The New York Mets are not the worst team in baseball.
They are not even the most incompetently run franchise in their own division. Yet, their campaign this 2009 MLB baseball season may have forever redefined the concept of losing.
Nothing has gone right for the poor New York Mets in this calendar year. From the ownership down to the bat boys, the entire organization has been beset by financial issues, management missteps, injuries, errors, poor timing, and just plain bad luck. Every week seemed to bring a new crisis or terrible disaster and through it all, they constantly found inventive and entertaining ways to squander victory. And there’s still a month left!
Let’s take a look at this disgruntled franchise on what has gone wrong this year. Actually, it started in the
offseason when the Mets first gave Francisco Rodriguez a three year, $37 million contract. This was the biggest buyers market in years and no other big market teams were in the mix for a closer, and yet they still gave him premium money. Frankie finishes 55 games in 2010, 100 games between 2010 and 2011, and is deemed healthy after the 2011 season, his fourth year option vests for $17.5 million. The bad news is, Frankie has been declining the past four seasons and the decline has continued this season.
Then the injuries.
The first set of injuries came within a few days of each other in May. Carlos Delgado got injured in a game against the Pirates on May 10th, yet doesn’t go on the disabled list until May 16th, despite requiring hip surgery. Jose Reyes injures his calf in a game against the Braves on May 13th but was placed on the disabled list on the 26th, almost two weeks after the initial injury. Reyes has not been seen since, and apparently everybody thinks he’s a wuss for making sure he is completely healthy before returning to the field.
The Mets lost their last remaining star when David Wright was…

We can now move on and live the rest of our lives without ever mentioning the name, Barry Bonds right?
Um… NOT QUITE. Now that Barry Bonds hit career home run No.756 to overtake Hank Aaron for the MLB all-time home run record, it seems every single thing about the sport will STILL be all about the guy until somebody hits 757. And I reckon it won’t matter if the guy who’ll pass Bonds in the future uses steroids or not too.
When Hank Aaron was the all-time home run leader in MLB baseball, his 755 home runs sure looked safe as it took 26 long years before anybody even came close to it.
Hell, the No.2 all-time home run leader then was 40-year-old Willie McCovey with 465 home runs and the guy will probably need the fountain of youth just to get to No.500.
Babe Ruth had his own, era of dominance, if you will, as it took almost 40 years before Aaron became the black dude every single Babe Ruth Caucasian fan hated. Oh yeah, in case you didn’t know, Hank Aaron became the devil as far as white America is concerned. After all, Babe Ruth then was indeed, god-like.
Now that the MLB all-time home run record solely belongs to the steroid-powered arms of Barry Bonds, the search for…

You haven’t forgotten all about Tom Glavine now are you?
After San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds and New York Yankees fan favorite Alex Rodriguez each had a milestone of their own last Saturday, Tom Glavine apparently wants some attention too as he went on to have the 300th win of his career.
Yep, New York Mets pitcher Tom Glavine got his 300th career win after leading the Mets to an 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Tom Glavine was playing against the Cubs as if he was ten years younger, mixing up his pitches and fooling every single Cubs slugger who set foot on the plate.
”If I was the last one, I guess it would be pretty cool to be the last one to do something in the game,” Tom Glavine said.
”It wasn’t a dazzling performance in terms of striking people out. It was an exercise in hitting my spots and changing speeds and letting the guys behind me do their work,” Glavine added, looking quite relieved after the game.
”I think the feeling right now is probably relief,” Glavine said. ”At some point in time, I don’t know when, the historic side of it will sink in. I know the company I’m in, and I’m as proud as can be to be in that company.”
Tom Glavine, despite not finishing the game after leaving the mound after…

Yep, it seems these guys had one special Saturday night to say the least eh?
In case you missed it, two of MLB baseball’s hottest sluggers reached a couple of milestones last Saturday as Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs while Barry Bonds has finally tied Hank Aaron for the all-time MLB home run record after hitting No.755.
So which one was better last weekend? Well, one would normally say that the 755th home run was of course, better than No.500 and he or she can probably give you 255 reasons why.
Of course, being the deviant writer that I am, I see different but first, let’s take a look at the milestones reached over the weekend in the still ongoing 2007 MLB baseball season shall we?
Yep, San Francisco Giants superstar Barry Bonds finally hit the 755th home run of his career, joining Hank Aaron as MLB baseball’s all-time home run leader.
After weeks and weeks of anticipation, and a couple more weeks after that, Barry Bonds hit No.755 off San Diego Padres pitcher Clay Hensley, the first home run Bonds hit off him. For what it’s worth, Hensley also had a milestone for himself…

