Can Mark Webber and Red Bull keep their lead in F1?

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I’m rooting for exactly that.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber blitzed to victory at a nail-biting finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix to take a four point lead in the driver’s championship heading to the mid season break of the 2010 F1 season. The Aussie took over from Lewis Hamilton after dominating Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest.

Sebastian Vettel, the guy who took the wings of Mark Webber, much to his dismay of course, maintained an early lead from pole position. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, was providing a tough challenge for Webber.

A few laps after the Australian took advantage of Vettel’s drive through penalty and held out for a pit stop as he built a lead over Alonso. The strategy ultimately paid dividends with the 33-year-old claiming the first place in Hungary. He is now atop the standings in the driver’s seat.

Alonso’s ferocious pursuit earned him second place, while Vettel finished third. Russian Vitaly Petrov finished 5th just behind Ferrari’s Felipe Massa – the best achievement for the Renault driver this season.

“It was a bit of a gift, but I’ve not had many of them, so I’ll take it. It’s an incredible day for us. It’s nice to have more points than anybody else, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves as there are some big events coming up,” Webber said.

Just 20 points now separate the top five drivers…

Can Ferrari salvage their 2010 F1 Season?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

The Italians are not happy these days.

Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali has admitted that his team are going to have to dig deep to recover from their recent trials and troubles in the 2010 F1 season.

Though he is optimistic that they can turn things around. The Maranello squad have scored just 19 points from the last three races and are currently third in the constructors’ standings, trailing championship leaders McLaren by 113 points.

Despite the F10’s improving pace, Ferrari left Silverstone empty handed, after a problematic start and drive-through penalty for Fernando Alonso and tyre issues for Felipe Massa saw the duo finish in 14th and 15th respectively. Speaking during a conference at the factory, Domenicali urged the team to stay positive and work even harder.

We are angry that we did not get the results which we were capable of delivering, but this anger must be turned into a positive force,” he said. “We must remain rational. We must not let ourselves be discouraged nor frustrated. We just have to knuckle down and continue with the development of the car, working calmly, with great concentration and determination. Then, the results will come.”

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, who was also in attendance, is equally keen for the squad to put recent problems behind them and focus on forthcoming races.

There is no point in crying about it and I want the team to tackle the…”

F1 returns to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Formula one race cars are heading towards the Canadian Grand Prix.

After the thrills and spills at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix followed by the frustration of the Turkish Grand Prix, circuit Gilles Villeneuve will host the upcoming race, for which the stands have been stretched out in Montreal to embrace the cars and drivers on the 16th of June, 2010. Yep, we’ll have the Canadian Grand Prix this 2010 F1 season.

No race was scheduled for the year 2009; however, a contract was signed for the races to be held from 2010-2014. As the countdown begins with the memories from the Turkish Grand Prix fresh in the minds of many, the Canadian Grand Prix is the one to watch out for.

Back in 2008, BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix. Nick Heidfeld finished second in a BMW Sauber car, with David Coulthard third in a Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton, who started from pole position, failed to finish the race, retiring on lap 19 after crashing into the back of Kimi Räikkönen’s Ferrari car in the pit lane. It turned out to be BMW Sauber’s only win and 1-2 finish, as they pulled out of F1 at the end of the 2009 season.

The current driver’s world championship standings leader is Mark Webber of Red Bull with 93 points as he has kept his place at the head of the Formula One standings after finishing in third place in the Turkish Grand Prix behind the McLaren pair of Jenson Button 88 points and Lewis Hamilton with 84 points.

Webber looked to be headed for this third straight win at Istanbul Park until a collision with Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel which caused him to pit for a new nose cone. Vettel went off and did not finish, meaning he has slipped to fourth in a close title race which is dominated by Red Bull and McLaren after seven rounds.

Team Boss Martin Whitemarsh believes McLaren has yet to live up to its full potential this 2010 F1 Season

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Of course he’s saying that.

With his McLaren team still 10 points behind Ferrari for the constructors championship this 2010 F1 season, team boss Martin Whitemarsh refuses to even think that McLaren can’t get past their Italian rivals this year.

