Is Alabama the most valuable team in College Football?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

College football is back baby.

And for the first time in quite a while, the Alabama Crimson Tide will come to the 2010 NCAA college football season as the national champions, looking to defend that title in the BCS title game come January.

The popularity of the Alabama Crimson Tide is hard to exaggerate. According to Forbes, the team’s “waiting list to obtain season tickets for the Crimson Tide is currently 15,210 names long.”

Furthermore, simply being next up on the list is no guarantee of getting tickets. The only thing coming up on the list entitles you to do is “make a donation to the athletic department ranging from $5,000 to $500,000″ depending on the location of seats you wish to buy tickets for.

Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban is the fourth highest paid coach in college football, raking in about $3.9 million per season. No wonder the guy was determined to bring the title to Alabama since bamboozling Dolphins fans into thinking that he’ll stay with them for the long haul.

With everything going for the Tide, just who can challenge these guys heading to the season in terms of being the most valuable commodity on the gridiron? Of course, one team comes to mind and that’s last year’s runners-up, the Texas Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns is the most valuable college football team right now…

Like the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the BCS Title?

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgWe do too.

And that’s despite the fact that Alabama is coming to the 2010 BCS national championship game without any experience whatsoever playing in a game this big with the freaking national title at stake.

Yep, the Alabama Crimson Tide is coming to their first ever BCS national championship game facing the Texas Longhorns who have already won it five years ago on the same field that they’ll be in this Thursday night. We still like the Tide though, here’s why.

Third year head coach Nick Saban has engineered a quick turnaround in Tuscaloosa as he led the Alabama Crimson Tide to two undefeated seasons in the last two years. This season, the Crimson Tide dominated the defending national champions Florida Gators to win the SEC title, earning a bid for the Crystal Trophy for the first time.

Alabama enjoyed a significantly improved season on offense. Behind the rushing of Mark Ingram and the steady play of quarterback Greg McElroy, the Tide scored an average of 31.7 points per game, finishing 27th nationally.

Their running game was dominant, finishing 8th in the country and earning starting tailback Mark Ingram an invite to the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Their passing offense was efficient but it only finished 67th nationally, showing their commitment to running the football. With the way Ingram has been running with the football, nobody is complaining.

As good as their offense already is, the Crimson Tide’s…

Betting on the 2010 BCS Bowl Games this January? SPORTSBETTING.com has you covered of course.

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Water coolers and sports talk radio hosts can rejoice once again this year, as the BCS system has people bemoaning the lack of a true playoff system in college ball.

In case you didn’t know it yet, the Alabama Crimson Tide pulled off a tidy upset of the No.1 Florida Gators last Saturday, moving into the 2010 BCS national championship game. Listed anywhere from as 5.5-point underdogs up to +7, ‘Bama was getting only about 30 percent of all the betting action by kick-off, according to online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com.

Bettors took a hit when the Tide defense did a number on Gator QB Tim Tebow en route to a 32-13 win.

Now Nick Saban and the rest of the Alabama Crimson Tide will prepare to play the Texas Longhorns, who were much less convincing in their BCS title berth showcase.

texas_longhornsComing into last week ranked No.3 by the BCS, the Texas Longhorns were set for one of the national championship spots, facing the No.22 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big 12 title game. Texas was in a ”win and you’re in” scenario, kicking off as 14-point favorites.

It was hardly a convincing win, as Texas struggled throughout, but they did manage to eke out a 13-12 win to claim the conference championship. Texas bettors were never really in a spot to cover the two touchdowns all game and moneyline bettors were fortunate to get even the straight up win.

The near-loss to the Cornhuskers didn’t matter to…

Florida Gators V Alabama Crimson Tide for the SEC Title

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Arguably the biggest game of the weekend, the top two teams of the nation, both still yet to taste defeat this 2009 NCAA college football season, collide as No.1 Florida Gators take on No.2 Alabama Crimson Tide for the SEC title.

