St Louis Rams interested in Terrell Owens?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgLooks like T.O. might finally have a home.

You read it, the St. Louis Rams have intensified discussions in hopes of signing free agent Terrell Owens for the coming 2010 NFL football season, according to sources close to the player and team.

The Rams asked Terrell Owens through his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, if he would consider a serious contract proposal, even though they are not considered a playoff contender. Rosenhaus told the team Owens would definitely consider it, sources said. A high-ranking Rams official said a formal offer for Owens could come soon.

The St. Louis Rams believe Owens would take heat off their young wide receiver corps that includes Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson and rookie Mardy Gilyard, as well as loosen up opposing defenses from focusing on running back Steven Jackson.

The Cincinnati Bengals, as reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, are also engaged in talks with Owens. The Bengals signed free-agent receiver Antonio Bryant during the offseason but Bryant has struggled so far. According to a team source, that has motivated the Bengals to take another look at Owens.

One source said the Rams have gotten very aggressive in their pursuit of Owens, however, the Bengals still have given no indication they’re ready to offer a contract. They want to get a good look at their young wide receivers and have five preseason games to do it. They need some of those guys to play special teams.

Who will take a chance on Terrell Owens?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Yep, nobody has… YET.

For the second-consecutive year, Terrell Owens, the notorious wide receiver, is on the market as he remains unsigned with only a couple of months before the 2010 NFL football season begins but according to agent Drew Rosenhaus that will definitely change.

Rosenhaus said that Terrell Owens, who played for the Buffalo Bills last season, will have a new team “within the next few weeks.”

He added that five teams were interested in Owens. However, the San Diego Chargers aren’t one of them, despite Vincent Jackson being suspended three games by the NFL and threatening to hold out over his contact situation. “We’re all set right now with our receivers,” general manager A.J. Smith said in an interview.

The Seattle Seahawks are also out of the picture. “No, you know, I go way back with T.O.,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “I was there [as an assistant coach] when he showed up with the 49ers when he was a rookie and nobody knew he had any initials or anything. And I really liked Terrell. But we won’t be able to do that this time around. I think at our time in our program development, we’re going to continue to work with the guys that we’ve got and go in a different direction than that. We’re really looking to get the young guys going as much as we can.”

Owens said recently that he believed teams are swayed by the perception he’s a troublemaker. It’s a perception he believes he disproved with his agreeable behavior in Buffalo during a disappointing season in 2009.

“There were a number of times where prior I probably would…”

Trouble between the Patriots and Tom Brady?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

For the sake of the sports fans in Boston, let’s hope not.

There seems to be a problem in the contract negotiations between the New England Patriots and superstar QB Tom Brady coming to the 2010 NFL football season.

Yep, rumors say that there is a growing sense of disconnection between the New England Patriots and Tom Brady’s representatives as the sides try to strike out a deal to keep the three-time Super Bowl winner in New England.

The deal Tom Brady has, like that of four-time MVP and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, is set to expire at the end of the 2010 season. He declined comment for the story, but the reports said that there has not been substantial talks between the sides on a new contract.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said last week that the team want Brady “to be our quarterback for a long time into the future.” He had said in March that Patriots would not allow Brady to leave via free agency.

But after watching LeBron James betray the city of Cleveland on national TV, nothing is really certain until the guy in question signs on that dotted line.

Brady’s current deal was worth $60 million when he signed it in 2005. A new deal would likely thrust him into the stratosphere of the highest-paid players in the NFL.

But the negotiations for Manning’s contract with the Colts and…

Has Brett Favre decided on coming back yet?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Brett Favre is a man stuck in limbo, he just can’t make up his mind to retire from professional football or not.

In case you haven’t heard, Brett Favre recently said that he can still play at a “high level” if he returns to the Minnesota Vikings for a 20th NFL season. Favre has not yet said if he plans to play, but he’s not sounding like a retired quarterback.

