of us, there won’t be skimpy skirts to stare at. Just a tennis match between two women who have bigger arms than me.

In case you didn’t get that, Venus and Serena Williams will once again play for a grand slam tennis title as the Williams sisters meet in the 2009 Wimbledon Championships final this Saturday.

Last year, the Williams sisters faced off in the Wimbledon final for the third time overall and the first time since 2003, as Venus Williams scored her first Wimbledon final win over Serena Williams to claim her fifth Wimbledon singles title.

Venus Williams and Serena WilliamsAs expected, this year’s Wimbledon futures odds have the Williams sisters as the top two favorites to win, but before the two punched their ticket to the championship game, there were several players in the draw that could’ve prevented a Williams’ sister from winning Wimbledon for the eighth time in 10 years.

One of which is Dinara Safina. Safina was seeded no.1 this year, but thanks to one of the fastest semifinal matches in Wimbledon history, the no.1 seed took an abrupt exit after Venus Williams needed only 51 minutes towards a 6-1, 6-0 win.

There’s something about Wimbledon that always brings…

The Williams Sisters, that’s Serena Williams and Venus Williams, are in the 2009 Wimbledon Quarter Finals

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Yes, they’re still around.

With the hot and sexy Maria Sharapova out followed by Ana Ivanovic tapping out of center court because of an injury, having the Williams sisters STILL around is really one big swift kick to the balls.

In case you didn’t get that, I don’t really expect you to. What I know is that the two huge reasons why the male population watch tennis is now long gone and there isn’t really nothing to look forward to in the 2009 Wimbledon Championships anymore but for it to be over, and soon.

For the rest of you, well, both Venus and Serena Williams are still around, each hoping for a possible Williams sisters face-off in the semifinals. Of course, they have to get rid of their respective quarterfinals matches first.

Venus and Serena WilliamsFirst, Serena. The younger Williams will look for revenge as she faces off with the same beyatch who kicked her ass in the final of last April’s Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Victoria Azarenka. Serena knows that Azarenka is a good player and if there was one player with everything to lose, it would have to be her.

”She’s obviously a good player, and she’s really young,” said Serena Williams, a winner in 56 minutes over another hottie, Daniela Hantuchova in Monday’s fourth round. ”She has nothing to lose. It will be a really good match.”

Older sister Venus Williams, on the other hand, was…

Venus and Serena Williams in 2008 Wimbledon Final

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

From what should look like one epic battle from Jurassic Park, the Williams sisters will relive their sibling rivalry this Saturday.

And for all ya’ll calling me a racist already after reading that first sentence, you’re a jackass. I have nothing against African Americans, it just so happen that the Williams sisters ain’t my type. And as much as I would love to see Maria Sharapova play in the final match of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships, all I could do now is accept the fact that the Williams sisters were simply better at this point of the year.

You read it right, Venus and Serena Williams made it this far to earn a shot at each other hoping to win the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships, as well as the title ”daddy’s little girl” probably, although both of them are absolutely NOT, in any way, ”LITTLE.”

Venus knows her sister will be up to the challenge come Saturday. Serena Williams, after disposing China’s Zheng Jie, 6-2 7-6 (7/5) definitely has what it takes to beat the four-time Wimbledon champion.

”At this point our main focus was obviously both of us getting to the final. Then from there it’s every Williams for themselves,” Venus Williams said.

”Our goal is just to be healthy. I think if we can be healthy, then we can do well and continue to climb the rankings. Of course we believe we can be on top, but we just have to keep our…”

Who will advance to the 2008 Wimbledon Women’s Final? (One thing’s for sure, it won’t be Sharapova…)

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

We’ll find out soon enough.

Because we finally have the four remaining semi-finalists in the 2008 Wimbledon Championships women’s division. The two Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, are hoping to face each other in the championship match but before they do that, they have to beat Elena Dementieva and Jie Zheng in the semi-finals first respectively.

That’s right, we’re in the verge of another ”Williams final” at the 2008 All England Lawn Tennis Championships. Venus Williams will face Elena Dementieva while sister Serena has Jie Zheng. On paper, I guess a ”Williams final” is imminent eh? How did these four semi-finalists got here? Read on.

Venus Williams reached the Serena Williams and Venus Williamssemi-finals for the seventh time in the last nine years with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand. Venus, who has won all seven of her career meetings with Tanasugarn, fired eight aces but committed 22 unforced errors and three double faults.

The American still managed to win after suffering a hamstring injury late in the match, limping noticeably down the stretch. ”It feels a little bit tight,” the 28-year-old Venus Williams said. ”I’ll be fine. I’m a big girl. I can deal with it.”

Looking to take advantage of that injury in the semi-finals is Elena Dementieva. She earned the ticket to face Venus after she salvaged a victory against Nadia Petrova, coming up with a 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3 win to reach her very first Wimbledon semifinal. Dementieva cruised to a 5-1 lead in the second set before suffering from her errors and double faults that…
