Manchester United in UEFA Champions League Quarters

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt was sweet revenge for Sir Alex Ferguson and his Man-U contingent.

The 2009 UEFA Champions League just got interesting after Manchester United qualified for the quarter finals, earning a 2-0 win over Inter Milan and giving Ferguson a win over his rival, Jose Mourinho.

You see, Jose Mourinho, now with Inter Milan, has been kicking Ferguson’s ass for years when Mourinho was then with Chelsea FC. It was ironic that Ferguson was in a face-off with his old nemesis again and fortunately for Fergie, Manchester United managed to pull through this time around.

Thanks to strong early starts Cristiano Ronaldofrom Man-U in each of the two halves of the fixture, Manchester United defeated Inter Milan, 2-0, to earn the trip to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Nemanja Vidic came up with a header for Man-U early in the first half before Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the deal with another header early in the second. Of course, Old Trafford was more than happy to see their club moving on in the tournament, especially since it’s a win over Mourinho.

”My team was fantastic but they were not lucky,” Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho said.

There were times in the fixture that Inter Milan looked…

Can Manchester United win Five Trophies this Season?

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgWhy are we asking?

Well, since the Manchester United Red Devils just won the Carling Cup, defeating Tottenham in a 4-1 penalty shootout after the teams played to a scoreless draw through regulation and extra time, we are.

You see, United is trying to win five trophies this season, something that has never been done. They won the Club World Cup title back in December and now with the Carling Cup title, they are nearly halfway to the goal. They have a comfortable lead in the 2009 English Premier League and Man-U winning the Premiership again is very possible indeed.

Aside from playing strong in the Premiership, the Red Devils are also in good shape in the 2009 UEFA Champions League, not to mention the fact that they are into the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo”We’re not going to get carried away with it,” Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. ”We’ll keep our feet on the ground. A deflected shot goes off someone’s backside at Fulham on Wednesday and you’re out of the cup. Today proved that. Without Ben Foster, we’d have lost that.”

United goalkeeper Ben Foster was brilliant for United in the victory, making big stops on Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent during the match. United also had chances to win before the shootout as Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez hit the post in injury time.

United is so deep that Ferguson chose to rest starting…

Freddy Deeb wins 2009 WPT Celebrity Invitational

Friday, March 6th, 2009

seth-edward-oneal.jpgJust pretend this story interests you.

The 2009 World Poker Tour Celebrity Invitational was a colorful event. The Commerce Casino was filled with hundreds of poker pros and celebrities all vying for a World Poker Tour title and a chance to donate to charity. In the end, it was WPT Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic winner Freddy Deeb who walked away with the championship and $100,000 in winnings.

It only took 73 hands for the final table to play out. Just seven hands into the game, Jose Tavares was sent home in 6th place with $5,000. The blinds were a staggering 30,000-60,000 with 10,000 ante and Tavares pushed all-in pre-flop with his A-Q with around a million in chips. Unfortunately for him, he was called by Nick Gonzales who held Pocket Rockets.

Freddy KruegerOttavio Tassone was the next to go when he lost against WSOP bracelet holder Scott ”BigRiskky” Clements. Tassone shoved all-in before the flop with K-J and was countered by a push by Clements with Pocket eights. The board didn’t help Tassone and he ended up in 5th place with $10,000.

Clements’ victory was short-lived as he was the next to bust out with $15,000. After Tom Hall raised to 200,000 pre-flop, Clements pushed all-in for 1.32 million. Hall called Clements with As-3s. Although Clements was ahead A-9, the flop gave Hall trips with 3-3-2.

The blinds were at 40,000-80,000 with 10,000 ante when…

Canada has a new Hero in Poker in Daniel Negreanu after he won the BC Open Poker Championships

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

The BC Open Poker Championships is one of Canada’s biggest poker events SINCE they really don’t have much going on up there.

And with Canada native Daniel Negreanu winning it all, the guy clearly is one of the most popular Canadian poker players we have in the game today and I won’t be surprised if his native country looks up to him now as its new hero at the poker tables.

Daniel Negreanu, who has been playing great poker by the way if you look at his record in recent events, won in the main event of the 2008 BC Open Poker Championships.

For his win, Negreanu further pads his bankroll with a cool $371,910 in prize money. Daniel NegreanuHe has also made his poker resume even more daunting. Canadians? This tournament was won by one of the most popular players in the world.