You see, Brett Favre told the Sun Herald on the Mississippi newspaper’s website he would “love to go beat the Saints” in the season opener Sept. 9. New Orleans beat Minnesota in the NFC championship game in January.

If my body was a wreck, the decision would be made,” Favre said. “But that is not the case. I know the Vikings want to know.

Hell, I want to know. But I am not going to press it. If I do not play, it does not cost the Vikings a dime. They keep the $13 million. I know they have confidence in the players they have. They had a chance to draft Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen in the first round, but they didn’t want one.”

Favre said his healing on schedule from surgery on his left ankle, and cycling is part of his rehab.

Agent Bus Cook was asked if the 40-year-old Favre has made a decision on playing. His reply? “Nope.” The Vikings declined comment.

Teams continue to prepare for the 2010 NFL Season

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgChemistry, perhaps that’s the key to winning a Super Bowl.

Or is it defense? A hot shot quarterback with reliable receivers? The wildcat? Those are just some of the questions NFL teams are trying to answer as they prepare for the 2010 NFL football season in a few months.

That’s probably why some of these teams are signing names here and there to get that perfect combination they are hoping will win them the Super Bowl. The Arizona Cardinals, for instance, have scheduled a visit with Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, a restricted free agent, as they explore adding depth as well as potential competition for Matt Leinart for that QB spot.

If the Cardinals sign Whitehurst and the Chargers decline to match the offer, Arizona would owe San Diego a third-round draft pick, which is the qualifying contract tender that was used on the quarterback, who was a third-round choice in 2006. That tender is worth $1,176,000 for the 2010 season.

The Cardinals have two third-round draft choices next month, having acquired Baltimore’s third- and fourth-round picks in a deal that sent wide receiver Anquan Boldin to the Ravens.

Leinart is the only quarterback currently under contract on the Cardinals’ roster.

On the other hand, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has agreed to re-sign reserve defensive back Leigh Torrence to a one-year contract.

Torrence has been with the Saints since being claimed off waivers in…

2010 NFL Season to have bigger beasts in the AFC East?

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The AFC East just became the best division in football.

With the addition of Brandon Marshall in the Miami Dolphins lineup this 2010 NFL football season, a trade that surprised a lot of teams since Marshall is a talented but troubled wide receiver, the AFC East just got interesting.

The Dolphins’ decision to acquire Brandon Marshall made the AFC East the best conference in the NFL. Add to that, Dolphins signed him to a four-year, $47.5 million contract with $24 million guaranteed, while giving up several second-round draft picks. This is a lot of money, and a big gamble on a guy who has had his share of on- and off-the-field issues.

With the addition of Marshall and the continued development of Chad Henne, the Dolphins are poised to be in the thick of things.

Take the Dolphins’ rushing attack and a quarterback who can actually stretch the field with his arm, and the Miami Dolphins offense now looks to be viable. The defense was solid last season, and they believe removing Joey Porter will allow them to actually get younger and more athletic at the linebacker position.

The New York Jets have made a lot of offseason acquisitions too like Antonio Cromartie, LaDanian Tomlinson, and Santonio Holmes all for relatively favorable terms for the Jets. Cromartie can be considered a gamble, but if he can return to his form of a few years ago, the Jets will have the best secondary in the league by far.

Key Additions NFL Teams made for the coming season

Monday, June 28th, 2010

And mind you, there are quite a few.

The 2010 NFL football season draws near and that means some NFL teams have began tweaking their rosters here and there to find that combination that they hope will win them the Super Bowl.

First we have the New York Giants. They announced that they signed Jim Sorgi to a one-year deal. Contract terms were not disclosed. He will be backing up Eli Manning after doing the same job for six years working with his brother Peyton.

Sorgi will compete with second-year man Rhett Bomar for the Giants’ backup quarterback job. The 6-foot-5, 196-pound quarterback was the Colts’ sixth-round draft choice in 2004.

