Teams continue to prepare for the 2010 NFL Season

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgChemistry, perhaps that’s the key to winning a Super Bowl.

Or is it defense? A hot shot quarterback with reliable receivers? The wildcat? Those are just some of the questions NFL teams are trying to answer as they prepare for the 2010 NFL football season in a few months.

That’s probably why some of these teams are signing names here and there to get that perfect combination they are hoping will win them the Super Bowl. The Arizona Cardinals, for instance, have scheduled a visit with Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, a restricted free agent, as they explore adding depth as well as potential competition for Matt Leinart for that QB spot.

If the Cardinals sign Whitehurst and the Chargers decline to match the offer, Arizona would owe San Diego a third-round draft pick, which is the qualifying contract tender that was used on the quarterback, who was a third-round choice in 2006. That tender is worth $1,176,000 for the 2010 season.

The Cardinals have two third-round draft choices next month, having acquired Baltimore’s third- and fourth-round picks in a deal that sent wide receiver Anquan Boldin to the Ravens.

Leinart is the only quarterback currently under contract on the Cardinals’ roster.

On the other hand, New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has agreed to re-sign reserve defensive back Leigh Torrence to a one-year contract.

Torrence has been with the Saints since being claimed off waivers in…

Big Week 1 in the 2008 NCAA College Football Season

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

We are only days away from football season people.

The 2008 NCAA college football season begins on August 28, Thursday, as the brand new college football year kicks off with a massive 14-game schedule. Yep, it has been a while since we had football and the NCAA is kicking it off with a bang.

There are three exciting games that you should not miss next week, beginning with the 23rd seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons visiting the Baylor Bears to mark the start of this year’s wars on the college gridiron.

Last season proved that the South Carolina Gamecocks2006 success the Wake Forest Demon Deacons put together was no fluke and that the program will continue to be a contender in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Sure, the success was not as substantial but still, with the Demon Deacons putting together a nine-win season, they were able to hang in there atop the Atlantic division race.

With a host of defensive players returning and a majority of the skill players on offense, head coach Jim Grobe will look to take the next big step this year. ”We’ve been in the position before where we’ve come into August without a very good feel about our starters,” coach Jim…

Arizona Wildcats to kick USC Trojans Booty Saturday?

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s a longshot but if these Wildcats want to earn an upset win over powerhouse USC, this Saturday is the best time.

The 2007-08 NCAA college football season couldn’t be any more exciting, especially with the number of upsets we’ve witnessed the last couple of weeks. As of press time, powerhouse USC is sitting 10th in the rankings and on Saturday, they could be going down the proverbial ladder even further.

Why? Well, USC Trojans quarterback John David Booty could miss this Saturday’s game after breaking his middle finger on his throwing hand in a shocking 24-23 loss to the Stanford Cardinal at home.

Oh yes, the USC Trojans lost to Stanford, ending their incredible 35-game home winning streak in a season that can perhaps be dubbed as the ”year of the upset.” Stanford’s win over USC last Saturday could very well be the upset of the season. After all, Stanford was a 41-point underdog coming to that game.

The Trojans will be facing a team they should have no business losing to for the second straight week. The 2-4 Arizona Wildcats are coming off a 31-16 loss to the Oregon State Beavers but with the Trojans’ star quarterback hurting, another upset could be in the making.

John David Booty has a broken finger in his…

2007 NCAA College Football Week 7 Betting Picks

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

If last Wednesday’s game was any indication of what will the rest of these Week 7 games will be, then we’re in for a treat.

Last Wednesday, regulation wasn’t enough for both the Navy Midshipmen and the Pittsburgh Panthers. Hell, the game went for TWO overtimes and was due for yet another if it wasn’t for an idiotic move in Pittsburgh’s part. In the end, it was another loss for Pittsburgh in the 2007 NCAA college football season.

You see, the Panthers were down a field goal, 48-45, and could’ve tied the game again to send the game into a third extra period with merely a few seconds left. Instead, they gambled and went for it on fourth down.

Florida State SeminolesThe Navy Midshipmen stopped them. Game over.

Not the way you want to start your football campaign. The Pittsburgh Panthers now sit at a dismal 2-4 start. As for the rest of them games in Week 7, that’s exactly how you start another week of college football.

Coming to Week 7, the rest of them college football programs will be hoping that they will stay away from such an idiotic coaching decision that paved the way for yet another upset this season. It seems that’s the theme this year, with programs like USC, Florida and Texas losing to unheralded teams nobody has even heard of.

And yep, it continues this…

UNC wages war at March Madness Bracket Thursday

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Yep, the North Carolina Tar Heels will begin their march for the 2007 NCAA College Basketball title on Thursday.

The no.1 seed North Carolina Tar Heels will meet the no.16 seed Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Thursday to open up the 2007 March Madness bracket tournament as UNC begins their march from the Field of 65 to the Sweet 16, the Elite Eight, the NCAA Final Four and finally, to the NCAA College Basketball championship game.

Of course, the North Carolina Tar Heels are expected to just dismantle Eastern Kentucky. Heck, Tyler Hansbrough should have a huge game on Thursday, with or without the stupid mask.

unc_duke1.jpgThe Tar Heels are looking to repeat the success these guys had back in ‘05 when they went on to become the national champions. Head coach Roy Williams for one, expects no less than a national championship after it’s all said and done. Williams, after all, have seen his fair share of good NCAA College Basketball clubs, including FOUR different Kansas teams he took all the way to the Final Four.

With that said, can he bring the North Carolina Tar Heels to the 2007 NCAA Final Four?

The North Carolina Tar Heels are one of four No.1 seeds in the March Madness bracket this year. No other team can match the Tar Heels’ combination of inside-outside balance, depth of talent, size and quickness. And I’m not just saying that just because I’m a huge Tar Heel fan.

The Tar Heels get 33.7 points and 14.3 rebounds from post players Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright. Hansbrough, only a sophomore, already is a two-time All-American. Wright, only a freshman, is potentially the No.3 overall pick in the…
