Steelers and Titans kick off the 2009 NFL Season

By: J.J. Jack

And as far as LenDale White is concerned, let’s hope he can get out of Heinz Field in one piece.

LenDale White is just one of the story lines heading to the very first game of the 2009 NFL football season. You see, White had the audacity to desecrate Pittsburgh’s terrible towels merely days before his Titans and the defending champion Steelers go head to head for the season opener this Thursday.

A case of bad judgment on his part? One thing’s for sure though, this really puts things in perspective as far as the anticipation for the NFL season is concerned.

troy_polamaluAnd as far as Troy Polamalu and the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned, you can bet your ass that they are pumped up for the opener. One, they are coming in as the defending Super Bowl champions. Two, they probably just want to beat the crap out of LenDale White.

The Pittsburgh Steelers look to be in as good a shape as any Super Bowl winner to make a second run at another Lombardi Trophy. The Steelers made it through training camp with no significant setbacks other than losing starting guard Darnell Stapleton to knee surgery for the season.

They return 19 of their 22 starters, including a healthy…

Oprah has the Erin Andrews Nude Peephole Video

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgProbably since Erin Andrews chose her to be her confidant when she finally broke her silence about the whole peephole video situation.

And yes, some people are still looking for the now infamous Erin Andrews nude peephole video on the Internet. And while Ms. Andrews is no longer the hottest bit of news on the web these days, (probably because of Brett Favre AND Michael Vick both making their way back to the NFL…) she found a way to still be relevant by talking to the queen of the talk shows, Oprah.

Yes, ESPN reporter Erin Andrews was on the Oprah Winfrey show talking about the secretly videotaped nude footage of her which was distributed on the Internet. Winfrey’s interview with Andrews will air Friday, Sept.11, as part of a ”Summer Headlines” show that previews the 24th season of ”The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

erin_andrewsIn the interview, Erin Andrews tells Oprah Winfrey that she ”opened up the computer (and) could feel my heart pounding.” Andrews’ attorney has said the blurry five-minute video was shot at a hotel without her knowledge and she plans to seek criminal charges and file lawsuits against whoever shot the video and anyone who publishes it.

It was not clear when the video of Andrews in the hotel room first appeared on the Internet. The person who first posted the video didn’t identify the nude woman, and Andrews’ attorney later confirmed the video was of the 31-year-old reporter.

Andrews, a former University of Florida dance team member, was an Internet sensation even before the video’s circulation. Some web sites have referred to her as ”Erin Pageviews” because of the traffic she can generate, and Playboy magazine named her ‘’sexiest sportscaster” in both 2008 and 2009.

She has covered numerous sports for the network since…

Can Chad Ochocinco keep the Bengals relevant?

By: J.J. Jack

He has to, because if they suffer another losing season then that name change he went through will all be for nothing.

After suffering his worst season since his rookie year as Chad Johnson, the Bengals’ enigmatic wide receiver is looking forward to the coming 2009 NFL football season to redeem himself, this time as Chad Ochocinco.

You read it, he actually went through the name change as the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver now has the last name to go with the no.85 at the back of his jersey. However, name changes should be the least of this guy’s worries.

chad_ochocincoIn case you haven’t noticed, it’s been a while since Cincinnati Bengals fans had something to cheer for. Especially last year when they played most of that season virtually without a passing game with Carson Palmer out for most of the year and Ochocinco struggling.

To make matters worse, the running game never got going either, and the result was a team that ranked dead last in the NFL in points scored and yards gained, finishing 29th in…

Will Peyton and Eli Manning ever miss their receivers?

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgThe Manning brothers have become two of the best quarterbacks in the game and yet, they don’t have anyone to throw the football to this year.

You read it, Peyton and Eli Manning have quite a dilemma coming to the 2009 NFL football season. Both of these guys lost their primary receivers and without that playmaker to throw the football to, they better learn some pointers from Peterson and start running for TDs.

However, if there’s anyone in the league who can win games without a decent wide receiver, a Manning can. And as far as both Peyton Manning and Eli Manning are concerned, the 2009 season will definitely bring both of these guys new challenges but I expect both of them to persevere.

eli_peyton_manningAnd since Peyton Manning is the older brother, we’ll start with him. The Indianapolis Colts will be missing some very familiar faces for the 2009 NFL season. The most glaring of which is the departure of premiere wide receiver Marvin Harrison.