Unknown to a lot, Negreanu was originally from Toronto. Although he now lives in Las Vegas (the poker player’s home), Negreanu is tickled pink by his win. In an interview, Negreanu confessed that his victory was extra special since he was a Canadian himself. A little cheesy but it probably made him even more popular in Canada.

Who knows? It might even be true.

Despite the sentimental talk, Negreanu was a killer at the poker table. He had to…

Henry Orenstein, on the other hand, is known for both his…

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

And finally, when all of these is done and over with, we can go back writing all the football stuff that we want.

But for now, we’re going to talk about the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic and in case you haven’t heard, post positions and morning-line odds have been set for the 25th running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.

Curlin was made the early 7-5 favorite Tuesday in a field of 12 for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Without retired Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown in the field, Raven’s Pass, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in his last start, was made the 6-1 second choice.

2008 Breeders' Cup ClassicLike Curlin, Raven’s Pass will be competing in a synthetic surface for the first time.

Go Between, the Pacific Classic winner, was the third choice at 8-1. Undefeated Casino Drive of Japan, Todd Pletcher-trained Fairbanks, Duke of Marmalade and Henrythenavigator, were all listed with 10-1 odds.

”We’ve always wanted to face a good field and this is a great field,” Barbara Banke, wife of Curlin’s owner Jess Jackson, said. ”We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Zenyatta, because of an 8-0 record, made her the 3-5 early favorite. Her owner…

Can Curlin win the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

seth-edward-oneal.jpgIt’s this Saturday already. How about that huh? It seems nobody seems to care with football here.

STILL, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place at the Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is one of the biggest betting events in North America and is especially interesting to horse racing fans across the globe for the fact that the best European horses come out to compete against the best American horses.

Curlin was made the early 7-5 favorite in a field of 12 for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Curlin would likely earn Horse of the Year honors for the second consecutive year if he defends his title Saturday at Santa Anita in his first race on a synthetic track.

”The synthetic is a huge question. CurlinA higher percentage of horses train better over it than run well over it,” trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Curlin will break from the No.9 post.

Last year, Curlin won the Classic by 4 ½ lengths on a sloppy track in New Jersey’s Monmouth Park. He’s expected to run in ideal conditions Saturday, with the forecast calling for sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s.

There are many changes to the 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships with the number of races expanded to 14, held over two days with total purses of $25.5 million up for grabs.

Friday will be Ladies Day with five races for the distaff divisions…

Are you ready for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic? (Obviously, Big Brown won’t be… Hee… Hee…)

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

We’re not. In case you were wondering.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup world thoroughbred championships is just around the corner and this year brings a lot of changes to the annual event. They now have expanded to a total of 14 races spread over two days of racing with $25.5 million in purse money on the line.

Race day starts on Friday Oct.24, 2008 that features ”Ladies Day” with five races for the distaff divisions, bannered by the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, formerly the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, worth $2 million.

The Breeders’ Cup championships resumes Curlinthe next day that will have nine races ranging from the 6 furlong Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) to the new 1 ½ mile Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

The feature race on Saturday will still be the $5 million 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

One thoroughbred that will be the center of attraction in this year’s coveted event is Curlin. Horse of the Year Curlin is scheduled to work five-eighths of a mile between races on Monday on Santa Anita Park’s synthetic Pro-Ride surface.

And with Big Brown out, probably for the rest of the horse’s career in horse racing, Curlin should now be the ultimate favorite to…

English Football Giants Liverpool and Chelsea are lording over the 2008 English Premier League

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Of course, it’s still a little early to determine who’ll win the big one but still…

The Premiership has been dominated by Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in recent seasons. Liverpool wants to join those three teams and so far in the 2008 English Premier League, they have.

Liverpool is at the top of the mountain at this point and star Dirk Kuyt believes his team can stay there. ”Every three games we have a big game. We had Everton and PSV last week, and our target is just to win every game and try to be there by the end of the season.”

”But it was vital to Steven Gerrardkeep pace with Chelsea before the internationals. We can leave with a good feeling.”

”We’ve already had one international break and we came back in our first game after it and beat Manchester United, so I wouldn’t say it comes at a bad time. Anyway, we don’t need any excuses. We’ll just keep on going and see how we do against Wigan in our next game.”

One problem for Liverpool is that they will be without defender Martin Skrtel for months after he suffered damage to his posterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.

”Martin underwent a scan this morning which showed…”