Apparently, the New York Yankees have now lost so much that A-Rod is just sick and tired of baseball.
Either that or he’s just nursing a strained hamstring. Yep, Alex Rodriguez, probably the leading candidate for MVP this season (provided the Yankees get it going again before it’s too late…) could miss the 78th Midsummer Classic in MLB baseball to rest his injured hamstring.
The New York Yankees superstar STILL leads the league in homeruns with 28 baseballs out of the ballpark and 80 RBIs. Understandably, A-Rod led the voting for the 2007 MLB All-Star game in San Francisco, California, edging hometown hero Barry Bonds with 3.89 million votes.
However, after injuring his left hamstring after tripping over Minnesota Twins baseman Justin Morneau Monday, he could very well tell the 3.89 million fans who voted for him to piss off.
”I told the guys I’ll let them know Saturday. But if I feel like this, probably not,” Alex Rodriguez said. The third baseman added he would still go to the 2007 MLB All-Star Game even if he decides not to play. Well, if he’s not playing, why bother going to the damn thing anyway?
To say that the New York Yankees are just not…

Yep, just when I thought the New York Yankees are finally back, the Colorado Rockies sent them back to the cellar.
The New York Yankees, after all that shit about them closing in on the AL East division leaders, Boston Red Sox, were SWEPT by the Colorado Rockies in their three-game season series to drop ‘em flat on their asses at the .500 border.
After winning nine games in a row, the New York Yankees lost three straight games to the Rockies to bring their record to 35-35, barely holding on above .500 and putting them about 11 games behind their rivals from Boston. Yep, Roger Clemens is probably wishing it was early June again.
Roger Clemens tried to save the
New York Yankees from the humiliating sweep in Denver, Colorado. But with a Rockies fan holding up a sign chiding the Yankees for paying ”$28 million for a dinosaur,” the Rocket simply lost his game. If there’s any of it left anyway.
Over the course of a remarkable 24-year MLB baseball career, it has not been wise to bet against the Rocket, Roger Clemens. Heck, the guy has more wins than any other active pitcher. Make that any other LIVING one. Well, all that was thrown out the window when the Colorado Rockies chased the Rocket in the 5th inning to win their third contest with…

No no no, the Mexican wasn’t caught trying to cross some border…
Mexican league scoring champion Juan Carlos Cacho was surprisingly dropped from the national team roster for the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Yep, I don’t understand that and with them being Mexicans, I don’t expect to anytime soon.
Juan Carlos Cacho had 11 goals to help Pachuca win the Clausura title. He shares the Mexican league scoring title with Omar Bravo of Chivas. Despite Cacho’s success on the field for Pachuca, national team manager Hugo Sanchez selected his name as one of five he will cut from his preliminary roster.
Joining Juan Carlos Cacho in
Sanchez’ cut list is Cacho’s Pachuca teammate Jaime Correa, Gonzalo Pineda and Luis Michel of Chivas, and Israel Castro of Pumas.
Bravo will lead the offense to the United States along with Adolfo ”Bofo” Bautista – Bravo’s teammate at Chivas, America’s Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Francisco Fonseca from Tigres and Jared Borgetti from Cruz Azul.
Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez was included on the roster and would join the team at the semifinal stage after the conclusion of the 2007 Spanish football season.
Hugo Sanchez’ roster will look like this.
Goalkeepers: Oswaldo Sanchez (Santos), Guillermo Ochoa (America) y Jose Corona (Tecos).
Defenders: Jonny Magallon (Guadalajara), Francisco Rodriguez…

The only thing unpredictable about MLB Baseball is for how long can it bore you. Well, as far as I’m concerned anyway.
MLB Baseball DOESN’T HAVE a salary cap. That means, big budget MLB Baseball teams like, the New York Yankees of course, get all the best talents, leaving the stage of lopsided payrolls a normal thing.
Yep, MLB Baseball is indeed the poster boy for predictability in professional sports.
And it’s true that the New York Yankees and a handful of other major-market clubs trounce the small markets in terms of money. The Yankees’ $198 million payroll this season is 13.2 times that of the Florida Marlins’ roughly $15 million budget.
Four other clubs, including the defending MLB Baseball World Series champions, Chicago White Sox, also have payrolls of more than $100 million this year, and all are based in the country’s three largest cities.
However, as predictable as MLB Baseball is, how come it has four different…

Why is Washington Nationals’ closer Chad Cordero on top in the Eric Karabell’s Insider "Closer Report"? And why is the Oakland A’s Huston Street so low? We’ll never understand the goofy math this guy uses, but we certainly cannot advocate putting Cordero up top, if only for the fact that he joins the ranks of Florida Marlins’ outfielder Juan Pierre and Cleveland Indians’ pitcher C.C. Sabathia in the retard hat-wearing club. But, then again, with so many top tier closers(K-Rod, Hermanson, Rivera, et al) drinking the poop shake in the last week, maybe it makes sense. Find out the rest of Karabell’s rankings after the jump. Maybe. (Rankings based on overall 5×5 value combined with projected future performance.
