The Rivalry between the Patriots and the Jets Resumes

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgTom Brady hates the New York Jets. Rex Ryan doesn’t like the New England Patriots.

The verbal sparring has started again between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets. And what’s funny is, the 2010 NFL football season hasn’t even started yet.

During his contractually mandated weekly appearance on WEEI radio on Monday, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was asked about “Hard Knocks,” the HBO show giving an inside look at the Jets training camp. “Honestly, I haven’t turned it on,” he said in a casual manner. “I hate the Jets, so I refuse to support that show.”

The question and answer lasted just 42 seconds and came two-thirds of the way through a 19 1/2 -minute interview. But it didn’t take long for the Jets to hear about the words from Brady, who usually is more guarded in his comments.

Ryan’s, whose tongue is a lot looser, liked Brady’s remark. “It’s great. Hey, join the club,” Ryan said with a laugh.

The back-and-forth may be calculated to stir emotions. It may be the true feelings of the star quarterback and the brash coach. Or it might be just good-natured, off-the-cuff banter. But their words enlivened the often boring preseason routines. Ryan isn’t a big fan of Tom Brady or the team that has dominated the AFC East, a status that seems threatened by the Jets’ addition of key veterans in the offseason.

Hell, he knows we hate the Patriots, so what’s the difference?” the coach said with a smile. “My brother’s got a couple of Super Bowl rings. He loves Tom Brady, but I don’t have them, so I don’t like Tom Brady. I respect him, but I don’t like him.”

His brother Rob is a former Patriots assistant. Rex took…

2010 NFL Season to have bigger beasts in the AFC East?

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

The AFC East just became the best division in football.

With the addition of Brandon Marshall in the Miami Dolphins lineup this 2010 NFL football season, a trade that surprised a lot of teams since Marshall is a talented but troubled wide receiver, the AFC East just got interesting.

The Dolphins’ decision to acquire Brandon Marshall made the AFC East the best conference in the NFL. Add to that, Dolphins signed him to a four-year, $47.5 million contract with $24 million guaranteed, while giving up several second-round draft picks. This is a lot of money, and a big gamble on a guy who has had his share of on- and off-the-field issues.

With the addition of Marshall and the continued development of Chad Henne, the Dolphins are poised to be in the thick of things.

Take the Dolphins’ rushing attack and a quarterback who can actually stretch the field with his arm, and the Miami Dolphins offense now looks to be viable. The defense was solid last season, and they believe removing Joey Porter will allow them to actually get younger and more athletic at the linebacker position.

The New York Jets have made a lot of offseason acquisitions too like Antonio Cromartie, LaDanian Tomlinson, and Santonio Holmes all for relatively favorable terms for the Jets. Cromartie can be considered a gamble, but if he can return to his form of a few years ago, the Jets will have the best secondary in the league by far.

Mark Sanchez should be better after a full season under…

Sign that Brett Favre is coming back to the Vikings?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

In case you’re wondering, yes, Brett Favre is still teasing the rest of the NFL about whether he’ll finally retire or come back for one more season.

And in case you have not been keeping count, Brett Favre has been putting his fans through this charade for the third straight year now. First it was in 2008 when he announced his retirement before ending up in New York to play for the Jets. Then there was that ”low-key” press conference where he announced his retirement again only to play for the Minnesota Vikings afterwards.

Coming to the 2010 NFL football season, it’s no surprise that everybody is looking at Brett Favre again, wondering if he’ll finally retire this time or give it another go, for the third straight time. And if you are a Vikings fan hoping that Favre will indeed come back for the coming season, then you should be happy to know that we have seen some signs that say Favre will indeed suit up and play again.

If you didn’t know it yet, Brett Favre decided to undergo ankle surgery and his decision to have surgery down south has decreased any doubts about his desire to play for the Minnesota Vikings again. Favre’s teammates from Minnesota share the same sentiments.

”I think that’s some promising news,” tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said after Thursday’s practice. ”Why’d he get ankle surgery? That’s the first thing that came through my mind.”

”Seems like he got it for the season, because that’s what he needed to come back to the Vikings. But whatever’s best for him and his family and for his old body, old, old, old body, I stress that. He has to make a decision that’s good for him.”

”You always want to end on top,” Shiancoe said…

After rape allegations, Roethlisberger could be traded

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgThat’s right, the Steelers are probably starting to get sick and tired of all this shit their star quarterback always finds himself into during the offseason.