So far, McLaren’s campaign will be noted more for their mistakes than their wins. Take for example the debacle they had in Australia where Lewis Hamilton could’ve finished at the podium if it wasn’t for the poor tire strategy call they made.

At the following race in Malaysia, McLaren once again made a huge boo boo when they sent their drivers out late in qualifying, relegating both Hamilton and defending champion Jenson Button, to the back of the starting grid.

Still, thanks to Hamilton and Button still managing to salvage some championship points, McLaren is still second to Ferrari in the race for the constructors championship while their main man, Button, is just four points behind points leader Felipe Massa for the drivers championship.

That’s probably why Whitemarsh remains confident.

”By our own very high standards, we’ve not fully met our very high expectations in the first three races, despite having what we feel is the necessary race pace to compete at the front and despite having won the Australian Grand Prix,” said team boss Whitmarsh.

”That might sound overly self-critical, given that we are…”

How did Michael Schumacher do in his return to F1?

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Not bad, but probably not good enough to remind people that he was the same guy who dominated this sport for years.

The 2010 F1 season finally kicked off and the sport definitely has a lot of things going for it this year. You have a new phenom in Sebastian Vettel trying to take over the sport, you have a former double world champion in Fernando Alonso who was finally awarded with the machine that could get him back on top of Formula One, and then you have the returning Michael Schumacher who is out to prove how good he can still be at 41.

So how did Michael Schumacher’s first race back to Formula One go? Well, it wasn’t the typical Schumacher dominance we’ve been accustomed to in the past but still, a 6th place finish at 41 years old isn’t bad, not bad at all.

That’s right, Michael Schumacher, starting 7th in the grid, finished 6th to kick off the season in Bahrain. That’s a good start if you ask me and if Schumi at 41 years old can still keep them good finishes coming for his new teammates from Mercedes GP, then we definitely have one intriguing season ahead for sure.

Schumi spoke a day after the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix and he was understandably happy about the way his first race back turned out.

”Still today, a day after my comeback race, I feel extremely well,” Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher told his official website. ”With regards to the fitness, this race was not at all difficult for me and I was not exhausted at all. This is partly due to…”

Fernando Alonso signs three-year deal with Ferrari

Monday, January 4th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgLooks like Ferrari is serious about dominating the field next season.

In case you haven’t been watching the 2009 F1 season, to say that it hasn’t been Ferrari’s year could be an understatement.

Next season, it looks like Ferrari intends to make a huge bid as far as the 2010 title is concerned because they just signed former double world champion Fernando Alonso to a three-year deal.

That’s right, Fernando Alonso, for the second time in his career, is leaving Renault to sign with another team, this time with Ferrari. Just a few years ago, he left Renault to sign with McLaren. The honeymoon between him and McLaren ended when a young Lewis Hamilton entered the picture. Luckily, Renault was there to take Alonso back, only for him to leave the team again to sign with Ferrari.

Alonso signing with Ferrari means he’ll be teammates with his rival Felipe Massa. That also means Kimi Raikkonen is leaving the team but I reckon with Alonso’s skill set, the Italians won’t miss the Finn one bit.

”We are very proud to welcome to our team another winning driver, who has demonstrated his amazing talent by winning two world championships in his career to date,” said Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali.

”Of course, we wish to thank Kimi for everything he has done during his time with Ferrari.”

”In his first year with us he managed to win the…”

Raikkonen will return to McLaren after the F1 Season

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYou read it, the fiery Finn is coming back to McLaren, looking to save the team from the debacle they’ve been having this year.

Looks like McLaren – Mercedes is already making some moves to rectify the pathetic campaign they’ve been having this 2009 F1 season. In case you haven’t been paying attention, McLaren’s defending champion, Lewis Hamilton, has only won a couple of races this season and the team in general hasn’t been faring well too, dropping to fourth in the constructors championship standings.

With Lewis Hamilton struggling this year, McLaren has to come up with an insurance policy for next year’s run and with the team signing a former world champion like Kimi Raikkonen, they may have found exactly that.

kimi_raikkonenKimi Raikkonen raced for McLaren a few years ago so there won’t be any adjustments as far as the Finn is concerned. Back in 2007, Kimi Raikkonen left McLaren for Ferrari in a £25 million a year deal that made him the highest paid driver on the grid.