However, as unfortunate as the absence of Marvin Harrison will be on the Colts’ playbook, many probably saw this one coming as early as last season and even the season before that. You see, Harrison has struggled to stay on the field with health issues the last few years. And although he was able to come back from it time and time again, he was simply never the same guy the Colts knew to be.

Fortunately for the Colts, they still have guys like…

The Florida Gators begin their title defense on Saturday

By: J.J. Jack

And it doesn’t even matter who will they be playing against.

The hands down, ultimate, heavy favorite to win it all this 2009 NCAA college football season begin their title defense on Saturday as the defending champions Florida Gators take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers.

Yes, the Florida Gators shouldn’t have a tough time beating these Bucs down. With the way these guys won the BCS title last year, it’s easy to get carried away with the high expectations. That’s probably why coach Urban Meyer put a gag order on quarterback Tim Tebow’s offseason comments about Florida going undefeated. Yes, Tebow actually made the bold statement and I can’t blame him for making it either.

tim_tebowLast season, Florida rallied from a September home loss against Ole Miss to win the SEC title and earn its second BCS title in three seasons. The Gators, with Tim Tebow back to lead the offense and a defense that returns all 11 starters, are heavily favored to make it three titles in four seasons.

There were offseason rumblings that Florida was going to change its home opener to play Utah in order to face a tougher…

With only days before the 2009 NFL Football Season starts, Marvin Harrison still has no team yet…

By: Syndicate

It’s shocking really how one of the premiere wide receivers in the game still doesn’t have a team to play for.

Now former Indianapolis Colts wideout Marvin Harrison, now a free agent, said he has no plans to retire and that he wants to play in the 2009 NFL football season, according to his agent, Tom Condon.

Condon said the problematic knee that has limited some of the speed and overall effectiveness we usually see from Marvin Harrison hasn’t been an issue either. Harrison, who is now 37, was released by the Indianapolis Colts after the 2008 season, in large part for salary-cap relief. Harrison, who didn’t agree to a restructured contract, was scheduled to count more than $13 million against the Colts’ 2009 cap.

”I played in 15 games last year and a playoff game, and I intend to play again this season,” Marvin Harrison said in an interview.

marvin_harrisonMarvin Harrison and Indianapolis parting ways in the offseason ended Harrison’s 13-year run with the Colts, with whom he established himself as one of the top receivers in NFL history and built up likely Hall of Fame credentials that include 1,102 receptions for 14,580 yards and 128 touchdowns.

Last season, Harrison had just 60 catches for 636 yards and five touchdowns, the lowest full single season totals of his career. That’s after he missed 11 games in 2007 because of a knee injury, catching just 20 passes and scoring one touchdown.

There hasn’t been much interest in Harrison at this point, but Condon said he expects his client to sign with a team soon before the season begins.

Harrison was selected by the Colts with the 19th selection in…

Can the Pittsburgh Steelers re-peat this time?

By: J.J. Jack

We’re asking because the last time they came into a season as the defending champions, they didn’t even made it to the playoffs.

That was after the Steelers won Super Bowl XL only to finish the following year barely .500. In the coming 2009 NFL football season, the Steelers are once again the defending champs, but can they finish better this time?

The NFL has not seen a repeat winner since New England in 2003 and 2004, proving that it is so hard to repeat as a champion in any sport. Sportsbooks know it too as oddsmakers have the Pittsburgh Steelers at (+1000) to win it again in 2010. Right now they are the 4th favorite and two of the three teams in front of them are from the AFC.

ben_roethlisbergerFor those of you betting on a Steeler re-peat, what do the Steelers have to do to win it all again? Read on.

For starters, the Steel Curtain must remain dominant. Arguably their biggest advantage over every other team in the NFL is their dominant defense. In 2008, they allowed the fewest points in the NFL (223), the fewest yards in the NFL (237.2), the fewest passing yards (156.9) and the second fewest rushing yards (80.2).

They were also tied for first in the fewest rushing yards per attempt (3.3), first in fewest passing yards per attempt allowed (5.4), second in quarterback sacks (51), second in QB rating allowed (63.4), tied for second in rushing touchdowns allowed (7) and tied for second in passing touchdowns allowed (12).