In case you haven’t heard, Ben Roethlisberger faced allegations that he sexually assaulted a 20 – year – old college student in the town of Milledgeville, Ga thus tarnishing his good and squeaky clean image.

The Pittsburgh Steelers meanwhile, are known for being a blue-collar franchise with a reputation for toughness without any tolerance for nonsense. It’s understandable that they are very upset with Roethlisberger and his recent antics.

The Steelers already tried to clean house and keep their reputation intact by dealing star wideout Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a measly 5th round pick after the Super Bowl MVP was suspended by the league due to violations of substance abuse policy.

Now it looks like it’s Roethlisberger’s turn although I don’t know if the Steelers will really trade the guy who already got them two Super Bowl titles.

But if they do, rumors have circulated that the Buffalo Bills are interested, but an even stronger possibility is the St. Louis Rams. The Rams hold the no.1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and according to the rumors, the Steelers are keen on drafting Sam Bradford, a guy they consider to be a ‘’sure thing” as a franchise quarterback.

The Rams may offer their no.1 pick as well as their 2011 first round pick, and perhaps even more, in exchange for Roethlisberger.

The Rams are desperate for a credible playmaker on offense…

LaDainian Tomlinson signs with the New York Jets

Monday, March 15th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt looks like the Jets have once again signed a big name superstar who’s trying to prove something coming to the new season.

Yes, LaDainian Tomlinson will be playing for the New York Jets in the 2010 NFL football season. L.T. will be the Jets’ latest high profile superstar, joining the likes of Brett Favre, Bart Scott, Braylon Edwards and Antonio Cromartie who the Jets have signed the last few years, all were looking then to salvage what’s left of their playing days in the Big Apple.

But since LaDainian Tomlinson is joining the very team that ranked first in the league in rushing offense last season, there shouldn’t be any problems for L.T. to get going for New York right? After all, he made a career out of running the ball for years, even winning him the league MVP back in ‘06.

Well, if he was five years younger, there wouldn’t be any problems alright. But at 30, that’s a little hard to say for sure. Still, Tomlinson’s age hasn’t fazed his confidence one bit and he feels his marriage with the New York Jets will equate to a Super Bowl title. He wouldn’t be there if he thought otherwise.

”He wanted to go to a team that he thought had a chance to compete for the championship,” Tomlinson’s agent Tom Condon said in an interview. ”He wanted to go somewhere where he had a chance to have a significant role, and so with the Jets he also was going to be very familiar with the offensive system.”

With the $5.1 million the Jets are paying Tomlinson, he’s got to be ”familiar with the system” alright. The Jets signed Tomlinson to a two-year contract and if it turns out that Tomlinson still got it…

Can the Colts win another Super Bowl title in Miami?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgWell, these guys already played for FOUR Super Bowl titles in Miami, winning two with the last one against the Bears three years ago.

To say that the Indianapolis Colts will have some sort of homecourt advantage in Super Bowl XLIV is a HUGE understatement. The New Orleans Saints may have the emotional drive going for them but when it comes to playing for the Super Bowl, in Miami, it seems you just can’t go wrong with the Colts.

And in case you didn’t get that, yes, the 16-2 Indianapolis Colts, who won their second AFC championship in four seasons, will play the 15-3 New Orleans Saints for the Super Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.

Miami, of course, is old hat for the Colts. All four of their Super Bowl appearances, including their two wins, have taken place in South Florida. And it seems kinda’ strange that the Colts found a way to return to the Super Bowl to play the New Orleans Saints at the same time the league decided to return to Miami for the big game.

The Colts advanced to their fourth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, their second of the Indianapolis era, by rallying from an 11-point first-half deficit against the New York Jets.

Quarterback Peyton Manning was simply phenomenal as he completed…

Will Brett Favre Retire or Return for Another Season?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Heeere we go again.

In what has now become an annual tradition in the NFL, football fans will once again wait for Favre’s decision on whether he’ll walk away from football and retire or if he’ll give it another shot once we crown another champion at Super Bowl XLIV.

For the fourth straight year, (or fifth… probably…) Brett Favre will talk to his family and decide if giving it another go next season is ”the right thing to do.” But as of this writing, Favre says his return for another campaign is ”highly unlikely.” And in case you were wondering, yes, you heard that one from him before.