He rewarded them by winning the world championship in his debut campaign but his position came under threat when Fernando Alonso, Renault’s double world champion, was rumored last year to join Ferrari and replace him.

The major problem has been Raikkonen’s $50 million (£31 million) a year contract with…

Felipe Massa returns for 2009 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Since he’s Brazilian, surely you didn’t expect him to miss this year’s race in his home country right?

You read it, the 2009 F1 season continues this week in Brazil where Felipe Massa will make his return after severely injuring his eye back in the horrific freak accident in Hungary. Yes, he’s back. But he won’t be where you’d normally expect him to be.

You see, Felipe Massa will indeed be back in the 2009 F1 Brazilian Grand Prix but he won’t be racing for Ferrari. Instead, he’ll be there as a special guest to wave the checkered flag in what should be an emotional homecoming for Brazil’s hometown hero.

Felipe Massa, who has felipe_massanot ruled out the prospect of driving in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on November 1, will return to his home country Brazil for the penultimate round on the calendar.

Massa will become the third celebrity to wave the checkered flag at Interlagos in the past eight years, following in the footsteps of Pele and model Gisele Bundchen. Hopefully, Massa will at least have his eyes on the conclusion of what could be the title decider, unlike Pele, who famously failed to carry out his duty.

The world’s most famous footballer was looking the other way when…

Alonso looks to win the F1 Singapore Grand Prix Again

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgBut who will crash his car on purpose for Alonso to take the checkered flag this time?

Ah yes, conspiracies and controversies have not been new to the 2009 F1 season. And in case you didn’t know, the entire Renault F1 team is in the middle of the latest one coming to this weekend’s Singapore GP.

Yup, the 2009 F1 Singapore Grand Prix is this weekend and Fernando Alonso will try to defend the title he earned last year. After all, the Singapore GP is the ONLY race in the F1 racing calendar held at nighttime and since the inaugural race last season, the event has become one of those races you just have to win if you’re a Formula One driver.

However, there seems to be a problem about the way Fernando Alonso won the race in Singapore last year. It turns out that team Renault ordered Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash his car on fernando_alonsopurpose to give Alonso an unfair advantage.

You see, Nelson Piquet Jr. crashing his Renault last year meant that Alonso had taken his first pit stop before the safety car was deployed. Thanks to Flavio Briatore’s ingenuity, the plan worked perfectly and Alonso ended up with the win on Singapore’s inaugural night race.

Fernando Alonso, as of this writing, still claims he was on the dark about the devious plan to give him the edge through the safety car. As far as he’s concerned, he doesn’t know squat about the incident.

Alonso is confident that he’ll be able to win again in Singapore, with or without…

Ecclestone can’t save Renault and Flavio Briatore

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYou read it, and since they were friends before the race fixing scandal in Singapore broke out, you can bet your ass they ain’t friends no more.

It turns out that Bernie Ecclestone’s friendship with Flavio Briatore has suffered in the wake of the race-fixing scandal that transpired last year in Singapore. This is definitely something any F1 team can’t have coming to the 2009 F1 Singapore Grand Prix this Sunday but as far as Renault is concerned, they can’t do a damn thing about it.

In case you didn’t know, Flavio Briatore was handed a lifetime ban from all FIA – sanctioned events this 2009 F1 season for his role in the conspiracy which resulted to Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashing his car to virtually hand Fernando Alonso the win in Singapore last year.

bernie_ecclestoneAnd while Bernie Ecclestone felt the lifetime ban on Briatore was a tad overkill, he was still a part of the 26-man World Motor Sport Council that slapped the disgruntled Renault boss with the punishment.

Flavio Briatore felt that Ecclestone should’ve been more lenient considering that they were buddies. Unfortunately, Ecclestone felt he just couldn’t defend Briatore.

”He’s not talking to me, I don’t know. He thinks I should have defended him, which I couldn’t,” Bernie Ecclestone said.

”If you look at it sensibly, the people at the top…”