The Steelers defense was at the top of the NFL in almost…

USC Trojans host the San Jose State Spartans

By: Seth Edward O'Neal

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s that time of the year when we bet on the college gridiron again.

You read it, the 2009 NCAA college football season is here and we have a huge game that just might win you some cash on the first weekend of the 17-week college football marathon.

On the first weekend of the season, we have the USC Trojans. They have the San Jose Spartans to kick off their campaign. Can the Trojans find their way back to the Rose Bowl? Probably.

There’s no denying that USC has become one of the best programs in college football. So how in the hell can the San Jose State Spartans score a win on opening weekend at South Carolina? Well for starters, the Spartans do have a head coach who has his fair share of success against the Trojans.

usc_trojansThat’s right, San Jose State head coach Dick Tomey won his last two games against USC including five of 12 matchups while coaching Arizona from 1987-2000. Aside from his success against USC, his 181 career victories as a head coach are fourth most among active FBS coaches, and his 23 wins with San Jose are the most in a four-year span at the school since 1990-93.

The Spartans return 15 starters from last year’s team that finished 6-6 and lost its final three games. San Jose State, picked to finish sixth in the Western Athletic Conference, also brings back seven starters from a defense that…

Boise State Broncos vs. Oregon Ducks on Opening Night

By: J.J. Jack

Yep, the football season is OFFICIALLY here.

College football will once again get a head start from its pro counterpart as the brand new 2009 NCAA college football season begins this Thursday to officially kick off the football hysteria.

That’s right, football’s officially here and there’s nothing better to kick off the brand new year than having the unpredictable Boise State Broncos play on opening night against the Oregon Ducks.

You read it, the sixteenth-ranked Oregon Ducks begin the Kelly era Thursday night on the imposing blue turf of Bronco Stadium, where No.14 Boise State will look to win its 50th regular-season game in a row after stunning the Ducks a year ago. Oregon (10-3) became a contender in the Pac-10 and in the national scene in the 14 years Mike Bellotti roamed the sidelines, finishing as high as No.2 in 2001.

boise_state_broncosThe Ducks were expected to rebuild last season, in Bellotti’s last year at the helm before his predetermined transition to the role of athletic director but instead, the Ducks offense became one of the nation’s most dangerous offenses in Kelly’s second year as offensive coordinator.

Oregon finished seventh in the country in scoring offense (41.9 points per game) behind the running tandem of Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount, leading the nation’s second-ranked rushing offense with 280.1 yards per game. Blount, a junior college transfer who ran for 1,002 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, will be the star in the backfield with Johnson gone. Fortunately, the Ducks found out late last season that they have another star in Junior Jeremiah Masoli.

Masoli threw for 830 yards and six touchdowns, running for…

Okay, we all know Michael Vick will play for the Philadelphia Eagles, but what can Vick really do for ‘em?

By: Syndicate

If you’re still hoping that Vick will eventually land the starting QB job in Philly then you’re in for a huge disappointment this year.

Vick is returning to the National Football League this 2009 NFL football season after serving 18 months of a 23-month sentence for his role in running a dog fighting ring in Virginia. The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback was once the league’s highest-paid player and is looking to get his professional career back on track.

But can a guy like Michael Vick really help a Philadelphia Eagles team that already has two good quarterbacks? I don’t expect this guy to replace Donovan McNabb anytime soon and there are rumors that he isn’t even Philly’s no.2 guy with backup quarterback Kevin Kolb primed to land the job before the season starts.

michael_vickSo where does that leave Michael Vick if he can’t land the starting job AND the backup one? Well, the way for Vick to help the Eagles this season is to be able to do a lot more than just standing behind the center throwing footballs.

Vick can be a return man for one. That way, the Philadelphia Eagles can take advantage of Vick’s uncanny speed, provided that the speed the Eagles gladly paid for is still there.

Vick also has the option of lining up as a receiver, coming in motion , taking a pitch and heading to the edge. The Eagles can fake a handoff to him and watch the entire defense roll to his side to account for his speed. The Eagles can then go to the other side of the field for some favorable matchups that hopefully will be there.

As a receiver, Vick can be considered in shotgun formation…