That’s right, the SEC championship game will pit two undefeated teams against each other in order to decide who wins the conference this season. The 2009 SEC championship game will also most likely decide who will play for the national title come January.

tim_tebowThis title game between the Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide is dubbed as the most anticipated matchup in college football since Florida and Oklahoma played in the BCS title game last year. It’s the game people started talking about in the preseason and have been pointing to ever since and now it’s finally here.

The Florida Gators and the Alabama Crimson Tide are in a battle between two high-profile coaches; Florida’s Urban Meyer and Alabama’s Nick Saban. This contest will also be about two Heisman trophy hopefuls Tim Tebow and Mark Ingram, not to mention a war between two of the nation’s best defenses with a spot in the national championship game on the line. The winner advances to…

2009 College Football Week 12 Gambling Guide

Friday, November 20th, 2009

After 11 weeks of football, majority of the teams looking for a national title come January are still undefeated.

How about that huh? And as Week 12 of the 2009 NCAA college football season continues, these teams are hoping to stay undefeated. They know playing for a national title is as tough as nails and getting the invite to play for a national title is a tad tougher.

One team looking to remain undefeated is the Alabama Crimson Tide. They have the Chattanooga Mocs this Saturday. Can they remain undefeated? Head coach Nick Saban certainly hopes so.

oklahoma_soonersNick Saban seeks the best effort yet from the second ranked Crimson Tide on Saturday when they host the Chattanooga Mocs in their final non-conference matchup before bowl season. Alabama’s offense relies on their relentless ground game, which averages 216.9 yards, led by sophomore running back Mark Ingram, who already has numbers like 1,297 yards, 10 touchdowns and 6.7 yards per carry. Last week, though, junior quarterback Greg McElroy was also a big factor, throwing for TDs of 48 and 45 yards.

The Tide have put 127 points on the board in three wins outside…

LSU Tigers take on the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Boy, talk about a huge game eh?

Week 10 of the 2009 NCAA college football season continues with a huge game between the LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Alabama Crimson Tide, led by head coach Nick Saban, is yet to drop a single game this year. They are looking to play for the national title this season and anything less than that will be deemed a failure.

Is this the year that the Crimson Tide makes it? They will be tested by the LSU Tigers who may have found their running game back after blitzing Tulane 42-0 in their previous game.

lsu_tigersThe Tigers, who have been inconsistent throughout the year, ran for a season-high 267 yards, averaging 6.5 yards a carry against the Green Wave. Running back Charles Scott led the way with 18 carries for 112 yards, his first game over the 100-yard mark this season.

QB Jordan Jefferson was 11-of-17 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns against Tulane, giving him 10 touchdown passes for the season. He was intercepted once and sacked twice. Trindon Holliday had 105 yards on three punt returns, including a pair of 50-yard runbacks. The senior sprinter now has 475 punt return yards in his career, no.10 on LSU’s all-time list.

For the Alabama Crimson Tide, they know that this…

Alabama Crimson Tide – Utah Utes in the Sugar Bowl

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s so unfortunate for the Crimson Tide to end what has been a dominant year this way.

The Alabama Crimson Tide stayed on top of the BCS rankings the longest this 2008 NCAA college football season. Head coach Nick Saban has done an awesome job keeping the Crimson Tide at the top of their game.

Unfortunately, the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered a 31-20 loss to the Florida Gators at the wrong time, during the last few weeks of the season. The defeat couldn’t have come at a worse time, since it gave Alabama no chance to bounce back like other one-loss teams like, ironically Florida and the Oklahoma Sooners, two teams facing off in the BCS championship game in Miami. So instead of playing for the national title, they had to settle for the 2009 AllState Sugar Bowl.

Nick SabanDespite that, the Alabama Crimson Tide was STILL one of the country’s most compelling teams, returning to national prominence in coach Nick Saban’s second season.