He has appeared in 16 NFL games, completing 99 of 156 pass attempts for 929 yards, with six touchdowns and one interception. He played in only one game in 2009, and was placed on injured reserve in December with shoulder tendinitis.

Next, the Minnesota Vikings signed kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd and re-signed cornerback Benny Sapp. Lloyd handled kickoffs for the Carolina Panthers the past two seasons, leading the NFL with 30 touchbacks in 2008. He had 21 touchbacks last year, tied for fourth-most in the league.

Ryan Longwell remains the regular kicker for…

With McNabb out of the Eagles, should Kolb really start?

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

At least that’s what Eagles coach Andy Reid feels.

Yes, Kevin Kolb will be starting for the Philadelphia Eagles once the 2010 NFL football season gets here. That’s right, Kolb will finally get the opportunity to show Eagles fans why their team drafted him three years ago.

And as far as Kevin Kolb is concerned, he’s ready for the challenge ahead. Andy Reid has already talked about how much confidence he has in Kolb and the command his young quarterback has over the Philadelphia Eagles offense. Kolb feels it’s his time to show the rest of the world that he is a star in the NFL.

”Everything I’ve done in my life has led to this,” Kevin Kolb said. ”I’m ready to roll and lead this team.”

”I didn’t even blink when Andy told me. I really didn’t,” Kolb said, referring to him being promoted to the starting role. ”I’m excited about it. I’m sure it will have a little drama, but it will be a fun ride. I truly have that outlook on it. I think this team will surprise some people.”

”I trusted the organization, I trusted Andy to get me here one day,” Kolb added. ”The times last year when I started that I felt I was ready, but the team wasn’t ready, maybe the city wasn’t ready. I knew Andy would put me in the situation to be the starter.”

Of course, you can’t blame some people who feel Kolb shouldn’t be…

The Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins

Monday, April 5th, 2010

WOW. Now that could be the biggest deal made in the NFL for quite a while.

Looks like the Philadelphia Eagles will have a brand new look for the 2010 NFL football season with the departure of the two huge pieces that ran the team for the past few years. In case you haven’t heard, the team parted ways with star running back Brian Westbrook, and now, just a few hours ago, they sent star quarterback Donovan McNabb to Washington.

You read it, Donovan McNabb was traded to the Washington Redskins for a pair of draft picks Sunday night. Football fans saw this coming a mile away but McNabb and the entire Eagles organization denied it, sort of.

With McNabb now in D.C., that should ”hopefully” give the Washington Redskins a solid threat at the QB spot. Something Jason Campbell failed at, miserably, the last couple of seasons.

As for the Philadelphia Eagles, I have no idea why they thought trading McNabb away was the right way to go in their quest for a Super Bowl championship. Sure, McNabb is probably in the twilight of his career but c’mon, the guy is still a whole lot better than most guys in the NFL.

”Donovan McNabb was more than a franchise quarterback for this team,” Eagles…

Will we see an uncapped 2010 NFL Football Season?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

We just might.

Another round of labor talks between the NFL and NFLPA took place while the scouting combine got underway, and still there was no indication of a new collective bargaining agreement being reached, meaning a 2010 NFL football season without a salary cap seems a certainty.

Negotiating committees for the NFL, including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the NFLPA that includes executive director DeMaurice Smith, Colts center Jeff Saturday and Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel were among several participants, met for more than 90 minutes.

Goodell said the two sides discussed ‘’setting up” another meeting, but did not establish a date. Goodell declined to discuss other topics on the agenda, but said he remains hopeful the two sides will negotiate a deal before the CBA expires.

”I think it’s natural that deadlines produce results, so I think deadlines help,” he said. ”I think there is a general desire on both sides to get a deal. But I don’t think you can create artificial deadlines.”

Smith and other NFLPA executives will meet with player representatives and some agents at another meeting where the NFLPA will address a larger group of agents and player reps. The state of labor and how they will impact players and agents will be the main subject of discussion.

Goodell ruled out any chance of the owners agreeing to a…
