ROSE BOWL

The anticipation of the proverbial face-off between the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns began even before the 2005 season’s gridiron battles on the NCAA football field started.

The USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns both took the same road going into NCAA football’s grandest stage.

The Trojans and the Longhorns both stood as the only undefeated teams in the country as all the other top teams in the league went down, one by one. Also, both teams were able to fend off late-season scares with impressive one-sided victories to finish the year.

The 4th of January, 2006, in Pasadena, the USC Trojans and the Texas Longhorns faced-off to decide the perennial kings of college football. The 2006 Rose Bowl saw the Texas Longhorns become kings of NCAA College Football.

FIESTA BOWL

Two champions by tradition faced-off last year at the 2006 Fiesta Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish returned to the Bowl Championship Series at the site of its last appearance five years ago from the 2005 season, with it’s last national title in 1989.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be making their third appearance in four years since 2005.

It seems fate has decided to pit these teams together. The 2nd of January, 2006 saw the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Ohio State Buckeyes ‘fiesta.’

SUGAR BOWL

Destiny. That’s the only thing that can describe the Georgia Bulldogs’ invitation to the 2006 Sugar Bowl. The Sugar Bowl is normally held at the Louisiana Superdome but after Hurricane Katrina plagued New Orleans in 2005, the Sugar Bowl was relocated to Atlanta Georgia, the home of the Bulldogs.

Destiny.

The Bulldogs made their second Sugar Bowl appearance in four years since 2005 and it certainly looked like the Georgia Bulldogs simply played out what destiny has given them. There was only one problem though.

The West Virginia Mountaineers, who made its first BCS appearance, played three times in the Sugar Bowl before the said encounter. The first time can be sweet and these Mountaineers surely knew that too well.

The 2nd of January, 2006, the 2006 Sugar Bowl was waged and the taste of destiny was felt by the Georgia Bulldogs, as well as the sweet satisfaction of a first BCS appearance for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

ORANGE BOWL

Players are born everyday. Competitors come out in any given game, no matter how big or how small the costs. On the 3rd of January, 2006, at the 2006 Orange Bowl, no mere players faced-off, no mere competitors came out, they were simply, legends.

The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Florida State Seminoles met in a showdown that featured two of college football’s winningest coaches of that time as Joe Paterno’s Lions met Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles.

This was a slobber-knocker.

This BCS warfare saw the Penn State Nittany Lions made their first-ever appearance in the BCS stage, the Florida State Seminoles on the other hand, made their sixth appearance in eight years.

Many knew that the team to win this proverbial ‘battle of legends’ will definitely have their names etched forever with legendary status for years to come. The 2006 Orange Bowl certainly made both teams just that.
