Betting on UFC 117: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen?

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgYes, we know you are.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns on Saturday, August 7th from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA as fight fans will be treated to a world championship showdown between middleweight title holder and pound for pound king Anderson “The Spider” Silva, and number one challenger Chael Sonnen in UFC 117.

In case you’re new to the world of MMA, Anderson Silva has dominated the 185-pound division since 2006, but in Chael Sonnen, he may be meeting the one man with the style and determination to unseat him from the throne.

Silva has broken down everyone put in front of him and hasn’t been close to being tested or in trouble in any of his fights. He is nearly untouchable and seems to have ninja like skills in the Octagon. Here comes the rub. In his last three fights, Silva has seemed very bored. All of his last three fights have ended in decision victories. Silva has been coasting through the fights and putting on dance steps like never seen before in the UFC. His title defense at UFC 112 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi was a disgrace on many fronts.

On the other hand, Chael Sonnen was brought over to the UFC from the WEC and has went 3-1 in his four fights. About the time Anderson Silva has started playing games instead of fighting, Sonnen became extremely vocal about the situation. His trash talking rings of the little brother trying to incite his big brother into a rumble.

It will be interesting to see what Silva does when Sonnen pushes the pace. Sonnen has won three in a row, which includes a complete domination of Nate Marquardt. Sonnen is tough as nails and isn’t afraid to express it physically or verbally. He has won ten of his last twelve and actually believes he is the one to end Silva’s reign. If Silva takes him lightly, Sonnen might be right. Sonnen likes to ride fights out and wear down his opponents until he grinds out the decision.

That’s the match for the middleweight championship…

BJ Penn not taking Frankie Edgar seriously for UFC 112?

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Well, that’s what most people think. (And what Frankie Edgar is hoping for, probably…)

Once again, BJ Penn is putting his UFC lightweight title up for grabs as he defends his belt again this time against Frankie Edgar in UFC 112. However, there are rumors that claim Penn is gearing up for another run at the welterweight title, leading most to believe that the reigning lightweight champ is not taking his challenger seriously.

However, while BJ Penn hasn’t denied the rumors of him moving up to welterweight, he says he’s not looking past Frankie Edgar. He knows how good of a fighter Edgar is and he can’t afford to take a guy of Edgar’s caliber lightly.

”Yeah, I think there is a possibility of that,” BJ Penn said in an interview, referring to a possible move to the welterweight division.

”I don’t in no way want to look past Frankie Edgar, he’s a good fighter. You never know what could happen. But if I go back to welterweight, maybe I’ll try to give it a run, maybe fight a couple of fights there, we’ll see how it goes.”

Oh yeah, and just when he said in his interview that he’s in no way looking past Frankie Edgar, he immediately went on about his chances against the large 170-pound fighters in the welterweight division like…

Fights to watch and bet on at UFC 100 this Saturday

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Of course we’d be betting on some matches.

This Saturday, the much anticipated UFC 100 will finally arrive as the biggest promotion in mixed martial arts has packed together one mega event with some huge blockbuster cards.

One of which is the unification title fight between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and UFC interim champion Frank Mir. This is the second meeting between the two heavyweights where the winner will be named as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

Michael Bisping vs. Dan HendersonTheir first meeting ended with some controversy with referee Steve Mazzagatti giving Frank Mir a break when he stood both fighters up and penalized Brock Lesnar for allegedly hitting Mir at the back of the head. Lesnar was in control of Mir before Mazzagatti’s stoppage. When the fight resumed, Mir already had the momentum as he caught Lesnar’s leg to make the former WWE Superstar tap.

Another match you should watch out for is the UFC welterweight championship…

Seriously, can Thiago Alves beat Georges St-Pierre?

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgTo be honest, not many people think so.

On July 11 this weekend, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his title against no.1 contender Thiago Alves at UFC 100, arguably the most anticipated event in the history of MMA.

It is understandable for people to pick Georges St-Pierre as the favorite to win and defend his title. After all, he’s been virtually carrying the welterweight division ever since he decided to have a career inside the Octagon.

Still, Thiago Alves remains confident that he’ll be able to get that title off of GSP’s waist. He even said that he’ll shock the world with, get this, a knockout victory over the biggest MMA star to come out of Canada.

Georges St-PierreAlves will rival St-Pierre in sheer size, as the two men are probably the two biggest fighters currently fighting in the welterweight division. But St-Pierre believes the Brazilian’s mass will not provide the difference in the contest.

Georges St-Pierre has been the better man in 11 of his past 12 contests, but many MMA observers agree with the champ in assessing Alves as his biggest test to date. St-Pierre admits there’s pressure as a champion in the UFC to keep his belt, but ”Rush” also finds that kind of pressure to provide extra motivation inside the cage.

With each win that St-Pierre collects, his legend and…

Will UFC 100 really be a fight fan’s dream event?

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

Well, that’s what the event’s organizers are hoping.

Since UFC 100 on July 11 would officially be the first ever UFC event taking over New York City, the event’s organizers want to make it as big as it can be. They are so determined to do just that that they will be unveiling the UFC’s very first Fan Expo on the 10th, making UFC 100 a huge two-day weekend extravaganza in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For all ya’ll who didn’t know, UFC 100 will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada headlined by the huge UFC heavyweight unification title bout between heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim champion Frank Mir. And while the event will emanate from the Mandalay Bay, the UFC will have a UFC 100 viewing party inside the world-famous Radio City Music Hall in New York City, hosted by Matt Hamill and Frankie Edgar.

Georges St. Pierre”We are thrilled to bring the excitement of the UFC to New York City with this unique viewing party,” stated Joel Fisher, Radio City Music Hall’s executive vice president, sports bookings and arena renovation. ”New York’s passionate mixed martial arts fans will have the rare opportunity to come together and watch the historic event on our 70-foot screen at Radio City Music Hall.”

Aside from the whole New York City invasion, the event’s organizers have decided…

Matt Hughes plans to stay in the UFC, that’s until Georges St. Pierre takes him out for good.

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Apparently, Hughes thinks he can still go toe to toe with the best of MMA.

It looks like Matt Hughes’ win over Matt Serra in UFC 98 has convinced the former UFC welterweight champion to keep his ass in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Fresh from his win over Serra, Matt Hughes claims he has no plans of bringing an end to what has been a legendary career inside the Octagon. That’s despite getting his ass beaten to a bloody pulp by Georges St. Pierre, TWICE, that ultimately brought up questions if he should continue fighting.

”I definitely still want to compete. I still think I’m competitive in the weight division, so we’ll keep going,” Matt Hughes said.

Matt Hughes”It will be interesting to watch Thiago Alves and Georges St. Pierre go at it. It will be an interesting fight for me to watch. We’ll figure it out. Like I’ve said before, I’m not going anywhere.”

Perhaps ”going nowhere” would be the best thing to describe Hughes at this point of his career.

As of this writing, Hughes is a free agent. He could defect to other organizations like what Randy Couture and some of the older fighters of the UFC did, but according to Hughes, he won’t fight for anyone but the UFC.

”I don’t know what I’m going to do. D.W. (Dana White) and I will get in a room and…”