”Just wondering if I can hold up, especially after a day like today,” Favre said after throwing for 310 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday in their loss to the New Orleans Saints. ”Physically and mentally. That was pretty draining. I am going to go home, a couple of days and just talk it over with the family.”

In case you didn’t know, Brett Favre has been contemplating on retirement for years. Heck, the guy ALREADY RETIRED, TWICE, but decided to come back anyway. He came back to play for the New York Jets after his first retirement then retired again after missing the playoffs only to come back last August to play for the Minnesota Vikings.

With Favre once again at that time of the year, can we…

SPORTSBETTING.com breaks down Super Bowl XLIV between Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

You just know you’ll read through this, unless your a Raiders fan who could care less who wins it this year.

For anyone that pays attention to NFL power rankings throughout the season, the writing for this matchup has been on the wall for months. As I’m sure you’ve all heard, Indianapolis will meet New Orleans in Super Bowl XLIV and for a lot of bettors it truly is the two teams that most deserve to be in the show.

Online sportsbooks have the current line at Indianapolis Colts -6 with a Total of 56. Once the opening line was posted, money showed up quickly on the favored Indianapolis Colts at SPORTSBETTING.com. The Colts continued to be the side most players were looking at, as over the fist couple of days of wagering action 70 percent of the money is on Peyton Manning and crew. The line has moved to -6. The Over/Under betting volume has been pretty balanced, with a slight lean to the Over

Indianapolis was 14-0 before sitting Peyton Manning down in a Week 16 loss to the New York Jets while New Orleans went 13-0 before heading into the playoffs on a three-game losing streak. Looking at results from the past two weeks it appears that for coaches Caldwell and Peyton, this was all part of the master plan.

The Indianapolis Colts made things up to their fans with wins over Baltimore and the Jets.

In the Big Easy, the New Orleans Saints returned to their regular season ways, averaging 38 points per game in wins against Arizona and Minnesota to earn the trip to Miami to play for the Super Bowl against the Colts. This will be the first time since 1993 that two No.1 seeds have met in the Super Bowl.

Manning’s offense is capable of moving the ball against…

The 2010 NFL Pro Bowl sets us up for Super Bowl XLIV

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgFor the first time ever, the Pro Bowl will come a week before THE big game, as this year’s Pro Bowl kicks off Super Bowl week with a bang.

Yes, the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl will now come before the Super Bowl and this year, the best players from both the AFC and the NFC will play at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Florida for this year’s annual showcase of the league’s premiere talent.

This way, football fans will be able to further build their anticipation heading to Super Bowl XLIV and as far as this year’s Pro Bowl starters are concerned, both teams’ rosters have some familiar faces.

Leading the pack for the AFC squad is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Other selections include Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson, Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and Colts teammate Reggie Wayne.

Dallas Clark, who also plays for the Indianapolis Colts, was also voted in for the Pro Bowl to play tight end, starting tackles will be the Dolphins’ Jake Long and the Broncos’ Ryan Clady. Starting guards for the AFC will be the Patriots’ Logan Mankins and Alan Faneca of the New York Jets.

Faneca’s teammate Nick Mangold will be the AFC’s starting center…

Saints are in Super Bowl XLIV, send Favre to retirement

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Probably. Knowing Favre, he’ll probably retire for the third time only to come back two weeks after his retirement speech.

In case you missed it, the New Orleans Saints probably convinced Brett Favre to finally call it quits with the way they’ve been putting the guy on the ground all game long en route to their 31-28 win in overtime to earn the trip to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Florida.

Yep, the New Orleans Saints put the hurt on Brett Favre alright, as the Vikings quarterback NEVER felt comfortable inside the pocket all day long. To make matters worse, the way the Vikings have been turning the ball over didn’t help.

The Minnesota Vikings turned the ball over FIVE TIMES. FIVE. You can’t do that when you’re up against a team like the New Orleans Saints who are just dying to have the ball back on offense and in a game like this with a trip to the Super Bowl at stake.

Nobody told the Vikings. Nobody told Brett Favre.

The Vikings had the perfect opportunity to salvage the game and win it in regulation. They WERE in field goal range with 19 seconds remaining in the game. Unfortunately, they had 12 guys in the huddle as the Vikes were penalized for five yards, taking the field goal attempt out of the question.

They still had a shot at getting back inside field goal range if…