Before Nick Saban arrived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama had gone through a rough decade; four coaches, four losing seasons, stifling NCAA sanctions and just one appearance in a major bowl. Saban brought the Crimson Tide back and despite losing out on a chance to play for the BCS national title, the season they had is still a success, anyway you look at it.

They meet the Utah Utes, also returning to prominence with…

Alabama Crimson Tide play Florida Gators for BCS spot

Friday, December 5th, 2008

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s the final stretch in college football and these two teams are in a foot race for a chance to play in the championship game.

Yes, it’s Week 15 of the 2008 NCAA college football season. With only three more games to play for most of these teams, every win is as important as the next one with the BCS bowl games just around the corner.

And in perhaps the biggest game of the week, the No.1 Alabama Crimson Tide will play hosts to the No.4 Florida Gators this Saturday. One of the two spots for the BCS national championship game will be at stake so you just know both teams will be coming in strong, looking to win this huge game, by any means necessary.

The Crimson Tide (12-0, 8-0 SEC) were Tim Tebowranked 24th in the preseason AP Top 25, an indication that improvement was expected from a team that went 7-6 and didn’t receive a single poll vote at the end of Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa. A five-point underdog to preseason ACC favorite Clemson Tigers on Aug.30 in Atlanta, Alabama dominated the No.9 Tigers, holding the ball for more than 41 minutes of a 34-10 victory. Yep, the Florida Gators are in for a tough battle indeed.

Ball control and defense were key for the success of the Tide as they have piled up 11 wins. Alabama ranks third in the Bowl Subdivision in scoring defense (11.5 ppg) and total defense…

BCS Rankings after Week 11 in College Football

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Guess what, that little team Nick Saban has been coaching is still the No.1 team of the country.

You read it, the Alabama Crimson Tide, led by Nick Saban, is still at the top of the BCS rankings after 11 weeks into the 2008 NCAA college football season. Although they have an identical record with Texas Tech, the Crimson Tide was still chosen at No.1 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches’ polls.

Can the Alabama Crimson Tide stay on top of the BCS rankings? We still have more than a month of college pigskin left and until January arrives, the Crimson Tide will be hoping not to skip a beat.

And as stated, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, after Alabama Crimson Tidebeating Oklahoma State 56-20, are ranked No.2 with the same perfect 10-0 stand as Alabama’s. Right now, Alabama and Texas Tech have the final two spots for the BCS national championship game, can they keep it? Only time can tell for sure.

The (.879) Texas Longhorns are third, followed closely by the (.864) Florida Gators and the (.844) Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns, the Gators and the Sooners, all with one loss, are lurking and ready to take advantage as soon as the two front-runners slip.

Penn State’s loss to Iowa left the Crimson Tide…

2008 NCAA College Football Week 11 Betting Picks (Can Alabama stay on top of the BCS Rankings?)

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

We told you you should watch out for the Crimson Tide this season.

And in case you don’t know it yet, the Crimson Tide are now the No.1 team in the nation after 10 weeks into the 2008 NCAA college football season. Can they keep their No.1 spot at the end of this weekend?

The Alabama Crimson Tide will try to clinch the west division title of the Southeastern Conference and a spot in the conference championship game when they battle with the LSU Tigers this Saturday. Oh yeah, as far as that No.1 spot in the BCS Rankings are concerned, you just know they want to keep that one too.

But for Crimson Tide head coach Penn State Nittany LionsNick Saban, it’s just another game. While his successor, LSU Tigers coach Les Miles, may agree with the sentiment, Saban has been adamant in downplaying the impact of his return to ”Death Valley” in his second year with Alabama. While he did coach a game at LSU while with the Miami Dolphins in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina, coming back to the campus he led to the 2003 BCS championship as a Crimson Tide coach is expected to produce a hostile reaction among the 92,000-plus LSU fans.

Can LSU, fueled by their fans, beat the No.1 team of the country? I don’t think so.

Next, we have No.2 Texas Tech Red Raiders looking to extend the…
